Guest Richard Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Hello I have a Win 2000 server which is a Domain Controller. I might have to reinstall the OS and I need some advice on some issues to make some decisions. I understand that if I reinstall the OS and recreate users, the users id will be different from the current id. 1. How do I set it up that I will use the existing users Id? Can I save the active directory and copy to the newly created domain? 2. I am using raid 1. If I were to change both the hd, need I set up the mirror before I install or install first? If yes, is it difficult to set up? (One of the hd died on us, and could not find a similar hd replacement, advice was to upgrade both Hds) Many thanks in advance. Richard
Guest Meinolf Weber Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Re: Reinstalling Server 2000 Hello Richard, Easiest way is to use a second computer, add it to the domain as second Domain controller, make it DNS/GC server also DHCP if needed, move all 5 FSMO roles form the old one to the new, copy all needed data to the new DC. Then reconfigure the clients to use the new DC as preferred DNS server, disconnect the old one for testing that everything still works. When everything is running, reconnect the old DC and demote it. Do not just delete it from AD, it has to be demoted with dcpromo. Now you have still everything up and running and can rebuilt the old DC. Guest Richard Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Re: Reinstalling Server 2000 Hello Meinolf Is there another way to do it if I do not have another computer?
