The above was on my computer this morning and I don't want it. I did not ask for it and is just another nail in the coffin of windows when it is due for an update. Am I in the right place to get rid of this?

Right clicking does not allow the delete option.

Control panel does not show it in the programs for removal.

But it is still there as I just saw it available when I went to use irfanview.

Hi Jim,

I don't want it. I did not ask for it

It can just appear randomly, even if you don't use it.

It won't show.... it's a Windows feature.

Right clicking does not allow the delete option.

You found that you can't remove it like that then :)

Let's try the easy way first...

Right click on the desktop and click REFRESH on the menu that comes up.

It should be as simple as that.

This may help if you decide to disable the Home Group feature... it will also explain what it's for:

How to Disable “HomeGroup” Feature in Windows 7?

Thanks for coming back to me starbuck, kind of you. I have tried the site you mentioned above and it told me there was no homegroup to disable. But I know it is in there.

I think I'd better get up to speed with another OS if this is what they are up to.

Hi Jim,

it told me there was no homegroup to disable

Which means it hasn't been set up then.

But as I said before... the icon can randomly appear even if the HomeGroup is not set.

Did clicking the 'Refresh' remove the icon from the Desktop?

It had gone from the desk top before that. However it is still somewhere in the system as I now see it in some of the things I do. I do not remember them but Homegroup grates against the grain with me. If I cannot get rid of it I will be obliged to change my OS.

I don't really understand this Jim, where exactly is the word or words Homegroup appearing?

It should normally show in any explorer window on the left hand side as in this screen shot.

As Starbuck said, it is an integrated part of Windows since Windows Vista and is definitely required if connecting two or more computers to a network when all computers are Windows Vista, W7, W8 or when it is released Windows 10. The older "Network" will still apply and is used if a Windows XP machine is connected to the network, however the ordinary network is slow, if all computers are running in a homegroup the connection is much faster.

Once another Windows Vista or above is connected, you then just click on the "Homegroup" to then navigate round to the other computers within the group, to either access or copy over files and documents etc.

It only appeared on my desktop when I posted above. There are two computers on this router SWMBO's and mine and it has nevr showed before and I have had this router about eighteen months there-abouts. So I wonder why now? Is it me? Have I done something?

Hi Jim, can you show us a screen shot of when and where it appears please, as I am puzzled about what you mean! I have a desktop and laptop connected myself yet not ever seen it appear except where I showed in my screen shot.

It has not re-appeared since - dang thing.

I assume it's windows advertising itself - very annoying. I will look for other systems though.

They say a change is as good as a rest.

If it hasn't reappeared, then changing your OS seems a very radical measure!

If you upgrade to 8.1 you'll most likely meet with further frustrations such as not being easily able to find things but at least Microsoft have committed to allowing us to upgrade free to Windows 10 following its release later this year. Hopefully, they'll have listened to users and simplified things.
