  1. hi all, everyone ok? i am now using my new comp, 2.4 Pentium 4, 512mb ram, nothing compared to what some of u lot r running but sweet as a nut for me, it has a nvidia geforce4 mx 440 installed, but i dont know anything at all about graphics card, can someone tell me is a 3d rage pro better as i have been given one and not sure if to leave the geforce installed? the rage card says it was made in 1998, rage pro AGP and secondly, would i be able to take the 512mb ram stick out of my old pc and stick it in this one's secondary slot? my old pc was a 1.6GHZ celeron..
  2. hi tootech, broke into my savings and purchased me a new copy of windows XP pro, like plastice nev said, it was my disk that was causing the problems and the reason for my monitor turning off was a dodgy cd rom drive, im assuming, after i installed a new one it worked fine! thanks for all the help guys!
  3. hi guys, controversial subject header i know lol, but basically a friend of mine has forgotten his password on his pc, he has majority of his uni work and projects on the hdd and really needs to get into it without having to reformat, does anyone know an alternative to get into it and save his work or is a format the only cure?
  4. so my copy of windows xp is causing this then? i was actually going to say, whenever the disk drive is connected with XP in, thats when it crashes, so must get me an XP disk. when i do, will the installation go ahead without the monitor going off u think?
  5. its a full operating disk, it came with the pc, but my problem is with the monitor?
  6. another tedious problem, one after the other! hi guys, as mentioned in my previous thread regarding bios settings for me to install windows xp,( thx for the help mind, i have now configured it correctly) i am now stuck on a weird and tedious new problem which literally is driving me up the wall basically, when i start my machine, SOMETIMES the monitor will load up the emachines page, then it will go straight to "press any key to boot from cd" - which i do, then the windows xp screen comes up, - (the blue screen saying initialising installation), then, as soon as it does, my monitor turns itself off - the green light turning to orange and thus, i have to keep turning my machine off. i dont know a lot about bios settings, but i have chose video card setting to AGP instead of PCI, at other times, as soon as my CD rom drive connected, it will just go to sleep and i'll get DPMS message, if i leave the cd rom drive disconnected, i get, windows is missing a .dll file from system 32 system info it was a prebuilt machine,590 emachines, pentium 4 2.4ghz, which i have installed into a completely new tower -(see previous threads lol), i'm using a ADI microscan M700 monitor and the model number (on the old case mind) is EMACHINES 590 (UK) PART NO: 904.042, (Geforce 4mx 440se - dont know if relevant or not) can anyone shed any light on this, and also, i have tried installing another graphics card, which done the same thing, do i just need to get a new monitor? - (but this monitor giving me all this grief is fine when i'm using THIS pc) so i really am clueless, and, of course, have my hammer at the ready! :D
  7. hi mate, it was a prebuilt machine,590 emachines, pentium 4 2.4ghz, which i have installed into a completely new tower, i'm using a ADI microscan M700 monitor and the model number (on the old case mind) is EMACHINES 590 (UK) PART NO: 904.042, (Geforce 4mx 440se - dont know if relevant or not) im desperate to get my new comp running
  8. the monitor i am using now is the one that is giving me all the problems, (this is the monitor spared from my rage earlier lol) so i cant understand why it wont work with the other comp! (just trying to give as much info as possible)
  9. ok mate, will do! thanks for helpin tho mate, hopefully this should be the last issue before i'm up and running!
  10. p.s., if i dont connect the power lead to the cd drive, then the pc loads up to give me a screen saying windows is missing a file, a .dll in system 32 or something, when i connect the cd drive, sometimes i dont even get that far!
  11. ok then mate, my monitor is a ADi MicroScan M700 19inch, and i'm trying to plug it into a GeForce 64 graphics card, it loads up, says press any key to boot from disc, when i do, i get the windows blue screen then the monitos just switches itself off, u pretty certain its a BIOS option?
  12. Help needed before i smash another monitor! hi all, i have successfully configured my bios to boot from cd first, however when the XP disk goes to work my monior keeps going off saying "DPMS" despite it being screwed in tight to the graphics card, i've already broke one monitor in temper (childish i know, but i am very short fused) and really need this sorting, does anyone know whats causing this? i literally have steam coming out of my ears!
  13. tried what uve said mate, doesnt work. on the first screen when i go into the bios there is nothing in primary master/primary slave and sec master and sec slave, nothing there, feel really angry, so close to just smashing my pc to bits
  14. how do u change and save the boot order wolfey?
  15. hi all, first of all thanks for u all taking the time to respond to my tedious posts regarding the tower and case issue with my hdd, its all been sorted now as i found a cheap and cheerful tower case in a second hand shop! but.... i have plugged my hdd in, (IDE) and set the jumper to master, i have then installed a CD rom drive and set it to slave with the jumper (both r running off the same IDE cable) but i dont know how to configure my bios, when i go into it it says no primary master/slave/ secondary master/slave, and when the pc loads up normally i just keep getting " no operating system found" i have my win xp disc in the CD drive and am just waiting to load it all up, but cant get past this, anyone able to tell me what to do in a little " step-by-step" list?! :D
  16. there was only the one slot available mate in my current one mate, before i took the cage out, but i desperately want to use my old tower now
  17. true, lol prob just gonna have to end up buying a new tower then, do u know off hand what a P4 motherboard will fit into? having nothing but probs
  18. i would have used my current pc's hdd to install in my old tower, however my old motherboard doesnt have a sata drive connection and this hdd is sata how do u screw those, "rounded" hole like screws out of the base?
  19. there are only slots for 2 cd drives and a floppy, which i have bent all out of place.. i removed the steel cages and installed it in my current pc, but i cant remember how to remove them?!
  20. i havent got any slots mate, just the top two cd slots, floppy drive and NOTHING else at all!
  21. its my primary drive mate, no where to put it, all the steel has been bent out of place and dont know what to do, ive fallen on hard times and thus cant afford to buy anything, how would i make a case>? or could i cable tie it on?
  22. hi guys, i havent got a slot to install my hdd, despite trying to bend the steel bracket of the floppy drive (to no avail) i have finally given up and just wanted to know would it be safe to screw my hdd to the bottom of the base so it would be on its side?
  23. mate how do u set up a network? all i have is an ethernet cable and two pc's
  24. hi all, basically, all i want to know is how do i connect my new pc tower to my current PC and copy over what i want from this hdd to the new one? i am running windows XP pro on both machines, i simply havent got the time, money, or inclination to burn endless amounts of disks, i just want to plug my tower into this pc and copy what i want across to the hdd on the new one? can anyone explain this to me or is it just a case of pluggin in an ethernet cable? proper clueless guys and ur answers will be very much appreciated cheers guys
