Hi CeeDee1, I haven't got a definite answer for you, but does your computer beep at you when you first try and start it? And if so, is it just a single beep that you hear. Can you start your computer in Safe mode? (tap F8 after starting up) Does your keyboard work on another computer? Check out the keyboard and mouse connections. Is there a build up of dust inside the computer case? If so give it a clean out...Carefully! Maybe you could report back on your findings..

Monitor not recognised?
PseFrank replied to OneleggedMum's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I wouldn't bin the monitor just yet. You could have a problem with a video card. Does your computer beep once when you start it? If it does anything other than one short beep, that might give us a clue as to what the problem is. If your computer is beeping more than once, can you tell us how many beeps, and also if they are long or short. Can you also tell us what your Bios version is? To find out about bios version press the Start key + R to bring up the Run box. Type in the following...."msinfo32.exe" without the quotes. Hit OK When the window opens look down the list and you will see BIOS Version/Date It will say Award or Phoenix or something like that. Can you tell us this information please. (Only needed if PC is beeping more than once) I'm assuming that your connections are ok and that it was working ok before this time. If by chance it stopped working after you had reconnected it (For whatever reason). Make sure you are connecting to the correct socket...There may be more than one that would take your monitor lead. -
Why does my monitor only work for 15 mins.?
PseFrank replied to Mokles's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Do you have a friend or family member nearby who would allow you to plug your monitor into their computer? That way you would be able to establish if your monitor is on the way out. -
I've done a search on this subject pertaining to Windows ME but At the moment am unable to find any information. But...... What you want, if I'm understanding you correctly can be done in Windows XP. So it might work in Windows ME as well. You have nothing to lose by conducting an experiment. Try this... 1) Open up your My Documents or My Pictures folder. 2) Make 3 or more new folders, and give them all different names. 3) Select all of the new folders. (It does not matter if they are divided by other files or folders) 4) Now Right Click on the first of the folders and click Rename. Call it something like My Test. 5) Hit the Enter key on your keyboard. The first folder should now be named My Test...The second will be named My Test (1)... The third My Test (2) and so on.... Naming files using the above method is slightly different. When renaming a batch of files you do exactly the same as you did with the folders except you Must add the file extension when naming the first file. Example: If you have 30 jpeg photos from your weekend in the city, and lets say that 10 where taken at the Boat show... 10 at the Art gallery... and 10 at the Beach. Select all of the Boat show pics and right click on the first one and rename it Boat show.jpg. Now hit the Enter key. And you should have the Boat show.jpg... and 9 others named Boat show (1).jpg ..Boat show (2).jpg and so on... Now of course you'd have to do the same with your Art gallery pics and also the Beach pics. If you don't add the file extension this won't work properly. Note: Just for those people who don't know... If you want to select multiple files or folders that are positioned sequentially... Click on the first one to highlight it and then press and hold the Shift Key before clicking on the last file or folder in the sequence. To select multiple files or folders that are divided by other files... Press and hold down the CTRL Key and click on each file or folder in turn. Hope this works out for you.

Forgive me for suggesting the obvious, but have you inadvertently turned off your laptops wireless capability?....Maybe a small slider switch?

Restarts when running game
PseFrank replied to Abu Baker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Abu, I think you should install SP3. Whether or not this would affect your current problem remains to be seen. But after 13th July 2010 you will no longer receive updates for SP2. Click the link below for more details... Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) Solution Center Is your computer set up to receive Automatic Updates? Go Start > Control Panel > Automatic Updates http://http//www.flickr.com/photos/8394013@N06/4507712968/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/8394013@N06/4507712968/ -
I don't want to interfere with any of the instructions already given, but I had to remove this nasty from a computer earlier on this evening. I Was able to start the computer in question in Safe Mode, so this may not be of use to everyone. This is what I done: Windows XP 1. Reboot to Safe Mode. 2. Go........Start > My Computer > (c:)\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data Note: If you cannot see the Application Data folder do this.... Click Start > My Computer. Under the Tools tab select Folder Options and then under the View tab check the radio buttonbeside the text "Show hidden files and folders". Click Apply > OK 3. In the Application Data folder you should see a folder with a 8 digit number for a name. (Example.......53705525............This was the actual name of the folder I found. But your's may be a different number. 4. Delete the folder. (There shouldn't be a folder here with a numerical name) You should now be able to reboot normally without any sign of the Security Tool. You can now download (If you don't already have it) Malwarebytes and scan your computer. Don't forget to empty your Recycle Bin. The above actions worked for me. Note: For those using either Vista or Win 7. You should find the offending folder (The one with a number for a name) in the Program Data folder. I've read that another way that someone got over this problem was to go ahead as if you are going to purchase the Security Tool software....But!!! Give completely false name, address, and card details. The writer of the post where I read this said that the Security Tool disappeared from their screen after having a couple of go's using this method. I've not tried this so I cannot personally vouch for doing this.

Sizing of windows when opening
PseFrank replied to madon37s's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I'll add a small tip to what Jelly Bean has already said. After clicking on the square next to the red cross (I think Jelly Bean meant Top Right of screen) Instead of closing the window by using the red X. Go to File (Top Left of screen) and close the window by clicking Exit (bottom of menu). This should force Windows to remember the full screen/window setting. And will open every window full screen from then on... -
Hi again Mell, Thankyou for posting back. I don't think you have a problem with temperature. I am now thinking that we should give the ever helpful Plastic Nev a nudge again. I personally stopped using AVG on any of my machines a couple of years back. Now my resident AV is Avast Free addition. But we should not rely on just one program for our protection against the nasties. I'll now hand you back to Nev and the other guys to advise on a way forward..as I said before viruses, etc, are not my strong area....

2 horrible problems (media player & Office Mondo)
PseFrank replied to lukeflegg's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Luke, Hopefully Randy's suggestion will work for you. But if it doesn't, you could try Revo Uninstaller. I've only just recently tried the free version myself, and I'm quite impressed with the way this program works. As well as the free version there is a Pro version which costs $39.25. They do however offer a 30 day free trial of the pro version. It should be noted that the free version only works on 32bit systems. The pro version does support Win 7 64bit. The following link is to Revo's website. Might be worth investigating... Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download -
Hi Mell, I cannot promise that this will cure your problems, but it might help. I think that it was Plastic Nev that has at least hinted that you may have a nasty in the works. He has more experience than myself on that subject, but give this a try anyway. You've told me that your recommended page file size is 2302mb. Go to that same window again using the same path as I outlined before. Check (tick) Custom size In Initial size (MB): type 2302 In Maximum size (MB): type 2302 Now click Set Click OK You may get a window that says something like "The changes that you have made require you to restart your computer" If you do, then click all the Apply and OK boxes that you need to, and then reboot. Hope this helps you out...

Hi Mel, I assume by powerpack you mean PSU (Power Supply Unit)...forgive me if I'm being dim. More ram will need more power. What is the wattage of your PSU? And also, can you tell us what your paging file settings are? You may have details of your PSU on the invoice from the repair shop. If not you will have to look inside your tower. To check your paging file size (Virtual memory). Go.... Start Right click My Computer Click Properties Click Advanced Under performance settings click Advanced again Under Virtual Memory click Change What does Recommended say? What does Currently allocated say? I may be off the mark here...but just a thought.

Hi wolffadez, computer users forgeting their passwords is an all to common thing to happen. Sadly for you, you will find that most PC help forums ( including this one) the forum rules state that we are not allowed to offer any real help in retrieving your forgotten password. The reason for this is that if a computer is stolen, then the thief often needs help in getting into the computer. I'm not suggesting that you have stolen your computer...but it does happen! It's not clear from your question if the forgotten password is a user password who is a computer administrator. Or if it's the windows administrator account that you are unable to access. (These are two seperate accounts) People can use a computer for years and not realise that there is another administrator account that is not normally seen by the user. My advice would be that you can find how to access each type of account by googling your question. I'm sorry that I cannot help you any more than that. Good luck...

Copy & Paste from the Command Prompt Here's a helpful tip when wanting to Copy & Paste details from the command prompt. Sometimes someone who's helping us will ask for details that can only be got from the Command Prompt. When there's alot of information to record it can be a pain to have to type it all out.....Try this > Hit the Flag key + R Type "cmd"........without the quotes. Press Enter. Right click anywhere in black space. Click on Mark from the dropdown menu. Press down and hold the Shift Key. Click on the first letter of the text you want to copy. With the Shift key still pressed left click anywhere below and to the right of the text you wish to copy. ( It will turn white ) Hit the Enter Key. Open up Word or Notepad or whatever your favourite text editor is. Click where you want the text to begin. Hit Ctrl + V on your keyboard. Hit Ctrl + S to save the file. ( Just a bit of insurance ) Now you can navigate to your forum post and when you hit Ctrl + V again this will paste your text into the forum post.

how to watch a DVD on my PC ????
PseFrank replied to twedspeed's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I'm assuming that you have downloaded the K-Lite pack. It would have invited you to save the download. Did you save it?...Where did you save it to? The download comes in the form of a .exe file. Go to where you saved the file and double click on it to install it. Then follow the prompts given...... Have you already done this? -
how to watch a DVD on my PC ????
PseFrank replied to twedspeed's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi twedspeed, I'm certainly not an expert when it comes to video and audio, but the following link may help. K-Lite Codec Pack - Download To find out which operating system you have ( we already know that it's windows based ) 1. Click Start 2. Right click "My Computer"......OR "Computer" if Vista and onward. 3. Left click "Properties" from the drop down menu. You will now see a window that gives some details of your operating system. Wireless Mouse - not responding.
PseFrank replied to Quacker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Quacker, This is probably a little late for you and your friend, but might help other people with the same problem. I had just the same problem with my wireless mouse. I also tried a plug and play...No joy!! This is what I done.... 1. Boot into Safe Mode (Arrow keys are used to make the selection) 2. At the logon screen click the down arrow on your keyboard until the account you want to logon is highlighted. 3. Type your password if you have one and hit "Enter" (return key) 4. You will now see a black screen with a window in the centre telling that windows is running in safe mode. By default the word "Yes" will be highlighted at the bottom of the window. Leave that selected and hit "Enter". 5. Ok...now you have a window you can work in. You can open up "System Restore". Hit the windows flag key (Start key)... and R. "Flag key + R". This will open the "Run" dialogue. Type "CMD" without the quotes. Hit "Enter". 6. In the command prompt type "%systemroot%\system32\restore\ rstrui.exe" with no gaps and without the quotes. Hit "Enter". 7. The System Restore window will now open. Hit "Enter". 7a. Hit "Enter" again 7b. Now hit "Enter" yet again to confirm the restore point selection. 8. System Restore will now do it's thing. Be patient and sit back and watch it. Your computer will reboot during the restore process. When it's done and you have logged on again hopefully both your wireless mouse will be working along with any plug and play mice you may have connected. This worked for me today. The whole point is that you will not have had to touch your mouse throughout the whole proceedings. Having done some reading on this subject it seems that system restore will often work when run from the command line when it has failed when started normally. Maybe someone who has more experience here than me could throw some light on why that should be. Hope it helps someone out of a jam... Frank. Once again, sorry for being so late in this thread -
Do you have a recovery partition? Or have you just tried disks. Try pressing F10 when booting up.
