Modem removed - unavailable device

I bought a Lenovo ThinkPad (R61i - UV1DSUK), that came with Vista and

a "downgrade" to XP Pro SP2. I ran the downgrade, which seemed to go

well. The first thing I did, having set it up, was to create a

dial-up connection but, in 'Properties' (General tab), instead of the

modem name it says: "Modem removed - unavailable device [COM1]", with

a red cross.

I've Googled this phrase and found other people with this problem, but

no ready answer. "Modems" doesn't appear in Device Manager and 'Phone

& Modem Options' won't autodetect the built-in modem. What can I do?

TIA,

I would imagine your missing the driver for your modem that matches XP.

The downgrade may not have installed it . look on the cd for drivers and

modem. and see if it will install manually

Two possibilities that come to mind. First, the driver for your modem is

missing in XP. The other possibility is that the modem is not seated

completely in the slot. I had that problem on a desktop.

As it happens I'm replying from an R61 with VIsta. I tried XP on it, and

went back to Vista and found it faster.

In any case, it's most likely that your downgrade is not entirely complete,

and you still have drivers to install. You need to get to the point

where you can see modems in Device Manager.

So go back to Lenovo Support and use the machine type code from the bottom

of the laptop to determine the correct set of drivers, and be sure you get

the underlying ones.
