Guest Sirius Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Hello Well Respected Microsoft MVPs. Did I post to the right group or should I try somewhere else? I just purchased a refurb. wireless PCMCIA card for my notebook. Netgear WN511b and Compaq Presario 1700 17XL265 Win2000 sp4. I followed instructions, installed newest drivers, put the card in when prompted. Got a strong signal and the status is "Connected to router" It should however say "connected to internet". Because of this webpages do not load. It works with a wire. The manual that I also downloaded says in the troubleshooting section is that this would be a network configuration problem, but then how come it works with a wire. I took off the firewall, same problem. I googled it and the best thing that came so far is this software called Network Magic. I have it installed and everything works. It's only a 7 day trial version, however. cost $60.00 to keep it. When I take it off the problem comes back. How did Network Magic fix the problem, I can't figure out. Netgear will not talk to me for free because it's a refrurb. I could only email them which I did and so far no response. Using WEP security 64 bit. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You'll do better to examine your configuration instead. Open a command window and pay attention to what directory it's in. "cd" if necessary to a non-system directory where you can write a file, then: ipconfig /all > results.txt route print >> results.txt The open the results.txt file and copy/paste the contents into your reply here. Also reply with the information as to whether the IP address is DHCP assigned or static. Most wireless access points can be configured to only allow access to DHCP assigned addresses from that access point, even though the connection will show as "established."

The fact that your machine uses an IP address of 169.254.91.15 indicates that it was unable to obtain an address from the DHCP server. This in turn suggests that you have a problem with your wireless connection. During testing, you should use a fixed IP address. Any address will do, provided that it is in the same subnet as your router's IP address and provided that it is not already in use. By the way, most of the respondents in these newsgroups are not MVPs. If you seek answers from everyone (and most of these answers are of excellent quality!) then it's best to change your initial address accordingly.
Guest Sirius Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Re: Wireless problem Sorry about the addressing. I did not know. Assigning a static IP address did not work. Also, when Network Magic is installed it does not assign an IP address either. Guest Sirius Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Re: Wireless problem What needs fixing in the wireless connection? The notebook is able to see the wireless network, and knows there is a WEP security and asks for the password. After that there is a connection with a good signal. And status says "Connected to Router". The router is also seeing the notebook. And everything worsk just fine with Network Magic. What does this software do that can not be done manualy? Thank you. Guest Pegasus \(MVP\) Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Re: Wireless problem Wireless connections are difficult to diagnose via a newsgroup because each card uses its own technique. You would need to find someone who has an identical adapter. I recently dealt with a case similar to yours. The wireless connection looked perfect, yet I was unable to ping the router. To make a connection, I was forced to switch off the wireless router and turn it back on again. Eventually it turned out that the wireless adapter had two separate IP addresses. Removing one solved the problem. I'm not saying your problem is caused by the same mechanism - this is just an illustration. I suggest you repost your question in a networking newsgroup and state the exact make & model of your adapter.
