At times, no browsing

Normally my W2000/SP4 custom desktop runs fine. It was built with SP4

installed 3 years ago, no patches since then, daily browsing (DUN) with

Firefox and Xnews newsreader since then, never *had* problems until about

6 weeks ago.

I don't use MS software except for the OS, no commercial software,

usually small noinstall freeware utilities, has always been very

troublefree.

6 weeks ago, on daily cold boot, worked fine one day, installed nothing,

don't use registry cleaners, etc.

The next day, DUN was normal, Firefox opened normally, but it was not

browsing. I disabled the firewall, no help, I checked seveal things,

everything seemed normal. I changed nothing. I went to another XP

machine, works fine on same DUN connection. I ran several AV programs,

clean results.

The next day, browsing was normal. Normal for the next few weeks, one

day, I sent an email, 5 minutes later it stopped browsing.

I went back to a month-old registry, it started browsing again.

Today it is again not browsing. I'm writing this in another computer.

I have the rollup patch of about a year ago, waiting to install it after

I backup everything.

I just read an earlier post here that says W2K is very vulnerable, will

get infected in minutes unless patched, that is not my experience, SP4

helps with some issues, I'm sure. Careful browsing makes a lot of

difference also.

The way my machine normally works, there is nothing basic wrong, it

worked years OK.

Is there a missing patch that would account for this strange situation,

or what?

When Firefox stops browsing can IE still browse? Is there anything

logged in the Event Log when this happens? Is the DHCP Client service

running?

also ipconfig /? to see other options

I will try to respond one step at a time, and your post was first.

I tried browsing with Firefox, no luck, closed it.

I then ran IE, pasted in a link (I have no favorites setup in IE), it

could not browse, closed it.

I looked in Windows Task Manager, do not see DHCP Client service

as a running process.

Re: At times, no browsing

Go in the Services Management Console and start the DHCP Client service.

You may want to set the start type for this service to "Automatic" and

reboot the computer. To open the Services Management Console enter

Services.msc in the Start Menu Run box.

It might help if you post the content of the most recent Event IDs 7000

& 7001. To open the Event Viewer enter Eventvwr or eventvwr.msc in

the Start Menu Run box. Double click on the error events then click on

the little clipboard/paper pages icon to copy the event then paste it to

your next reply. The format of the error message will look like this:

Event ID: 1704

Description:

Security policy in the Group policy objects are applied successfully.

I also notice that Events 20158 and 20159 are happening within seconds

or minutes of each other, Event 20158 indicates that a Remote Connection

was made and Event 20159 indicates that the connection was terminated,

you may want to further investigate what is happening with this.

I take it that copper.net is your ISP and that COM3 is your modem port.

The above are not in chronological order. Make sure that the Event

Log is sorted by date and check that Events 20159 are not happening

almost immediately after Events 20158, that would indicate that your

connection is being dropped almost as soon as it is made.

I'm not sure what the HWiNFO32 Kernel Driver is, you would have to

search the internet to find out more about it, but that error dates from

September 25th, it may just be an old one time only error. It might

help if you clean out the log and work with a clean list of recent and

current events. To clear the log right-click on System Log and select

"Clear all Events", there is no need to save to log before you clear it.

Reboot your computer and try connecting to the internet and then take

a look at your log to see what is going on.

It's in the System32 folder, just launch it from the Run box or

right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage", or look in the Start

Menu>Programs>Administartive Tools.

Look at the columns at the top. If you don't see the "Event" Column

works OK.

Sorry, I forgot the other address- my ISP, but when connected, the DUN

tooltip figures all look normal. Symptoms so far are I can connect to my

ISP normally, can't go on internet. I am typing on a W98 machine using

same ISP.

I tried the commandline ping, not familiar with this method so no luck.

The data was with a GUI utility that copied to clipboard, works well.

I used to run several big complex install type AV programs, gave up on

them, now run a few small AV/malware scanners, never show anything.

Is your firewall properly configured?

I have used Kerio on various machines for years, here it browsed Ok for

several years, when I stoppped browsing, first thing to check- disabled

the firewall, no help, but it is properly configured.

I think this says I can ping my ISP, can't ping a web address.

Better mention, I have used Firefox from the Netscape days, the current

version I use is 2.0.0.17 for the past 2 weeks, before it was 2.0.0.16

that browsed for about a year OK, then the problem several months ago,

revert to old registry solved that for awhile, a few days ago it came

back. AFAIK, it's not a browser issue.

That means that your Windows 98 box is properly configured and that your

ISP's service is running fine, it doesn't tell us much of anything about

your Windows 2000 browsing problems.

So far, based on the ping results you gave us above it appears that

you're not resoving DNS addresses, but without knowing if you can ping

by IP address we cannot be sure. Connect to the internet and then at

the Command Prompt issue the NSLOOKUP command and see if if you can

get the DNS server name and address.

Your GUI ping utility is probaby working fine but not knowing what this

utility is or if it is even designed for the NT line of operating

systems it would be helpful if you could confirm the ping results with

the native Windows 2000 ping utility. In the Start Menu run box enter

CMD then click on OK. At the Command Prompt enter the following commands:

ping 64.233.161.18

and then:

ping -a 64.233.161.18

You can send the results of the ping command to a text file if you want,

enter the following command:

ping -a 64.233.161.18 >c:\pingtest.txt

No it doesn't. There will never be any such thing as an instantaneous

response; the best response time you'll get will be fractions of a

millisecond. Did you edit what you posted to change it from "time<10ms"?

Beside, that is NOT your ISP. Open the command window and type at the

prompt:

Make sure your DUN (Dial-Up-Networking) interface is using DHCP-assigned IP

address and name servers (right-click on the DUN definition in "Network and

Dial-up Connections" -> Properties -> Networking tab -> Internet Protocol

(TCP/IP) -> Properties, then choose BOTH automatic entries, save eberything

on your way out), then re-connect. If you still have connectivity problems,

go back to the basics in the command window. Copy and paste the entire

results of these 2 commands in your reply, please:

ipconfig /all

and

route print

In case copying from a command window is unfamiliar to you, just highlight

the text to copy with the pointer device, release the pointer and then press

the Enter key, then you can paste into your reply to this post.

Get Ff 3.x which has been available for some months now, most recent update

was last week or so. Using old software is begging for problems; there's a

good reason why new stuff is freely available. All your bookmarks etc. will

be retained.

BTW, also check your FF Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network tab ->

Settings button and make sure everything is as it should be wrt proxy usage.

Good news- your earlier lookup command, my ISP text file did not have

that kind of data for my ISP so I called them. The address was wrong-

they had changed awhile ago, so I stopped browsing- wonderful! They send

a monthly billing email, could have notified people.

They had me, in Internet Settings, change from a listed wrong address to

"find DNS automatically". That did it!

A few minor questions:

My other XP and W98 machines work OK, so I guess I have to check as above

in each of them, they must be set to "find DNS automatically", or they

would have stopped browsing, as all my computers have the same DUN

settings.

Where is the normal log file that keeps track of events in W2K? I just

looked in C: and don't see it.

I use W98SE on several machines (old software), never had real problems

that I see on the ng's, my W2K (old software) works fine with minimal

patches, careful browsing works for me. I use lots of freeware utilities

and in frequent cases, the next version has problems.

With Firefox, when they went to 3, they stopped using the bookmark

system, so I will plan to use 2.X for a long time in the future. Even

today, in a W98 machine, I went back from 2.0.0.17 to 2.0.0.15 as some

new features didn't work as well as the older version.

My general comment would be- try a newer version cautiously, but save the

older version just in case.

If the XP & W9x machines are working fine then they are probably already

set to automatically find the DNS server, nowadays almost all ISPs have

their clients use automatic settings obtain IP & DNS addresses.

They're .evt files in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Config folder.

(%SystemRoot% is a variable for the system folder, WINNT on Windows

2000, or the same thing as %Windir%). You can't really read these files

without special tools, use the Event Viewer to view the logs.

A search does turn up a number of (Firefox) bookmarks.html files but I

believe these are all left over from Firefox 2. I can't find anything

from FF3. Bookmark dropdowns etc *are* present as normal in the GUI

though and behave the same way and you can export them as an html file

if need be.

By "bookmark utilities" I assume you mean 3rd party Firefox add-ons. If

so, this is not a problem confined to bookmark utilities. The system of

user-generated add-ons sounds fine in theory but in my experience

whenever FF is updated (whether it be a version change or an

intermediate update), several of the add-on's fail. And being user

developed on an ad-hoc basis, there is no guarantee when (or if) these

utilities will ever be updated. Right now, I have more "broken" add-ons

than good ones. And given that FF seems to get updates even more

frequently than IE, I don't normally bother with the add-ons any more

they're just too much trouble.

My comment was from people that, like me, use separate utilities- Moz

Backup for backing up Fx bookmark files, etc. I use extensions, they

behave as you describe in new versions, I only use PrefBar.

It appears there's a way to work with FX 3, but I have no reason to

upgrade. In over 10 years, I've never seen a internet threat due to my

"outdated" software. I keep the same browsing patterns.

Are you sure your bookmarks.html file is associated with FF3 and not a

left-over from FF2? (I'm talking about a real bookmarks file in the

Documents and Settings tree not the short file in the Firefox\defaults tree)
