Just bought new computer with windows 8. I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials for the past couple of years on my old XP computer and it's been wonderful anti virus program. I also run Malwarebytes for safety. Windows 8 has "Windows Defender" included, but I can't find out if that is the equivalent of Securitiy Essentials. Is it the same? Is it anti-virus? Do I now have to purchase an anti-virus program for Windows 8? Security Essentials is free download for other Windows operating systems, and I like it a lot. So, am I stuck having to have another anti virus program on my new computer? No clear answers anywhere. By the way, I really HATE Windows 8. What a non-intuitive operating system. View this thread

Windows Update no longer works on my Toshiba laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The error that is given is as follows "WindowsUpdate_8024800A" "WindowsUpdate_dt000". It is my belief that this problem was generated after updating to a new version of Norton Internet Security, since this is, I believe, the only piece of software that I have changed since the last successful use of Windows Update. However, other programs may have been updated automatically, such as browsers, or various applications such as java,. I have used System Restore to launch what i thought was a version of the system predating the Norton change, but this did not solve the problem. Any suggestions for how to resolve? I've recently upgraded to a ~2.7 TB OS boot disk, meaning it's formatted to use GPT and I rely on EFI. I've spent two weeks trying to diagnose why, after successful installations, Windows 7 and Windows 8 would both break themselves on my machine after some (previously anonymous) sequence of updates. Startup Repair (or its Windows 8 equivalent) ends up launching every time, fails to find/fix any faults, and I'm forced to reboot in vain. With Windows 7 Enterprise, x64, I've finally narrowed the source of the problem to KB2506014. I understand that it patches the bootloader to fix a security vulnerability. Now I can see that it's reported as a fault by others, too, and that the principal workaround is to simply avoid installing it. Is there a fix for this yet, or is there some deeper root cause? I downloaded a free Webster's Dictionary and along with it I got an "Inbox.com" tab at the top of my Chrome browser which I can't remove. I think it would be called a toolbar but may be some kind of extension. I just can't figure it out. First I uninstalled the dictionary but the tab remained on the browser. I tried the Chrome Help and a lot of other suggestions from others, but nothing worked. Finally I uninstalled the Chrome browser three different times and reinstalled it, and it still comes up on the tab. When I click on the tab, I can type in a word for a definition and I will get it, which I think is really weird since I uninstalled Webster's. I didn't like the dictionary anyway but now I'm stuck with a part I can't remove.Can anyone help me since I would really like to start using the Google Chrome again. wannierob View this thread

I have a HP sleekbook with windows 8 and it is driving me nuts. I ran out of time on the free Norton trial. I deleted it and I think uninstalled it too. I however cannot turn Windows Defender on. Technology frustrates me and I need help...any suggestions??? View this thread

HP Pavilion dv6 64 Bit running Windows 7 Premium has been compromised because of peer2peer sharing...my own damn fault. Service Packs will not load correctly, Microsoft Security Essentials is running but is false never showing malware. In safe mode there was a command with essentials that said -hide run key. There are no files in System Folder. Lots of files in System 32 but extensions are all over the place: .dll, .man etc. Whenever I try to make changes cmd32 prompt is triggered and kills the effort. Changes have been made to the Registry. There are 2 or 3 copies of almost every Windows file on the machine. Some are booby trapped or are redirects. I did a clean Restore with factory disks 3 times now, twice paying for computer tech professionals only to have it come back. The network has also compromised my Iphone 4S with a bootstrap program that even redirects the APP Store. I have done factory resets on IPhone, changed the home router and still have a persistent problem. This issue has also compromised one other Machine running Windows Vista and another Machine running Windows 7. I want to restore machine to a point without the registry changes. I want to get rid of all peer2peer networking files, logs, and all programs that do not belong. With that I hope to get a clean install of Itunes to clean the IPhone and restore. I deal with tons of digital video and music through my job so the machine was ripe for the pickings as well as downloading videos through an app on the iphone. There were several downloaded programs paid for that seem to have had an impact on the issue: WINCALENDAR Sapro Systems, Internet Download Manager, Speed Bits Accelerator, and a Pocket Remote Desktop with the IPHONE as well as using apps from IOS to download to the IPHONE. I also used a program to create a proxy and VPN to hide the IP address which may have caused some issues. A hidden VPN loads on my IPHONE (see it through system log) but I do not know what program it is loading through. I have found hidden peer2peer programs within actual programs on the machine: Radeon graphic program. Please assist in teaching me how to fix Windows 7 on this machine and remove any and all peer2peer programs, logs, and devives as well as possible malware. I also need to eliminate the changes to my registry. I would also be interested in receiving advice on better ways to secure my devices amd browser and ideas on where I would be able to download safe programs from the internet as even the ones I paid for are giving me headaches. Thank You. I also forgot to mention the Drivers on the machine are a mess. Most drivers are actually listed as System32/drivers/HTTP or System32/Drivers/AFD.sys with many of them found in Device Manager under Hidden Devices. View this thread

somehow a piece of malicious adware for "tuneup utilities' has insinuated it's way onto my system. I have tried to delete it via 'uninstall without luck. Initially it was a popup which suggested that I had a certain period to sign up for the service. It displayed a supposed count of errors that it had located & asked me to run the program/ purchase. day after day I have not been able to get rid of it even though the supposed 'trial period' is over. I have plenty of previous windows updates installed but now new ones won't install. I get no error code. Window message says updates are successfully installed but when I restart computer, the updates remain. I shut off Norton firewall-does not help. Could Malwarebytes or Superspyware be the problem? Hello, I have an old desktop running XP Home edition. Having been away from the machine for twelve months, I powered up the machine with no problems. I updated my browser, anti-virus and a few other pieces of software. Throughout the day, Windows updates to the system were downloaded. I opted to install them which it said it had done with no problems. I turned of the machine for the night normaly with no problem.The next day I tried to boot up the system. It said that Windows had ended abnormally, but suggested I load Windows normally. I tried, the Windows splash screen came up, but that was all. It then went back the start as though I had just powered on the machine. It keeps going round this loop. I have tried opting for Safe mode in all its flavours, but it continues in the same loop.I have managed to boot a Puppy Linux system on the machine from a CD. There is a problem accessing the hard drive, I can only access it read-only.I have the original Home edition CD. Is a repair possible? If so how? My frien got an Asus Vivotab Sart two or three months ago and was able to install an app that runs fine. For that very resin I bought the same tablet and tried ti install the same app but it will notrun. She also tried to reinstall hers in attempt to walk me through it but it will not install for her now. It does what the title say. After installing KB2811660 my front USB2.0 ports doesn't work and only way to resolve it, is to do a system restore to an earlier point. I'm running ASUS P8Z77-V with i5 in Xigmatek Midgard II computer case. i can install updates for w 7 ultimate, different computer with firewalls active, but not w 7 for W 7 Pro. I disabled firewalls, no help. this installation was on top of Vista. I get error code 80070539 and app;ys to security updates and Win Defender updates. This has happened before, I don't remember how I fixed it. Sys. restore does not help.
