I talk to Cortana every day — at home, work and on-the-go — to get information about my day, to set reminders so I don’t forget things, and to answer my questions. But I don’t just use one digital assistant. I also frequently talk to Alexa to listen to audio books or to add things to my shopping list. Because people use and interact with all kinds of products, we’re very excited to announce a first-of-its-kind collaboration with Amazon between Cortana and Alexa that will offer more choice, value and access to both intelligent personal assistants. Available later this year, this collaboration will allow you to access Alexa via Cortana on Windows 10 PCs, followed by Android and iOS in the future. Conversely, you’ll be able to access Cortana on Alexa-enabled devices like the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Show. As our CEO, Satya Nadella, said in today’s Amazon press release, the collaboration between Microsoft and Amazon reflects our belief that when people and technology work together, everybody wins: “Ensuring Cortana is available for our customers everywhere and across any device is a key priority for us. Bringing Cortana’s knowledge, Office 365 integration, commitments and reminders to Alexa is a great step toward that goal.” By bringing Cortana to Alexa and Alexa to Cortana, I’m excited that we’re adding more value and choice for consumers and developers alike. Cortana users will be able to have Alexa shop on Amazon.com and manage their Amazon orders and access many of Alexa’s third-party skills by asking Cortana to open Alexa, just as Alexa users will have access to Cortana’s world knowledge and helpful productivity features such as calendar management, day at a glance and location-based reminders simply by asking Alexa to open Cortana. Alexa as a guest on Cortana With Alexa as a guest on Cortana, Cortana users will now have another way of making their lives easier with a great shopping experience. Say you are at work, and you receive a text from your partner saying, “We’re running low on diapers.” In the future, on your Windows 10 PC, iPhone or Android phone, you could simply say, “Hey Cortana, open Alexa,” and ask Alexa to order diapers using your preferred payment method for your Amazon account. Cortana as a guest on Alexa With Cortana as a guest on Alexa, Alexa users will have access to some of Cortana’s most useful productivity capabilities that help people stay organized and on top of what’s important to them. What if you’re making breakfast in the morning and need to know if you have enough time to drop off the dry-cleaning before work? On your Alexa device, you can say, “Alexa, open Cortana,” and ask when your first meeting is. If you won’t have enough time, simply ask Alexa to open Cortana again and set a reminder for the end of your workday to drop off the clothes. I know this is going to make my life a little bit easier. We look forward to having Alexa on Cortana-enabled devices and Cortana on Alexa-enabled devices later this year. Across the country, we watched as Hurricane Harvey hit Texas with devastating force last Friday night. As the crisis continues to unfold, our thoughts are with the millions of people in Houston and throughout the Gulf Coast who are impacted by this disaster, which has been described as unprecedented in scale and scope. Since the weekend we’ve been in close contact with nonprofit partners and organizations leading the relief efforts in Texas to understand the specific needs they have. Based on their feedback, we have taken some immediate steps. We are contributing $2.5 million in cash, technology and services to support relief efforts and to help nonprofit and public-sector organizations as they assist the community in recovery. This includes an initial cash donation to the American Red Cross for its most pressing needs. We have also harnessed the generosity of our employees in the U.S. through our employee giving program. Every dollar contributed by our employees to relief organizations working in the area will be matched dollar for dollar by Microsoft. To date, this effort has already raised $100,000 for organizations including the American Red Cross and Team Rubicon. As our employees continue to donate in the days and weeks ahead, we’ll continue to scale the impact of their giving by matching these donations. To raise awareness and make it easier for people across the country to make donations toward relief and recovery efforts, we are using our company websites and social media channels —which together reach millions of people — to highlight the need and opportunity to help through the American Red Cross. Beyond these immediate steps, our long-term goal is to help the communities across the region to recover and residents to rebuild their lives. As in other disasters, we will focus on working closely with the nonprofits and government agencies that play such a vital role in supporting the community. This model of providing immediate aid, followed by support for long-term recovery, is one we’ve deployed in response to 300+ disasters over the last 30 years. We’re committed to continuing to play our part this week, and in the months and years ahead. We are standing by and ready to do more. Hello Windows Insiders! Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16278 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring only (not Skip Ahead). As we mentioned in last week, we are now at the point of the development cycle for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update where our focus is now on stabilization for release to the world. This means that we intend to release new builds to Insiders more quickly and that these builds will include mostly bug fixes. You’ll notice that this build continues to include a bunch of good bug fixes Insiders will enjoy. General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC We fixed an issue where upgrading to recent flights would fail if you had a speech for a secondary language installed. We fixed an issue where printing from 32-bit apps running on 64-bit versions of the OS was broken when using v3 print drivers on recent builds. The ability to take HDR screenshots on your PC via the Xbox app has been removed starting with this build. We plan to re-introduce this feature again in the future. We fixed an issue resulting in drag and drop onto websites intermittently not working in Microsoft Edge. We fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge would crash after choosing to pin certain websites to Start. We fixed an issue where a tab in Microsoft Edge could get in a state where it displayed a tab preview thumbnail even though your mouse wasn’t hovering over the tab. We fixed an issue in Microsoft Edge for certain websites where after watching an embedded video full screen then using Esc to return to the page would result in the video controller no longer being visible. We fixed an issue in Microsoft Edge where pasting an image to Imgur.com from your clipboard wouldn’t work. We fixed an issue where the Emoji Panel’s tooltips could become mixed up. We fixed an issue from recent flights resulting in precision touchpads potentially dropping gestures after coming out of sleep. We fixed an issue where the battery flyout might incorrectly show “PC not charging” while the device was changing in recent builds. We fixed an issue where fonts using shortcuts would become unusable and disappear from the Fonts folder. We fixed an issue resulting in multiple apps crashing in the previous flight if you tried to log into the app using Facebook. We fixed and issue where Delivery Optimization Group Policy / MDM policy for DOMinFileSizeToCache was ignored and the service defaults were used instead. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/c8886501085cb1f4a2ccc01331cb042a.jpg We are on a mission to help empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more, and one of the ways we are doing that is through the power of mixed reality. Since January 21, 2015, when we announced Microsoft HoloLens, we have seen developers, partners, and customers innovate in ways we have never seen before. As a creator, it is inspiring to see the world embrace mixed reality; to see organizations and developers stretch the boundaries of what we can do with technology. Together we have created the most vibrant mixed reality community out there and it has been phenomenal to share in this journey with our community. A little over ten months ago our mixed reality journey took a leap forward when we announced that the world’s largest PC makers were working with us to democratize virtual reality this holiday with Windows Mixed Reality headsets. This week at IFA we will be sharing more details on Windows Mixed Reality headsets and I encourage everyone to tune into the news that will be coming out of Berlin. As we get ready for a big week with our partners, I would like to share with you some exciting details about our product, including the first wave of content experiences you can immerse yourself in this holiday. Windows Mixed Reality: easy setup, affordable gear, a range of hardware choices, and immersive experiences Easy setup Existing high-end VR headsets with external cameras are cumbersome to set up. For more people to experience VR one of the barriers that needed to be removed was the need for external markers. That is why the Windows Mixed Reality headsets coming this holiday will be the first to deliver VR experiences with built-in sensors to track your physical position without requiring you to purchase and install external sensors in your room. You don’t need to spend hours to set up a single room in your house with a large play space, just plug and play. This also means these experiences are portable – whether you are traveling for work or visiting friends and family, just pack your PC and headset and you can share the magic of mixed reality. Affordable gear A variety of Windows Mixed Reality headsets and motion controllers will be available this holiday from HP, Lenovo, Dell, and Acer. Headset and motion controller bundles will start as low as $399 and will be compatible with exciting and new PC models starting at $499. Along with our partners, we are committed to making mixed reality affordable. Range of hardware choices When it comes to deciding which hardware is right for you, we know that our customers value choice in brand, industrial design, and features. That is why we created Windows Mixed Reality as a platform for you to enjoy experiences across multiple devices that meet your mobility and performance needs. We have talked a lot about the headsets and motion controllers, now let’s talk about PCs that will be compatible with Windows Mixed Reality. This holiday, customers can choose the PC that’s right for them – Windows Mixed Reality PCs and Windows Mixed Reality Ultra PCs. Here is some context on what makes the two experiences different: Windows Mixed Reality PCs: will consist of desktops and laptops with integrated graphics. When plugged into these devices, our immersive headsets will run at 60 frames per second. Windows Mixed Reality Ultra PCs: will consist of desktops and laptops with discrete graphics. When plugged into these devices, our immersive headsets will run at 90 frames per second. Both configurations will support today’s immersive video and gaming experiences such as traveling to a new country, exploring space, swimming with dolphins, or shooting zombies. Use your Windows Mixed Reality motion controllers to enjoy a world of discovery and imagination this holiday. Immersive experiences We are working with an incredible set of partners to bring the most immersive experiences to the Windows Store. First, we are excited to announce the first wave of content partners coming to Windows Mixed Reality. Second, it’s my pleasure to let you know that we are working with 343 Industries to bring future Halo experiences into mixed reality. We are not providing specifics right now, but it is going to be a lot of fun to work with them. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/67efe8d437dc22006f36cca53d4a4309.jpg In addition, I am thrilled to announce that Steam content will also run on Windows Mixed Reality headsets. Virtual reality enthusiasts know that Steam is a great place to enjoy cutting edge immersive experiences. We can’t wait to bring their content to you. Here is a sneak peek into what you can expect this holiday. We are just getting started and we are honored to work with world class creators and developers. Mixed Reality is the future, and we want everyone on the journey with us. For customers, we are creating the best, most affordable mixed reality headsets and bringing you immersive experiences that you will love. For developers, we are making it easy to create great content spanning from simple augmented reality to virtual reality and of course holograms. There is more in store for this holiday and I look forward to sharing more details with you in the coming weeks! In the meantime, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me on Twitter, and please continue to share your feedback with us. Hello Windows Insiders! Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16275 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring only (not Skip Ahead). Note that if you joined Skip Ahead and leave it to take this build, you will be unable to re-join Skip Ahead. As we mentioned in the blog post for our flight on Wednesday, we are now at the point of the development cycle for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update where our focus is now on stabilization for release to the world. This means that we intend to release new builds to Insiders more quickly and that these builds will include mostly bug fixes. You’ll notice that this build includes a bunch of good bug fixes Insiders will enjoy. NOTE: Some of the x64 versions of Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise for this build in languages such as EN-GB, FR-FR, DE-DE, RU-RU, PT-BR and several others. We’re working to have these published shortly. We are also releasing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 15245 to Insiders in the Fast ring. Also – join us on Tuesday August 29th at 10am Pacific for our Engineering Systems webcast on our Mixer channel! General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC We fixed an issue resulting in Asphalt 8 not accepting input in recent flights. We fixed an issue from recent flights where when Slideshow was enabled resuming from sleep a second time might place the Lock screen in a state where it couldn’t be dismissed without pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del. We fixed an issue that caused minimized per-monitor DPI aware windows to miss DPI changes and end up with a mix of DPI scaling upon restoring. We fixed an issue in XAML resulting in text animations appearing slightly blurry in the last flight until the animation had stopped (for example, when loading the main page of Settings). We fixed an issue resulting in progress wheels on certain websites in Microsoft Edge unexpectedly moving out of place during their rotation. We fixed an issue resulting in an unexpected change in mouse sensitivity in the last flight for PCs using non-default display scaling. We fixed an issue resulting in the taskbar being unexpectedly thick if you booted up the PC while plugged in to an external monitor with a different DPI. General changes, improvements, and fixes for Mobile This build also includes all the improvements from KB4034674. We fixed an issue where the MTP service would sometimes crash when you disconnected your phone while a file transfer is in progress. We fixed a spin loop that was occasionally triggered by deleting a VPN profile. We fixed an issue where apps which call into the firewall (such as Microsoft Edge) have the potential of becoming deadlocked and the app hangs until you reboot your phone. We fixed an issue in the routing engine used by apps like Maps where the initial direction was always set to North which could result in unnecessary route segments. We fixed an issue where Silverlight apps that use GPS would either not start or crash. We fixed an issue where a non-default Messaging app (e.g. Skype) would crash with an Access Denied error when changing Download messages settings. We fixed an issue where the new Privacy Consent popup would block loading of apps which used the activity detection and pedometer sensors. We fixed an issue where turning on/off Reset Protection could cause the phone to reboot. This week was awash in news out of gamescom 2017, a European trade fair for digital gaming culture that took place in Cologne, Germany. If your head is spinning from all the announcements, take a deep breath and devote the next three minutes to watching this video, with everything you need to know out of Xbox, including pre-orders of the Xbox One X and the limited-edition Project Scorpio, the Xbox One S Minecraft limited-edition bundle, and news on games such as PlayerUnknown’s “Battlegrounds,” “State of Decay 2,” “Forza Motorsport 7,” “ReCore Definitive Edition,” “Assassin’s Creed Origins,” “Middle-earth: Shadow of War,” Xbox Backward Compatibility and more. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/24d5770bf94c195095bdf0a23c0d86f3.jpg Gamescom wasn’t the only big event this week. At the Hot Chips 2017 conference, a cross-Microsoft team unveiled a new deep-learning acceleration platform, codenamed Project Brainwave, that was designed for real-time artificial intelligence. That means the system processes requests as fast as it receives them, with ultra-low latency, according to Doug Burger, a distinguished engineer at Microsoft. “Project Brainwave achieves a major leap forward in both performance and flexibility for cloud-based serving of deep learning models,” Burger wrote. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/45600988a8d531000c7ee8354429c791.jpg Speaking of artificial intelligence, it dominated this year’s Microsoft Hackathon last month, with a winning project that’s too hot to talk about. The Hackathon started in 2014 as an experiment to engage employees, and it’s now the world’s biggest private hackathon with more than 18,000 participants who showcase bold new ideas that influence company products and sometimes lead to entirely new services. This year’s winning team put together a project that’s “a compelling and practical use of artificial intelligence that we think our customers will love,” said Jeff Ramos, who leads the Microsoft Garage, the team that runs the Hackathon. “It’s so compelling that we’ve decided to be discreet in the amount of details we want to share.” Taken as a whole, this year’s group of hackers showed how quickly AI is becoming the fabric of how a new generation of technology services is delivered, with projects submitted for everything from self-driving wheelchairs to the prediction of traffic signal times. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/0f77e4448192aaf869ef857337957fe6.jpg It was also a big week for inclusivity at Microsoft. In conjunction with the US Business Leadership Network conference, which focuses on inclusive hiring, Microsoft employees shared personal stories showing the benefits of having a diverse population. Software engineer Swetha Machanavajhala, who was born with profound hearing loss, shared how she uses data and machine learning to help finds ways to enable people who are hearing impaired to better understand and react to the world around them. Amos Miller, who is blind and understands first-hand how important technology is for people with disabilities, said working for Microsoft’s Artificial Intelligence and Research team is like “working in a toy store.” Jessica Rafuse, a program manager with Microsoft Accessibility and an employment attorney by trade, shared about her experience being a champion for the inclusive hiring program. And Beth Anne Katz, a program manager, explained how her long-hidden struggle with mental illness and depression reached a welcome turning point with the assistance of a “most incredible boss” and the Microsoft CARES employee assistance program. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/6e4510b25921008045f8d69d40d2a442.jpg Discounted apps will help assuage the back-to-school blues, with savings of as much as 50 percent on heavy hitters such as Movie Edit Pro Windows Store Edition, Stagelight and Complete Anatomy. And don’t forget about next month’s STEM Saturdays workshops, as Microsoft partners with Mattel Hot Wheels® Speedometry™ for free, drop-in sessions that offer a chance to engage in science, technology and math projects hosted by Microsoft Stores. Participants will sensor-monitor cars as they compete on the iconic Hot Wheels orange track, measuring speed and force of impact during collision. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/2bc3abe7deefb056d1f32cbe383a60e7.jpg This week on our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn pages, we featured the four all-women teams who participated in the #MakeWhatsNext Patent Program. From devices that convert text to braille in real-time to a VR game that can prevent bullying, these extraordinary women are changing the world with their groundbreaking inventions, and the support of the Patent Program. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/7dbfcf56ac377444860ec9b322680cfd.jpg Whew, summer may be winding down, but there’s still a lot going on. TD Bank Group is positioning itself for the future through a digital transformation in the workplace, and its move to Microsoft 365 is an integral part of that evolution. Microsoft 365 is empowering the bank’s employees to be more mobile and productive so they can serve customers where it is most convenient for them. OneDrive for Business Online cloud-based storage allows employees to access and share files regardless of location or device. The company is designing flex-based workspaces to accommodate mobile productivity and using Office 365 collaboration services to support a new era of teamwork across the organization. The move to Office 365 is already paying off — the company is saving 50 percent in email costs and expects additional savings from consolidating devices to reduce storage costs and limiting the number of third-party applications it uses. “As we achieve our vision for a new workplace and corporate culture focused on mobility and agility, we’re positioning ourselves for success in the digital world, ensuring that our products and services continue to resonate with customers well into the future,” says Jeff Henderson, executive vice president and chief information officer of TD Bank Group. Hello Windows Insiders! Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16273 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring and Skip Ahead. Flighting Update for PC We have some updates for Windows Insiders on how we’ll be releasing new builds going forward for the next couple of months. As explained when we introduced Skip Ahead, we have “forked” the release into its own branch we call “RS3_RELEASE”. Many Windows Insiders will recall we did the same thing for the Windows 10 Creators Update when we started flighting builds from the “RS2_RELEASE” branch. Insiders in the Fast ring have been getting new builds from this branch over the last few weeks now. We are now at the point of the development cycle for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update where our focus is now on stabilization for release to the world. This means that we intend to release these builds to Insiders more quickly to both the Fast and Slow rings as these builds we include mostly bug fixes. For Insiders who joined Skip Ahead, we will continue to release builds from the RS_PRERELEASE branch but they won’t be released at the same pace as builds from RS3_RELEASE. Since we are just now beginning development for RS4, Insiders will soon notice a jump in build numbers just like we did early in RS3. Also because we are just beginning development for RS4, Insiders shouldn’t expect to see a lot of big changes or new features just yet. Our engineering teams remain focused on getting the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update ready for release. This remains our priority. Skip Ahead is now full so if you try to join, it will let you know that in the Settings app. But don’t worry! Once the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is released, Skip Ahead goes away and all Insiders in the Fast ring will get moved back to the RS_PRERELEASE branch for RS4. What’s New in Build 16273 For PC Try out emoji notifications with My People Help test My People and emoji notifications on the desktop by adding the new Windows Insider Emoji Bot to your taskbar in My People and ask it to send you some emoji. We added a Quest in the Feedback Hub so you can rate the experience. Introducing the Bahnschrift font Our new first OpenType Variable Font Bahnschrift is now included in builds. This new font industry standard enables us to pack an entire typeface family into a single file with infinite variability. No longer are you constrained to simple weights like Light, Regular, and Bold. Now you can have an infinite range of font styles, with smooth interpolation from Light to Bold and beyond. Better still: because a single, efficient variable font can replace several static fonts, variable fonts save a lot of space. To learn more about variable font technology, see the articles in Wired, Designmodo, or Alphabettes. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/51c0b1dbcddecf60336660ed4cbccc0e.png Bahnschrift is our own rendition of the DIN font standard. Apart from being the standard road sign font in Germany and much of Europe, DIN is frequently used by graphic designers for its high legibility and clean, hard-working design style. Bahnschrift supports a smooth spectrum of weights from Light to Bold, as you can see in the above image. In this image, each letter is a slightly different weight than its neighbors. All these weights are “duplexed” – meaning they do not change in width when you change weight. You can switch from Light to Bold without changing the layout at all. Windows Shell Improvements We fixed an issue resulting in Start, Action Center and notification toasts at times having a background that was 100% transparent. We fixed an issue from recent flights where the Action Center icon might show it had some number of notifications but when you opened Action Center no notifications were displayed. We fixed an issue from recent flights where suggested apps were visible in Start despite the related setting being off. For now, if you encounter this please try toggling Settings > Personalization > Start > “Occasionally show suggestions in Start”. We fixed a recent issue where removed placeholder tiles in Start might come back after explorer.exe restarted. We fixed an issue resulting in certain live tiles not updating in the last flight, including the Weather and Money apps. If you were impacted by this you may need to unpin and repin the live tile for it to work again. We fixed an issue from recent flights where typing immediately after opening up the Start menu would sometimes not switch to Cortana, even though if you tapped the Cortana icon Cortana was up and running. We fixed an issue where notification groups in the Action Center couldn’t be dismissed by swiping across the app name. We also fixed a recent issue where notifications in the Action Center couldn’t be dismissed with pen. We’ve fixed some timing issues so that swiping to dismiss a notification toast should feel more reliable now. You can now middle click to dismiss a notification toast! We fixed an issue resulting in no “Safe to Remove Hardware” notification after following the device removal process from the “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” tray icon We fixed an issue where it wasn’t possible to tab to the quick action area of Action Center if there were no notifications visible. We fixed an issue where the network flyout might become unresponsive when Bluetooth was enabled. We fixed a deadlock resulting in Start, the network flyout, and other Shell UI elements becoming unresponsive after tethering certain Android phones. We fixed an issue that could potentially result in Start not launching after installing a 3rd party IME. We fixed an issue where if you started dragging a tile on Start just as the flip animation started in the tile, it could result in the tile becoming invisible under your finger until you released it. We fixed an issue where right clicking on an image file in File Explorer would show “Next desktop background” instead of “Set as desktop background” in recent flights. We fixed an issue where desktop icons sometimes couldn’t be drag-and-dropped to certain places on the desktop, even though the desired spot appeared to align to the same grid as the other icons already in place. We fixed an issue where desktop icons could become unexpectedly spaced out when logging in after the primary monitor’s DPI had changed. Microsoft Edge Improvements When using Find on Page, pressing F3 will now go to the next result. Shift+F3 will go to the previous result. We fixed an issue resulting in certain websites not rendering correctly when used in inPrivate mode. We fixed an issue resulting in Microsoft Edge sometimes getting into a state where after right-clicking a website the context menu would immediately dismiss. We fixed an issue which resulted in the video element defaulting to a black background if the size didn’t match the aspect ratio of the video. We fixed an issue where right-clicking and selecting “copy link” would sometimes not work as expected. We fixed an issue where copying bitmap images from Microsoft Edge wouldn’t work. We fixed an issue where pasting Chinese, Japanese, or Korean text into Microsoft Edge in recent builds would result in question marks instead of the expected characters. We fixed an issue where misspelled words in input fields were sometimes not updated when a correction is selected from the spell checker. We fixed an issue from recent flights where a session cookie might unexpectedly get overwritten, potentially resulting in login issues on certain websites after a page refresh. We fixed an issue resulting in status updates to Facebook.com sometimes being erased during input. We fixed an issue causing certain controls such as calendar widgets to break on some sites. We fixed an issue for websites with images added using source-set where the height would sometimes unexpectedly be computed to 30px. We fixed an issue where clicking Run on a download in Microsoft Edge that required elevation would result in input no longer being received in that window until switching focus away and back to it. We fixed an issue resulting in the tab bar sometimes drawing incorrectly after dragging the window between two monitors with different DPIs. We fixed an issue from recent builds where you couldn’t use the letter ‘x’ when renaming a favorite. We fixed an issue resulting in a crash when using drag and drop to rearrange favorites. We fixed an issue resulting in not being able to type @ using the Hungarian or Czech keyboard in recent flights. We fixed an issue where PDFs containing xref streams might have rendered as blank pages in the last few flights in Microsoft Edge. Scrollbars in Microsoft Edge will now be the correct size on secondary monitors where the DPI differs from the primary monitor. Input Improvements We fixed an issue that resulted in words sometimes being input twice when using the handwriting panel in certain websites using Microsoft Edge. We fixed an issue where you could end up with multiple underlined words when using shapewriting in a text field then switching focus away from and back to that text field and shapewriting some more. We fixed an issue in Win32 apps where a space wasn’t automatically inserted if you used shapewriting to write a word then tapped a letter to start a new word on the touch keyboard. We fixed an issue with the Hebrew touch keyboard where tapping certain keys didn’t produce the expected character. Please take a moment with this build to try out the touch keyboard in your language and let us know how it feels for you. We fixed an issue where the Full touch keyboard layout was unexpectedly not available at certain screen resolutions. We fixed an issue when using the Emoji Panel with Narrator where using tab to switch sections would resulting in Narrator repeating the old section name for each emoji instead of the current one. Changes to pen behavior in recent Insider builds have been met with positive feedback, however also caused drawing in certain apps to work incorrectly. In this Insider build we’ve made a change to address this feedback pertaining to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, and Clip Studio Paint. General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC We fixed the issue causing the Virus and Threat Protection pillar in Windows Defender Security Center to show as “unknown” after upgrading to the last build. We fixed an issue from recent flights resulting in the idle timer continually being reset – thus preventing the display from going to sleep. We fixed an issue resulting in an unexpected 0x800706BE error sometimes when trying to initiate a remote desktop connection in recent flights. We fixed an issue some Insiders were experiencing where Windows Update’s Delivery Optimization settings would reset back to default upon leaving the page. If you previously accessed Device Encryption on the About Settings page, you’ll find we’ve moved it to its own page under Settings > Update & Security > Device Encryption. We fixed an issue where the lock screen might unexpectedly just show your theme color instead of the selected custom or Spotlight image after upgrading in recent builds. We fixed an issue from recent flights resulting in certain apps crashing when attempting to use the app to capture a picture using the webcam. We fixed an issue resulting in Node.js (v6.9.4) not being able to run scripts stored in OneDrive or access any paths in OneDrive. We fixed an issue resulting in an unexpectedly large number of OneDrive app-requested download notifications. We fixed an issue where using Alt-P to open the preview pane in File Explorer for PDFs associated with Acrobat would say “This file can’t be previewed.” in recent builds instead of displaying their first page.We fixed an issue where right-clicking on the volume icon in the systray might sometimes unexpectedly take 3-5 seconds for the context menu to appear. We fixed an issue where changing the selected option in the dropdown under Multiple Displays in Display Settings didn’t do anything. We fixed an issue resulting in adding a phone or taking a new profile picture in Settings not working if Settings was run elevated. We fixed an issue resulting in DVD Player failing with error 0xC00D36B4 on machines with DX10 graphics cards. We fixed an issue for PowerShell in Japanese where the “た。” character of the sentence “検証 23% が 完了しました。” would display repeatedly when running SFC /scannow. We fixed an issue resulting in certain games like Cut the Rope, Buggy Racing and others from unexpectedly extending past the bottom of the screen when put in full screen mode in recent flights. We fixed an issue with the custom color picker, for example seem in Color Settings, where panning with touch across the colors would move the area rather than smoothly update the selected color. We fixed an issue resulting in acrylic material’s noise layer blinking in a second after the rest of the UI if the UI was animating in on top of a video. We’ve improved the rendering performance when using touch to pan UWP app windows that have applied acrylic material. We fixed an issue resulting in XAML controls sometimes unexpectedly becoming pure white in recent builds when transparency was enabled. We fixed an issue resulting in the OneNote app sometimes having rendering issues in recent flights (for example, missing text blocks). We fixed an issue resulting in Forza Horizon 3 crashing when loading (after selecting “continue”). As a result of low usage, Screen Saver functionality has been disabled in themes. Screen Saver functionality in Group Policies, Control Panel, and Sysprep is now deprecated but continues to be functional. Lock screen features and policies are preferred. Hello Windows Insiders! Today we are pleased to be releasing Windows Server Insider Preview Build 16267 to Windows Insiders. To obtain the build, registered Insiders may navigate directly to the Windows Server Insider Preview download page. Matching symbols and the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) packages are available on the same page. When installed on a Windows 10 client, RSAT allows a user to remotely manage and administer Insider Preview builds of Windows Server via GUI tools. Valid on Windows 10 client builds greater than 16250. For the best experience, the Windows Server team recommends a clean install. If you have not yet registered as an Insider, register through the Windows Insiders for Business program or the Windows Insider program. If you registered using an MSA account at the Windows Insider program, your MSA account may be used to access the page and to download builds until this is resolved. The latest Windows Server build and matching symbols are available for download here. Simply click on the desired file(s) and save locally. Matching Windows Server container images will be available via the Docker Hub. For more information about Windows Server containers and Insider builds, please visit http://aka.ms/containers/insiders. The following keys are available for unlimited activations of Windows Server. These keys may be used throughout the pre-release cycle. Windows Server Datacenter Core: B69WH-PRNHK-BXVK3-P9XF7-XD84W Windows Server Standard Core: V6N4W-86M3X-J77X3-JF6XW-D9PRV The RSAT version currently posted has not been updated, so if you already have it, you won’t need to download it again. It’s all about your feedback! Use the Feedback Hub app to provide feedback on Windows Server builds. Feedback Hub comes pre-installed on Windows 10. Register a Windows 10 device with the Windows Insider or Windows Insider for Business programs. Open the Feedback Hub application. Choose the Server category and then the appropriate subcategory for your feedback. Please indicate what edition and build number you are providing feedback on. The Feedback Hub app cannot scan a server for diagnostic information, however you may manually attach screenshots or other files to your feedback entry. We encourage you to visit the Windows Server Insiders space on the Microsoft Tech Communities forum to collaborate, share and learn from experts. The expiration date for this server preview build is 12/4/2017. Known issues Cluster Sets: A couple of key functionalities to enable end-to-end testing of Cluster Sets scenarios are not present in this build, so defer all evaluation of this scenario to a future build. When a computer runs the Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE) from a local drive, the EFI system partition, which contains the WinPE image (boot.wim), does not have a drive letter assigned. This issue can adversely affect some automation. Apps that call into the firewall, such apps that use networking, may become unresponsive until the user reboots because of an application hang end-task error (0xCFFFFFFF) in the Windows firewall API library (FirewallAPI.dll), which occurs when the library is blocked on an advanced local procedure call (ALPC) port while attempting to diagnose a connection failure and retrieve information. A stop error may occur during volume repair in a cluster. The recommended workaround is to restart the computer. No corruption or data loss is expected. The end of August is vacation season and—while many Microsoft employees are currently away from their desks and computers—the company continues its drumbeat of exciting news. Join us for this edition of Weekend Reading and learn recent highlights from Microsoft far and wide. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/132e295e4eb2da592a63846e1a9deb96.jpg Speaking of late summer, it was in the the searing midday heat of the Nevada desert that Microsoft researchers recently tested a system that uses artificial intelligence to keep a sailplane (a type of glider) in the air without using a motor. The complex AI system, which can identify things like air temperature, wind direction and areas where it isn’t allowed, autonomously finds and catches rides on naturally occurring thermals, similar to how many birds stay aloft. The work is a testbed for AI technologies in unpredictable environments. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/7932dcd1eb9383625afd878364a7651c.jpg A new web series called “Making mixed reality” celebrates developers, designers and artists using Windows Mixed Reality to create apps and experiences. The series debuted Wednesday with a conversation with Lucas Rizzotto, an award-winning mixed reality creator, technologist and designer. Rizzotto has two HoloLens apps in the Windows Store: MyLab, a chemistry education app, and CyberSnake, a game that incorporates spatial sound and holographic burgers. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/f390824e9e7cde5d8735d9ed3a306f01.jpg Every successful company will become a digital business in the near future. But not every company making that attempt will find success. Why do some companies fall short in their digital transformation efforts? The three primary factors for failure include modernizing only the business applications, data centers or network infrastructure and then stopping, writes Anand Eswaran, corporate vice president of Microsoft Digital, Services, and Success on Microsoft Transform. “…You have to rethink everything from how we work and the future of customer experiences, to products and business models,” Eswaran writes. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/ec076e80af83f84fe4a8aff09692aa56.jpg Microsoft has acquired Cycle Computing, a leader in cloud computing orchestration, to help make it easier than ever for customers to use High-Performance Computing (HPC) and other Big Computing capabilities in the cloud. “For too long, Big Computing has been accessible only to the most well-funded organizations. At Microsoft, we believe that access to Big Computing capabilities in the cloud has the power to transform many businesses and will be at the forefront of breakthrough experimentation and innovation in the decades to come,” writes Jason Zander, Microsoft Azure corporate vice president. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/a1df9c260e2a8fe8477de1b7c7e59a4f.jpg If you’re getting ready for fall classes and activities, the Back-to-School Discounted Apps Collection in the Windows Store has some great deals. They include 20 percent off Complete Anatomy in-app purchases, 30 percent off Stagelight in-app purchases and 50 percent off Movie Edit Plus Pro Windows Store Edition. https://extremetechsupport.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/2048ce761d107f9658a28abda84ec008.jpg This week on the Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, we featured Sky Yi. Sky is a middle school student who wrote a letter to Brad Smith as an assignment for one of his classes. Upon receiving the note, Brad traveled to the middle school in Nevada to surprise Sky. This letter reminded us about the power of education and, as everyone is heading back to school, we’re celebrating the sharp students and dedicated teachers whose passions for learning empower us all. Thanks for joining us for Weekend Reading. Check back next Friday for another round-up of the week’s top events. Others will point to timeless design – think of the BMW 2002 or the Renault Alpine A110 as prime examples. What about incredible performance? With cars like the 2013 Caterham Superlight R500 and the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series, drivers will never lack power and agility. Is it luxury you want?
