I have a computer that I need to re-install windows 2000 on. However, there

are some things on the computer that I do not want to wipe out and back up is

not an option. Can I re-install Windows 2000 over the old installation like

you used to be able to do with Windows 98?

Yes, you can but you're running a serious risk of wiping your data.

Furthermore I cannot see how you can claim that a backup is not an option.

There are some low-cost but highly effective backup methods available - why

don't you use them?

I could answer your question in a different way. The fact that you're

enquiring here indicates that you're concerned about the potential loss of

your data files. Your statement "backup is not an option" suggests you're

not concerned about data loss. I can see some unresolved contradictions

here.

These may help though as Pegasus states there is no guarantee that you

wouldn't lose something nor is there any guarantee that your problem will be

fixed.
