Guest XS11E Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 HP says my Compaq Presario V5306US is Vista compatible and on their website they give detailed directions to upgrade to Vista, offering a BIOS upgrader, Vista compatibility checker, etc. all in one download: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3245653&lang=en&docname=c00678123 All went well, I installed Vista Home Premium 64 and found HP provided no drivers for the modem or sound card. Pretty useless to have a machine for travelling w/o a working modem... I emailed them and their reply in part: "I regret to inform that, as HP has not yet started bundling Windows Vista 64 bit operating system or any upgrades for it, therefore, HP cannot provide any drivers or technical support on upgrading to Windows Vista 64 Bit operating system. However, depending on the requests that we are receiving from our customers, HP may as well release the 64 Bit drivers. As soon as the drivers are released, you will be notified through email. Also, I request you to keep checking the HP support and drivers page of your Notebook for the same." Result, my notebook is back to XP, Vista is gone from my desktop and my plans to convert to Vista 64 only are dead for now. Adios, just sign me: XS11E, a 32 bit Windows XP only kind of guy for who knows how long.... -- XS11E, Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://blinkynet.net/comp/uip5.html

I've already done all the obvious but thanks anyway... Also checked PlanetAMD64.com, Start64.com, etc. etc. There are no drivers that I can find and I guess there won't be until HP decides they're needed and that will be who knows when? I'm guessing never, I noticed they DO have 64 bit modem and sound drivers for later laptops but they seem to be using different modems and sound cards (I tried them, of course, no go!) and that makes me believe the drivers for my laptop will never be written. OBTW, no NIC driver, either. -- XS11E, Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://blinkynet.net/comp/uip5.html
Guest Dominic Payer Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Re: 64 bit Laptop? The service manual http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00700903.pdf for your V5306US says the NIC is a Realtek 8139 family - page 6-10. If you loaded the generic 6.104 Vista drivers for that from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=6&PFid=6&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false you might well find that Windows Update will provide drivers for the sound and modem. It's worth a try but I suspect the driver is for the NIC only? We shall see.... -- XS11E, Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://blinkynet.net/comp/uip5.html
