That I have to disagree on because according to your rule there, I should

not be using Ubuntu right now. Now, I don't want to advertise any OS with

this post, that is not my intention. All I am trying to say is, no matter

how long you've used one OS does not mean you can't switch to another.

I've been a programmer for several years now developing exclusively for

windows. I still develop for windows. I no longer do it *from* windows

though...For the most part, the only use I have left for windows is to

play games on it.

So I have to disagree, no matter how seasoned you are in one thing, you

can always switch to another if you are open minded enough and willing to

learn something new.

And how precisely do you know this? Where exactly do you get your numbers

from? Personally, I find the volume of posts related to activation issues

in this NG appalling. While it is not representative of the total volume

of problems, it is enough of an indicator that there is a problem. XP

doesn't have such a volume of posts regarding activation issues and far

more people are using it. I don't need to know exact numbers to at the

very least know that it is a far greater problem under Vista than XP.

Which is why Windows is no longer a viable primary operating system for

me. I can't depend on an operating system I am only leasing where its

manufacturer can decide at any given point in time if I'm allowed to use

it or not. No thanks...

And what does that have to do with Vista? It said Windows installs, not

Vista Installs. We all know that Windows dominates the market, so what

exactly is new about this?

>

So a company is offering the lower end clusters running windows. I can

actually see that make sense. If you have a company dependent mostly on

Windows and need a small cluster and MS offers one that meets the

needs...why not go for it? I personally don't have a problem with it.

I'm not Alias frank. I honestly don't give a rats ass what OS other people

use. I don't mind MS doing well either. I just simply don't think their

latest product suits most my needs anymore. If other people think

otherwise, that's their right and I have no problem with it.

I've said it before, and I say it again. Both operating systems have their

uses and I'm a fanboy of neither. I run a mix of both operating systems

using each for its own purpose. Windows just is the one I use the least as

I have the least need for it.

I have replaced eight windows installations with PCLINUXOS in just the

month of July. Customers are happy.

I replaced Vista with XP just today. The customer called me and was

totally fed up with Vista. He had purchased the upgrade when it first

became available. I used his original XP disks to make the change.

Vista was not ready for prime time. He was relieved to get back his

error free desktop and all of his programs worked. The best thing that

you can do with Vista is nuke it and replace it with a decent operating

system whether XP or Linux.

To paraphrase Samuel Johnson:

"A computer running Ubuntu is like a dog raised up on its hinder legs. It is

not surprising that it does it poorly; what is surprising is that it would

want to do so at all."

The activity, however, does provide some merriment to those entertained by

dogs scampering about on their back legs, wearing pink tutus and little

pointy hats. Some folks are just easily amused.

There's a learning curve from XP to Vista. There's also a learning curve

for XP to Ubuntu. I've been using Ubuntu for about 8 months and it isn't

all that different from Windows except, of course, no WPA, no WGA, no

DRM, not virus prone, not malware prone and everything is updated on

your computer so you don't have to look for things all over the Net.

I've also learned that it is much easier to install Ubuntu than Windows.

In addition, it took me less than a half an hour to set up and learn

Beryl and it really is cool.

AND, unlike MS ngs, I found the good folks on the Ubuntu boards to

really know what they're doing and provide a lot more support than

"Google it" or "Call India; it's only a few minutes of your time".
