Connected to the internet but cannot browse

Hiya, So do you think that might be the problem then? I can't have a higher speed as my phone line is on an extension and can't handle the higher speeds. This problem has come about the past 9 months though and never had it before that. I've been on the same speed with same equipment. Could I just buy a new modem? Thanks for all the advice :) -

Hiya, I have a speedtouch cable modem that just plugs in to my computer. I'm not sure about an ethernet cable and network card, sorry I don't know what they are! I've had this modem about 4 years so it's quite old. I'm not wireless. Sorry I'm a bit vague but I'm PC literate! One error message did say something about an ethernet card at one point but it was only the once and I don't know waht an ethernet card is :( Thanks, Amanda. -
Hi, I did post this problem on here months ago but we couldn't come to any conclusion to my problem so thought I would explain it to see if anyone else can shed any light on the matter. First of all, I have Virgin broadband connection but can only set up a network connection by using the dial up option on the network wizard...but then b/band connects as it says 1.8mbps in the bottom right hand corner. I cannot use the network wizard to set it up on b/band though, strange huh? Also, every now and again, varying from once a day to 20 times a day, my internet connection stays but I am unable to browse and sites with any web broswer (firefox or IE). The message just comes up "make sure you have typed the correct web adress". This is more likely to happen when I have been idle but not always. Any ideas on what the problem may be? I have done a thourough clean of my compouter following the instructions from here. I use Avira and Sunbelt. Thanks, Bubs

Hiya, I'm not having much luck here. I used the clean up tool and followed your instructionss etc and reinstalled from the link provided, but it will now start to download and then says interent explorer has encounted an eroor and has to close! I tried using the clean up tool once again and rebooting etc and trying to reinstall again but the same thing happed. Any ideas? I appreicate your help, Thanks

It took me to the updates page and said to install the following: Microsoft Windows Updatebutton {padding: 0px 14px 1px 14px;width: 80px;height: 21px;overflow: visible;line-height: 15px;cursor: default;} a:hover { text-decoration: underline } a { text-decoration: none } Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86 Download size: 0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install) http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/shared/images/info_16x.gif Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is a full cumulative update that contains many new features building incrementally upon .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, and includes cumulative servicing updates to the .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0 subcomponents. The .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update provides important application compatibility updates. This combined Service Pack and update is applicable to .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5. Details... but then it just says the follwing: "some of the updates were not installed" "the following udates were not installed" Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86 HELP! I feel like i'm going to throw my PC out of the window soon, haha!

I have actually just finished looking at that before I posted on here. I tried method 1 but it didn't work. I tried to download the update agent but couldn't find the download or how to do it! I think service pack 3 was recently installed. I have 11gb of free space of my PC so I think from what I've read that should be enough. Should I uninstall service pack 3? I don't really understand much about PC's I'm afraid. Thanks
-
Hiya, I'm not sure if this is in the right place as I'm not very computer literate! I have service pack 3 on my PC (windows XP) and I cannot install the automatic updates. The yellow icon appears at the bottom right hand screen and it trys to install but fails. Also every time my PC shuts down it says it will install updates but doesn't. Any ideas? Thanks :)
