  1. Hi borojamie, You definitely have some nasties there. Are you still having problems trying to open/run .exe files? If so, try this: Please download exeHelper to your desktop. If your AV program throws up a warning about the program, ignore the warning. Some AV's flag this program because of how it works... that's all. Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix. A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed. Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt ( Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com and should open at the end of the scan) Note : If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together ( they will both be in the one file ). Let me have the report and also let me know if things are any better. We'll take it from there. Thanks
  2. Have you tried resetting the resolution? the higher the numbers.... the smaller the text/image size on your screen. Mine is set for 1360 x 768 ... that's a nice size for me. i use 2 monitors 19" and 17" .... size works well on both.
  3. That's very true. As the CA eTrust AV was probably part of the reinstall, i'd go along with RandyL's suggestion and get rid of it and keep Avira. The Java version you have is the correct one, so no need to update that. You can update this here: Adobe Reader 9.3 The screen resolution problem may have been caused because originally XP had a default resolution of 800x600. ( this was set to accommodate the screens around at that time.) Newer monitors now have different resolutions. If you are unsure how to change it, take a look here: Changing screen resolution in Windows XP - change resolution
  4. Hi, Did you run all the windows updates after the reinstalled the OS? Your version of IE should have been updated to version 7 automatically.
  5. Let's see what java versions etc you are running: Download Security Check from here or here. Save it to your Desktop. Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box. A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please copy and paste the contents of that document in your next reply. Thanks
  6. Hi Twiceshy, I suppose it had to happen sooner or later.... but i'm getting confused now. In beginning you said: Now you are saying: Are you connecting wirelessly or by ethernet?
  7. Try this: Click Start...Run... Type in (or copy and paste) ipconfig /flushdns then click the 'enter' key.(if typing in, don't forget there's a space between the 'g' and the '/' ) You'll get a confirmation that the flush was successful. Then: Click on Start >>> Control Panel, select the 'Network and Internet Connections' category or double click on Network Connections, depending on which View you are using. Then right click on your default connection, usually 'local area connection' for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the 'Internet Protocol' (TCP/IP) item. Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back. Select the radio dial that says 'Obtain DNS servers automatically'. Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks. If it does not prompt you to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.
  8. Does this only happen with the windows update site? Did you try clicking on the manual download link? do you get the same there?
  9. Nice one  Let me know how the 'Service Pack 3' download goes. Btw: if you use the manual download method, make sure you turn off your Anti Virus before installing it. It'll save any conflicts.
  10. Hi Twiceshy I see what you mean about having no software on the system. What did you have on it before? By doing a reinstall, all the programs you previously had would have needed to be reinstalled as well. We'll just tidy up some loose ends and then we'll see about getting you 'Service Pack3'. The error logs show you may have been struggling to get the updates... is this correct? Step 1 Double click on OTL.exe to run it. Copy the lines in the codebox below. (make sure you include the first lot of : ) :otl O4 - HKLM..\Run: [] File not found O16 - DPF: {E2883E8F-472F-4FB0-9522-AC9BF37916A7} http://platformdl.adobe.com/NOS/getPlusPlus/1.6/gp.cab (Reg Error: Key error.) After the reboot, you may need to double click OTL to launch the program and retrieve the log. Copy and paste the contents of the OTL log that comes up after the fix in your next reply. Let me have this report before going on to the next step. If you continue straight to the next step, you may lose the OTL report that comes up after the fix. Step 2 To check for updates on Windows Update, follow these steps: Use Internet Explorer to get your updates; 1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site: Microsoft Windows Update 2. Click Express (Recommended). 3. If your computer is up to date, Windows XP SP3 will be one of the updates that is automatically selected. Click Install. If your computer is not up to date, Windows Update will offer some other updates that you have to install first. Install those, and then repeat steps 1 and 2 to obtain Windows XP SP3. 4. For Windows XP SP3, review and accept the Microsoft Software License Terms. Windows XP SP3 will be downloaded to your computer, and the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Setup Wizard will help you install it. If you have problems obtaining the service pack from Windows Update, you can download the stand-alone update package from the Download Center. This page will say that this installation package is intended for IT professionals and developers. However, you can safely download this file. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center: Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers Let me know how it goes.
  11. Hi Twiceshy yep, all ok. Well done. It's fine, just give me awhile to put the reports in order and then i'll go through them. A quick look doesn't seem to be any bad.... but some tidying up to do. I'll get back to you later. Go and have a drink and put your feet up for awhile.
  12. You're doing well Twiceshy The reason the report is so big, is that it seems the OS was reinstalled on 19th Feb 2010.The report wouldn't normally be anywhere near this big.
  13. it's a nice program, you won't be disappointed. Thank you for that, every donation is a huge help. we're here any time you need us. Safe surfing.
  14. That's ok, just keep adding the posts until i have the whole report. Can i just question this: You have now run OTL 4 times. as you will only get the extra.txt by default on the first run..... we have to run OTL with these instructions to get the extra.txt to show after that: ------ Let me have the whole report with the custom scans, then if you only have this and don't have the extra.txt..... use the instructions below to get it. It will produce a main.txt as well.... but i'll already have that. The extra.txt is fairly important given your circumstances. Take your time, there's no need to rush. Double click on OTL.exe to run it. Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList. Don't check the boxes beside 'LOP Check' and 'Purity Check' this time. Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner. When done, two Notepad files will open. Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files in your next reply. You'll be good at all this by the time we have finished. :)
  15. good  Sure, no problem: Avira AntiVir Avast free Bitdefender Free MS Security Essentials ... see note* Install one of these, update the definitions and then run a full scan. Let it quarantine/delete anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything that it reports but can not remove. Note*: Upon installation MS Security Essentials will check that your OS is a legal copy.
  16. Hi A,Taylor The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker that says "Do not lose this number." If it was an OEM (factory installed) license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer affixed to the exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop.
  17. Hi Twiceshy A couple of things it could be: If you have run OTL at any time before, the Extra.txt won't be produced by default on another run. It has to be run slightly different. Another thing: The main OTL report will come up on your screen.... but the Extra.txt will be minimised. You will have click on it from your 'taskbar' to open it. If the extra.txt was produced, a copy will have been saved in the same location that the main program is stored in: Eg: if OTL is on your desktop, a copy of the extra.txt and the main.txt will be saved there as well. If it's there, just click on it to open it and then copy/paste it from there. If you can't find it.... just let me have the main.txt and we'll take it from there. Thanks.
  18. RandyL beat me to it. Yes, so sometimes you will see 'Tick' sometimes you will see 'Check' .... but they both mean the same. The 2 reports together can be quite large, depending on what's actually on your system. If you have any problems going over a text allowance for one post..... just post them one after another. 2 posts will still be fine.
  19. Hi Twiceshy I can see where Ken is coming from, he's trying to sort out your wireless problem. I'm more concerned with what 'your mate' has done to the system. Did he do a reinstall? Did he clean all the malware off the system? Why have you no software on the system now? From your description, i'm thinking he may have reinstalled the OS but didn't bother adding the software back on. If you follow this next step, it should give us a lot of answers, It seems a lot.... but is really simple: Download OTL to your desktop. if you have problems, try this download link: OTL Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted. When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output. Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check . . http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/new/otlwithlogo.png Now copy the lines in the codebox below. netsvcs %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe /md5start eventlog.dll scecli.dll netlogon.dll cngaudit.dll sceclt.dll ntelogon.dll logevent.dll iaStor.sys nvstor.sys atapi.sys IdeChnDr.sys viasraid.sys AGP440.sys vaxscsi.sys nvatabus.sys viamraid.sys nvata.sys nvgts.sys iastorv.sys ViPrt.sys eNetHook.dll ahcix86.sys KR10N.sys nvstor32.sys ahcix86s.sys nvrd32.sys symmpi.sys adp3132.sys /md5stop %systemroot%\*. /mp /s %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles CREATERESTOREPOINT right click in the Custom Scans/Fixes window (under the blue bar) and choose Paste. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/new%20forum/scan-fix.png . Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long. When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL. Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them with your next reply. This may get confusing for you, so if you have any questions.... just ask. Thanks.
  20. Hi maynardvdm Quite possibly, i'm a visiting consultant there.
  21. Hi and welcome Twiceshy, Just remember that all of us were beginners at one time, so we know exactly what you mean. Never be afraid to ask a question..... you'll never know the answer unless you do ask. Have a good look around, some of your questions may have been answered already. Have fun.
  22. Hi A,Taylor IQon Technologies went into Liquidation on 22 jan 2008 (does not exist anymore?) But i did find this: This may help if you want to reinstall the OS. But don't forget, you may have to run Windows Updates to get all your updates back again.
  23. If you didn't receive an OS disc, it must be on a partition somewhere. What is the make and model of your system?
  24. Hi chippynut and welcome to ExtremeTech.support - Free PC Help very near to where i originally came from. Used to live near Rugby.
