System Unstable

A couple of weeks ago I post a message about my Vista 64 Bit OS starting to

not respond to any commands and having to force a reboot on a regular basis

ending in a format/reinstallation.

 

Someone suggested driver issues or imcompatable software.

 

I have ended up going back to XP 64 Bit and after a few days all sorts of

things started happenning, but the main thing was BSOD Stop c000021a fatal

system error.

Other issues started to rear it's ugly face RCP, SERVICES.EXE with shut down

in 30 secs or so.

Tried to do a last known configuration then recieved a BSOD 0x0000050

Win32k.sys and also a 0xc0000005 BSOD.

I have had the motherboard replaced incase that was the problem. I have

DrWatson capturing errors and so far all refer to explorer.exe / shell32,

browseui, msgina, with code c000005

 

I have also used msconfig/services to stop all non microsoft programs from

loading

Clayton:

With problems occurring on 2 different operating systems staying with

the basics would be the best approach. A good place to start would be

testing the ram using Memtest86 or Memtest86+. The power supply could be a

cause or common components.

If it happens on both Vista and XP it may be a hardware or heat issue.

 

I don't know if your machine is homebuilt or shop bought but I would:

 

Get it on a table where you can see it, I usually leave mine plugged in

but turned off at the mains so the case is earthed.

Use a soft brush to clean out any accumulated dust - particularly around

the fans and heat sinks and the PSU (be extra careful, the capacitors hold

a healthy charge for a long time), if you brush it all into the corner of

a case you can hoover it out (obviously you need to treat it gently,

pretend you're on a first date).

Check everything is seated properly and all cables (data and power) are

properly attached.

Keep an eye open for signs of burning/over heating on any components.

 

Put the side back on and re-boot.

Run memtest as Dennis suggested, the Prime95 torture test is also good for

giving things a good thrashing. Run the tests over night and then check

(a) for any errors and (b) the CPU temperature.

 

Have you added any hardware since the PC was bought/built - if so you may

be pushing your PSU.

Is the main board battery healthy (they have a life of about 5 years).

 

That ought to get you started on the route to diagnosis.

Hi,

It's a Dell Precision 390 about a year old now.

I've replaced the memory when I got it and graphics card, no problems since

then. however I added one of these drives and noticed problems after that

run tests on the drive and all ok.

 

I ran memtest last week, 10 passes I think and that was ok, all my sensor

temps CPU, HDD, GPU etc are around 30 degrees

The problems I was having with Vista 64 was not responding and XP 64 was

BSOD, would that be the same problems as I never got any stop errors with

Vista 64.

 

I'll run that Prime95 you suggested and another test on the memory overnight

and arrange for a PSU replacement.

Wow, faster than a speeding bullet!

 

Is there any way of running the PC with it disconnected just in case it's

causing problems? Bit difficult if your OS is on it :-)

That new HD of yours is very low power usage, I wouldn't have thought it

would tip the balance on the PSU unless Dell have really designed down to

a price.

 

I have a power meter that plugs into the mains socket then you plug an

appliance in it and it gives a reading of power usage. My home build (X48

board, Q9450, 2 x DVD, 3 x HD, 8 GB RAM and a 9600GT graphics card) uses

220 watts at tick-over and around 290 running Prime 95 flat out on 2 of

the cores. I fitted a 750 watt PSU to allow for expansion.

Adding the drive does two things - it increases the load on your PSU, and

increases the overall heat in the case. The heat may well be localized - if

the drive is mounted in a location that doesn't have good airflow, for

example, it could be the drive itself that's overheating. If it's just below

a critical component, it could be overheating that component, while the rest

of the case/board appears to still be cool.

Clayton - I have a two week old top-of-the-line HP multi-media system.

 

Just this morning I was simply doing a routine shut down. All applications

were closed. The OS froze. It took about 2 minutes for Task Manager to

open and when it did it indicated over 5.5BG of ram was being used and the

CPU usages was at 70%. That's a major issue. I look forward to this

happening at times in the future. I have a number of smaller issues with

the OS. It, just like all other versions of Windows, absolutely refuses to

remember window sizes and locations. I just leave every window I open all

stacked on the desktop. It's easier to sort and find the one I want from

there than to resize and position new ones. This one also refuses to

indicate an empty recycle bin when it is. I've done the 'properties |

Icons' routine so many times I just now pay no attention to the full icon.

 

I've gone from XP home to XP pro to Vista home to now Vista home premium 64.

Oh - - - how I long for the XP days again.

Been running a stable system for a few days after a clean install, then this

morning whil;e transferring files to another drive the system automatically

restarted and said Drive 0 not found, powered down the system and check the

cables on the drive 0 and looked ok then went into the BIOS and looked ok

there so I restarted and everything was ok, could this be the problem I am

having? HDD sensor shows no major heat increase, went into Event Viewer and

all I could see there was Event ID: 6008 The previous system shutdown at

(TIME) (DATE) was unexpected.

Strange!!

System became unstable again, wouldn't shut down or restart had to wait a

few mins before anything happened, then got a message on screen saying Logon

Process has failed to create the security option dialog Failure: Security

Options.

It did finally restart so I checked Event Viewer and I can see 2 issues.

 

1. Event ID: 14 The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because of an IO

failure on Volume C:

2. Event ID: 11 The device detected a controller error on

\Device\Ide\IdePort1

The original drive Jeff, I do have another drive here.

 

I did install Diskeeper Pro Premium 2008 over the weekend and notice issues

this morning, removed it and so far so good, but I shouldn't speak too soon.

Good News

 

I brought a brand new system and transferred the hard drive over and it did

it again, so I eventually ran hard drive diagnosis tests on it and came back

with a I/O error on sector 6159543. 1 min into the test.

 

I did run the Western Digital diagnosis a few weeks back and it came up as

ok hence the reason why I was reluctant to replace it.

The new drive should arrive tomorrow, so I'll see how it goes.
