  1. .. I'm not sure. After feeding in the information about my system into the Nvidia website, it came up with this: GeForce Driver Release 181 WHQLVersion:181.22Release Date:January 22, 2009Operating System:Windows Vista 64-bitLanguage:U.S. EnglishFile Size:95.6 MB This is a WHQL-certified driver for GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9, and 200-series desktop GPUs. This is the one i downloaded. I'm getting a replacement free today, will post here once installed with results.
  2. sorry sorry, i just wasn't sure whether this was a hardware issue or a software issue. I really need some help pleeaassseee someone. I'm not sure how much longer i can bare this.
  3. graphics driver I've been having the same problem for months now but haven't had the time to deal with it until now. I've built a new pc, and with it i installed a nVidia GeForce 9800GT. Everything is fine without the graphics drivers installed, but whenever i do (even the latest version from the nVidia website) i get a completly blank screen on startup, just after the windows loading menu. Already i've gone into safe mode hundreds of time and unstalled the driver and reinstalled it. i've tryed every tackt but every time when i think i've cracked it, i just get a blank screen instead of the friendly windows vista orb. What should i do? Is there anything i can do software based before i send it back?? thanks,
  4. no luck.. I can't believe it. After all this, after waiting an hour for the latest driver to download off the internet, and then installing it, i get all the problems i've been having over the last couple of months again. The welcome screen just won't load. Is there anything i can do now before simply sending the *******ing thing back to the factory? It was really expensive.
  5. thanks thanks, will give that a try and will post here again once completed with results.
  6. For a while now i have been having problems with this. When i load the pc without the graphics card driver, it works fine (but looks rubbish) When i load the driver from cd and then restart, windows doesn't load. I went into safe mode and rolled back the driver. This removed it. I tried again, but this time i asked windows to search for a driver, it found one and installed it. When i switch on, windows loads and i get the welcome screen. I type in my passwork, and my desktop loads, but then completly freezes after less than a second. I have been having this problem for a long time now. Is it because the graphics card just doesn't work? Do none of the drivers i install work? Is there a bug, is the thing just broken. It is very new, this is a home built pc and has had next to no use because this problem has been preventing me from doing anything on it. Thanks,
  7. Solved!!! Issue solved. It turns out that they both had identical jumper settings.
  8. Dear All, I've recently built a new pc. I have 2 dvd rom drives. They are connected to the mother board with one cable. they both have power, they both open and close. They both show up in device manager. In "computer" in vista, only one shows up. when i right click on it and press eject, both drives open together. They are both the same model and brand. How do i tell the computer there are two of them? thanks, jamesbrown
  9. my problem is i can't switch it on, it's insternal, and Fn + F2 doesn't work. Neither the switch on the side. I will look for drivers and see what i can find because i need software to switch the thing on in the first place.
  10. I've tryed those, still won't come on. The wireless is working fine though. I'll have a look on the DELL website.
  11. Hi, There is no bluetooth option to click on in all programs. I've checked the BIOS and it saids that bluetooth in enabled. Any more ideas? You were defornatly right about getting that little icon on the botton right, but i just need to get it. Is there anything i can download as far as programs/drivers that can solve this? I just physically have the software to switch it on.....Does dell have something? Thanks.
  12. Dear All, I have recently had to replace the hardrive on my DELL inspiron 1720. Everything is fine, vista is back on and i've got all my data back on from backup. One problem, i need to reinstall the driver for my bluetooth device, i put the driver CD in, and ask it to install the driver. A box comes up, asking me to switch on my bluetooth device so it can be identified....I can't do it. The button on the side of the laptop is on, but the Bluetooth is not on. The way i see it, it isn't broken, i just don't know how to switch it on in the computer. There needs to be something i can click on the activate it again because when the button on the side of the laptop is on, you get the option to switch bluetooth off even though the button is on, that is what i did before i started having problems with the hardrive. Any tips? Device manage? control pannel? What should i do? I just need a way of activating bluetooth, so windows can install drivers and software for it, but because there are no drivers and software for it, i can't activate it.
  13. Dear All, It's been a long and painful journey but i reckon i've got all my previous issues under control. I've had to do a system restore several times, because i get frequent crashes after installing updates from windows. Would it be a good idea just to get service pack 1 from windows web site? Also what FREE virus protection would anyone recomend. Another thing, i have 2 hardrives, 1 of them has the operating system on, the other is just for data: i can't use the second one because windows needs to iniciate it or something, when i click on it, it gives me the option to format it, This takes ages, and because i don't have much time, i want to know whether it's working or not. I have canceled every attempt because i thought there was something wrong. This HD is 1TB big, so would that mean that it would take a long time? Thanks :)
  14. also Hi There, Also, make sure you are really careful about static. Shocks can happen without you even realising it, and before you know it, you're components are fried. I use an antistatic wrist band, really really cheep and worth it.
  15. so far Hi Everybody, Thankyou for all suggestions so far. Vista is resolved, and it's all down to the updates. I did a system restore and now it doesn't crash.....But my disk drives won't show up so i can't install any of my drivers. Any advice? thanks
  16. ooops i cannot provide a screen shot because usb devices don't work in safe mode (i'm using my laptop to write this) and as i said before, the pc is unsable because it completly freezes shortly after log on (my desktop is the computer that is having the problems). I believe that my first problem is software related, because the pc has been behaving beautifully before i installed about 40 updates from windows. Which of these updates do you think is causing this? Is it one of my drives that is the problem because as you probably know, safe mode means that most drivers arn't being used, and if the computer isn't crashing in safe mode then one of my drivers is the culprit? yes? no? maybe? thanks. Please rimember, (this goes for anyone who is willing to help) i build this desktop myself, and therefore i'm perfectly happy to dive inside it if anyone comes up with a good sugestion. This also means that the problem could be hardware related, but because of the evidence above i think that it is software or driver issues that is causing the system to freeze shortly after log on.
  17. Dear All, some time ago (before i went on holiday) i posted this very same question and i didn't have much luck after trying out what was suggested by so many people. Quite a few people said that it could be a problem with the RAM, well i run 2X 2GB DDR2 sticks of RAM, and they are seated really nicely. Despite this, i still get a complete system freeze just after i log on. I can't work out why, it could be anything. I recently re-intalled windows, and it was fine for a bit. i then installed AVG, and then went on holiday. i come back, switch on, log on.....complete freeze. I had just finnished building this machine before i went on holiday. Is it vista? or is it hardware? Everything freezes. Even the hd light. It's almost the system has been stopped in it's tracks by something. It was fine before i installed AVG.... could that be the problem? Please please please help. I'm really sad that this is happening because all the parts for this machine were a present from someone, and now the god dam thing won't work. Many thanks, UPDATE::::::: Started system in safe mode. No crashes in safe mode. Doing a scan using AVG. still waiting for results. One other thing, and this is second priority to my main problem. I have two disk drives, but only one of them shows up in "Computer" when i right click on the one that is there, and click eject, it opens both!!!????!?!?!?! when i go to device manager, it displays only one, and still is displaying only one now even though i've asked it to look for recent hardware changes. The reason why it thinks there is only one is because when i was setting the system up i only had one connected because i made my life alot more easier when installing software in the early stages, i have now connected the other one, but it won't show up.
  18. the story so far thanks about the heatsink help. I did realise the other day that i was following the arrows and not the instructions!! I now can no longer get windows to load (i get the windows loading screen but then no lovely shiny vista orb just horrible horrible blackness) I have tryed loading from settings that previously worked, i've done system restore......all to no effect. I am now going back to scratch and reintstalling windows. I do hope that whatever is happening now won't happen again, i just wish i new the cause!!! could be anything, but even on the rare occaisions when i could get vista to work it would freeze totally after a few seconds. I've formatted my drives and i'm reinstalling now. Any tips would be greatly apreciated :) thankyou to all who posted here, anymore would be greatly welcomed! :)
  19. ram I will try the RAM method. When i installed them i was very careful to provide equil pressure to the sticks as i installed them. I had no problems installing them. They are nicely seated at present but i will take them out and tinker. I've just done a system restore point, which will take the system back to before i installed just over 40 updates from windows (new system so loads of updates) I will re-instal all the important ones from windows, and not install anything i might not need. Many thanks, p.s. System restore is still happening btw. I will have to wait for the results!
  20. sure many thanks to all who have posted during their christmas. I will try all the anti-malware methods above. To those who wanted to know the spec of my new system, here it is: Intel Core2 Quad prossesor, Gigabyte ATX Intel Socket 775 8-Channel Audio ATX Motherboard, Seagate HDD 1TB hardrive, OEM SATA 500GB hardrive, Dual DDR2 4GB RAM kit, 700w X-power powersupply, ICUTE JET ATX case, 2X -SAMSUNG internal DVDRW burner, Windows vista ultimate, 2X 19inch TFT monitors, wirless desktop - keyboard mouse etc. Nvidia 9800GT 1GB graphics card, As you can see.....it's a very powerful and expensive system. All the parts were sort of a christmas present so i'm really intent on getting this thing working. I have my doupts about malware because it hasn't been in use long enough, but you never know what could have got on there in the short amount of time it had without AVG. I'm also worried about the CPU heatsink, i have had it pop off from time to time, luckily when the pc wasn't running. All help would be much apreciated! Merry christmas to you all!
  21. I've just built a new PC. Had many drama's along the way but that's another story. Anyway i eventually manage to install windows vista on this lovely new machine. And now whenever i try to do something it just crashes. Not just not responding it's the kind of crash that means i can't even move the mouse. The only thing to do is re-boot, and sometimes windows refuses to boot so i have to go into safe mode then sit around a bit and then try again. I can't install software without is crashing and i can't formate my new hardrives that i've installed. Is this problem virus or software related? I have avg installed which i got on the system before the problems started occuring. I have a genuin version of windows vista which i bought, but it didn't come in a fancy windows vista case it just came in some rubbishy cardboard thingy. The big question is, is the problem hardware, or software related? Frequent crashes....--can't move the mouse or type! What a great christmas present! Please help, thankyou!
  22. cheers Yep. that was the problem. It didn't tell me to do that in the manual that i was using to help me build. Did exactly what you told me and it now works fine! Thankyou!
  23. I've just finnished buiding a new SUPER pc. It's got a Gigabyte motherboard, a 1TB hardrive, and a 500GB hardrive. It's got a Geforce 9800GT graphics card. Everything assembled blah blah blah. Plug it in, switch it on. All fans running nicely, but nothing on screen....and yet the screen was plugged into power and the back of the pc. My motherboard has two different places that the graphics card could go, should i try the other? Also the little sound bleeper that makes the BIOS beep comes separatly and you have to put it in yourself and i don't know where. Please tell me how to fix the graphics first, all i need is to get to the BIOS and then take things from there, but for now i can't do anything. If i had the bleeper installed i could listen to bleeps and try to work out the problem from there but i can't coz the bleeper isn't in. Pleeeeeaaaassseeee help on this.
  24. safemode no i don't think so, but i did go on holiday after the rebuild, so i only used it once or twice before leaving it a while, and when i got back it just wouldn't load the welcome screen, just black black black. I will try safe mode and if that doesn't work, i will reset the bios, and if that doesn't work then i will have to buy a IDE/SATA to USB 2.0 and get all my data off the hard drive, and then reinstall windows. The other option would be to buy a new hardrive (i need a new one anyway and it wasn't upgraded in the rebuild) and set that as primary (which i don't know how to do) and then install windows on it., then have my old hard drive plugged in as secondary and just copy the data across. UPDATE::::::::: i tryed safemode and that didn't even load so i loaded system from last settings that worked, that didn't work so i removed all USBs plugged in, this included keyboard, mouse and speakers. System then said it needed to check disks for consistancy, let it do that, said it found some error file, removed it, recovered orphaned file and rebooted. Now everything is absolutly fine!!!!! I'm so happy because i haven't got round to fixing this problem before nearly half a year!!!! It's like saying hi to an old friend :)
