Guest John John (MVP) Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Re: Stopping Startup Programs in MSCONFIG Oopps! Hit the send button by mistake, lets try this again: To stop these processes you need to disable other features or functions that use the processes. Ctfmon is indeed part of Office XP, it activates the Alternative User Input Text Input Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft Office Language Bar, to stop this process you have to stop some Office features and unregister some dll's, see here for more information: Frequently asked questions about Ctfmon.exe http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282599 Mobsync.exe is the Microsoft Mobile Synchronization Manager, you have to disable File Synchronization to stop this process, do the following: 1- Run "Synchronise" from the Start>Programmes>Accessories Menu. Select setup and uncheck the synchronisation options, then deselect the option to synchronise your home page. 2- In the Folder Options | Offline Files uncheck the "Enable Offline Files" and reboot the computer. Guest DaffyD® Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Stopping Startup Programs in MSCONFIG There are two program I unchecked in msconfig--ctfmon.exe and mobsync.exe. Ctfmon.exe is associated with Office XP and mobsync.exe starts MSN Messenger (thanks to John John, Messenger no longer starts with Outlook Express). I don't need these to startup with Windows but every time I've unchecked them they're checked again when I start Windows. They're not in my startup folder nor are they in Run in the registry I'm not sure what I else I need to do. Help please. -- DaffyD® If I Knew Where I Was I'd Be There Now.
Guest John John (MVP) Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Re: Stopping Startup Programs in MSCONFIG You would use the Regsvr32.exe command without the /u switch, example: Regsvr32.exe msimtf.dll But you wouldn't have to bother with that anyway. Anytime that you want to add or repair an Office XP feature or component and that stick the CD in the computer Ctfmon will automatically be reinstalled, usually one finds that Ctfmon needs to be disabled after adding Office components. If you were to simply use the Office CD and reinstall the Alternative User Input the dlls will automatically be reinstalled. Guest John John (MVP) Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Re: Stopping Startup Programs in MSCONFIG Yes, the Mobile Synchronization Manager handles the synchronization schedule, synchronization keeps your files and information up to date with shared files on your server. Offline Files makes your files available when you are not connected to your server. For example you might have a laptop that you connect to your server at work, when you enable Offline Files the files are available when you are disconnected from the server, this allows you to keep on working with your files. Lets say that you leave the office and bring your laptop with you, while you are disconnected from the server you can still access your files and work on your projects, when you connect the laptop back to the network your files will be synchronized, the files on the server will be updated to reflect the work that you did on the files while you were disconnected from the network.
