  1. Hi First make sure all of your motherboard drivers are up-to-date. In XP, after a USB port isn't used for a long while the USB driver built into the OS sets the OHCI controller to suspend. When you plug a device back in, it can sometimes fail to wake up properly. This problem was supposedly fixed in SP1 but there is a related registry hack that may still be able to help. Start/Run. In the run box type "regedit" without the quotes and press enter. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\Usb Create the Usb key if it doesn't already exist. Under this key, create a new DWORD value called DisableSelectiveSuspend and give it a value of 1. Then restart the PC. Alternatively, removing all entries relating to USB in Device Manager and all associated USB drivers will force XP into refreshing the USB driver stack. Begin by unplugging all USB devices, then use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall any USB driver software. Next, boot up into safe mode and go to Device Manager. Once in device manager make sure "Show hidden devices" is checked under the View menu. Uninstall all device entries in this order: 1. USB peripheral devices (printers etc.) 2. HID and/or Composite USB (Human Interface Devices) (I hope you have a PS/2 keyboard or mouse for this step). 3. USB Root Hub(s) 4. USB Host Controller(s) (Universal or Enhanced Host Controllers) Then boot back into Windows (not safe mode) and it should populate the Root Hubs & Host controllers again. Proceed to plug your USB devices back in. Be aware that some USB printers and scanners need to have their drivers installed first before you plug them in.
  2. Thanks maynardvdm.
  3. Hi Maryport I would consider reformatting the HDD and installing a fresh copy of Windows. I'm not sure the problem is OS related but at least you could rule it out.
  4. Hi At least you resolved half of the problem. The online gaming issue sounds like a different matter altogether. Take care.

  6. There are 4 versions of the file. Depends on which SP he is running. mpnotify.exe 5.1.2600.0 mpnotify.exe 5.0.2134.1 mpnotify.exe 5.2.3790.0 mpnotify.exe 6.0.6000.16386 My guess is the fix is mpnotify.exe. If not he can provide his SP version and we can try something else.
  7. I haven't used XP in so long I honestly couldn't remember. Try this, if I'm wrong see link below. After the post screen start hitting the F8 key on the keyboard (that much I'm sure about). This should bring you to the Advanced Options menu. There should be a choice there to boot into Safe Mode with networking. A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP

  12. Download Mozilla Firefox 3.0.10. Backup your current Firefox profile with MozBackup before uninstalling. After you have backed up your profile uninstall your existing Firefox. Navigate to the following paths and verify that Mozilla is gone: C:\Documents and Settings\???\Application Data\ (Unhide folders, Explorer/Tools tab/Folder Options/View) C:\Program Files Start/Run. In the Run box type regedit and press enter. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER Expand Software Look for "Mozilla" if it is there, right click on it and delete it. Now go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Expand Software Look for "Mozilla" if it is there, right click on it and delete it. Reboot the computer and install the new Firefox. For troubleshooting purposes do not restore your profile just yet. I want you to surf the internet and see if your surfing is faster. Firefox has a configuration page ( about:config). Malware will alter these settings to suit their own needs sometimes resulting in problems for the user.

  18. Hi Wolfeymole actually gave you the best advise, reformat and start from scratch. I would aim my attention toward a good system recovery application if I were you, I personally use Acronis True Image, Windows System Restore is okay but not as good as imaging. Vista can also image your partition, If you decide to reformat it would be a good time to set up another partition for your backup, you can't put your backup on the same partition you are restoring. In regard to your other issue, Anti-Virus. Don't expect it to catch everything, you need to sharpen your own skills in regard to dealing with worms. You can start by learning what they are and how they function. See link. Computer virus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Now most worms, not all, need to run at startup. I personally use a program called Startup Organizer, it detects if anything is added to my startup (registry) or removed. This also applies to services. Once detected it gives the full path to the file which was added. If your not sure about its intentions, Google it. If you find it to be harmful just follow the path, kill it with the task manager, and manually remove it. You have a ways to go but if you're going to be using P2P software you will either be a very good operator in the end or totally defeated.
  19. Hi You should send a special thanks to super mod manardvdm and administrator Wolfeymole for reopening your thread. I'll get back to you ASAP.

  21. Hi Try this. (untested) Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options. Open Folder Options and click on the view tab. Check Show Hidden Files, move down and also check Show Hidden System Files. Click okay and close. Navigate to: C:\Users\???\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\fiiqdzuy.default\Cache Right click on "Mozilla" and all the sub folders and uncheck read only, click okay and close. Now delete the cache manually. None of these folders should be hidden, if they are unhide them (with the exception of AppData) . If that's works do the same for IE Explorer and Safari, I'm not sure where the cache is located for Safari, Google it. Don't forget to go back to Folder Options and hide your folders. C:\Users\???\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files Also check your host file, make sure it isn't cluttered with a bunch of links that shouldn't be there: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts I don't know which is your primary browser but you can backup Firefox, see link below. There is software out there for backing up IE and Safari as well. MozBackup - Backup tool for Firefox and Thunderbird

  23. Hi I get the error messages as well if I don't do the following (Note: if you are not familiar with the registry find someone who is). Uninstall the old Office and reboot. Even if you have not installed Office still do the following (if you use PowerPoint Viewer you may have to reinstall it): Start>Run. In the run box type "regedit" w/o quotes. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER Expand Software Expand Microsoft Delete Office Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and perform the same actions Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Expand Software Expand Microsoft Delete Office Install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, see link. Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility Reboot the computer and open the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and look for MS Office products, if you find any remove them. You should be able to install MS Office now.
