Hello all..first post here so please be gentle....:)

My current OS is XP Home Edition and i was given a copy of XP Awesome to try out. During installation i didn't delete any partition and just installed it alongside the home edition.

On boot up i get the option to go to either XP Awesome or my original Home OS.

Ican access both but i now want to remove the Awesome files and stay with my original Home edition. I have been searching all day for ways to remove it and can't find nothing. Could anyone point me in the right direction....?

Regards

Jason

This is what happens when you install trash Jason.

Right click My Computer and choose Properties.

Click the Advanced tab and choose Startup and Recovery, click Settings.

Click the Edit button in System Startup and copy and paste what it says back here.

It will delete it from startup but has this trash been added to Add/Remove?

Have a look.

I don't know how much of that trash, which is basically XP hacked, is co-existing alongside the proper OS.

If it were me then I would reinstall XP.

The only reason I have not closed this thread entirely Jason is to make people aware who view this just what can happen when a person installs rubbish.

I agree...

I could kick myself, but this is what happens when we give into temptation..:(

I wanted to jazz the desktop up a bit and to be honest i generally shy away from programs like this..

Correction..I am kicking myself....

I'm also going to ask you to run certain scans on your pc which will enable you to ascertain if you have any malware present.

Malware is the term used to describe computer infections such as Adware, Spyware, Viruses, and Trojan Horses.

You will need to run at least two malware scanners as well as an Antivirus scanner that are listed in the following instructions.

Anti-Malware and Anti-Virus scanners perform different tasks.

The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something.

The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection.

Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 30 and 90 minutes.

The Eset online scan should take between 1 and 3 hours.

In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer.

For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page

To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below.

From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range"

click the Selection choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Follow these instructions carefully.
  • Download ATF-Cleaner from Snapfiles.com to remove "junk" files from your computer that may contain malware.
  • You can also download it from Majorgeeks.com
  • When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main.
  • For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox
  • NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored
  • Then click on "Empty Selected".

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware!
    • Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files.
    • You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next.
    • You can leave the automated check for updates on.
    • You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information.
    • DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings.
    • On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button.
    • Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives.
    • Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" and reboot the computer when prompted to do so.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Disable your internet security by right clicking on its icon (usually located in the system tray next to the time display) and choosing "Exit", "Disable", or "Shut Down".
  • Run an online scan with Eset from Free Virus Scan: Use ESET's Online Antivirus Scanner
  • You must use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan.
  • Accept the terms and click "Start".
  • Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications".
  • Click "Start" to begin the scan.
  • When completed restart your computer

Make sure your internet security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating.

At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted.

I removed over 4500 instances of malware today from my daughters pc.

Guess what Anti-Virus software she was running.

Is that a trick question.....:D:D

I am in the process of purchasing ESET NOD32, seems to be one of the better ones out there

NOD32 is what I run Jason.

In my personal opinion Mcafee is about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.

Your welcome Jason, get back to us with your thoughts on NOD if you will please.

I'd also suggest running those scans for your own personal benefit too.

Had NOD on the system since last night and so far i am impressed. It does not consume the resourses that my previous 2 Anti-Viruses software did, making it a lot quicker on start up.

The interface is really easy to use and from what i can see the spam filter lets you choose before making its own mind up...

So far i have to say i'm impressed

(ps..after a scan, nothing was found unwanting on my pc so i am also happy with that )

Jason,

I own a large computer repair shop. We are constantly disinfecting computers that run Mcafee, AVG, and Norton. We don't often come across a system that is running NOD32, but when we do, it is not for disinfection.

If you come across a magazine or web site that claim one of the "big three" is the "best", then ignore it. It's just capitalistic propaganda, as the big three own all of that media.

It's analogous to Chrysler, GM, and Ford. Despite those big three, Toyota and Honda make much better vehicles.

BTW-I've owned North American vehicles up to 2003. That's when I bought a Honda Civic. Given my experience with that car, I will never again purchase anything from the big three.

"Internet security" is by far, the greatest consumer scam of all time.

Hi Seth...

I think they also monopolise the market due to their associations with the major PC suppliers, and lets face it majority of the pc user networks skills are below par, those with a bit of know how are in the vast minority....

So most people will believe what these major stores tell them..

As for Honda....

I couldn't agree more...:D
