New XP64 installation hangs after/at acpitabl.dat

I'm installing a relatively old copy of XP64 (June 2006) for dual boot on a

new (Sony VGN-FZ180E/B) laptop. The OS doesn't have a fraction of the drivers

needed for all of the new hardware, but I figured I could at least get it

installed and booting and work on drivers one peice of hardware at a time. I

thought that my only signifcant issue was going to be the absence of SATA

drivers - especially since I can't load them from a floppy. But I was able to

slipstream the appropriate driver and script updates so that XP successfully

completed all text and gui portions of the installation - but it won't boot.

Normal installation flashes a VERY brief blue screen after the splash screen

and reboots the machine. Booting Safe Mode with Command Prompt does the same

shortly after reaching acpitable.dat. I really can't read any of the text

because it goes by so fast.

The original Vista partition boots perfectly, so I can and have searched the

XP partition extensively for log files, etc. which might contain any boot

information, but nothing is being updated.

If anyone could point me at one or more known soutions to possible problems

I'd really appreciate it. Additionally, if someone could help me figure out

how to get logging information to track down the culprit or culprits I'd

really appreciate that as well.

Thanks...

I discovered the F8 trick for no reboot on error. It's a 0x00000078 error.

I'll look around for info on that - but any advice anyone can offer in the

meantime would be appreciated!

That's a disk error, can't find boot drive. Means you need a proper driver

for your HD.

Disconnect any hardware you don't need for installation. Have you allowed

enough disk space for the install? There may not be enough for the paging

and hibernation files on first boot.

Re: New XP64 installation hangs after/at acpitabl.dat

Yes it is a hard drive error. Any ideas?

Actually, I mistakenly typed ...78 instead of ...7B. It's definitely a 7B

error.

My laptop has an Intel 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller. According to Intel:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=2115&DwnldID=13494&lang=eng

....this link contains the driver I need for Windows XP64. In fact, the

install program wouldn't recognize the presence of a hard drive at all until

I slipstreamed the Intel drivers into the distribution. Then the install

program recognized my hard drive, went straight through the installation

successfully, then refused to boot as described earlier. Is it poosible that

the wrong drivers could work correctly for the installation then fail to boot

the OS? Is there a different driver for the hard drive? I've never heard of

that, but I'm confused again about the hard drive working for install but not

to boot the installation itself. Is it anything like having inappropriate

drivers for a video card but still being able to boot in VGA mode?

Any ideas or info on a replacement driver would be really appreciated.

Tbanks!

Re: New XP64 installation hangs after/at acpitabl.dat

It's a laptop, so I don't actually have any removable hardware. Well, I can

shut off my internal wireless. I'll give that a try.

The partition is brand new and newly formatted during installation: 52 GB

total with 50 GB now free after installation. The original Vista is on C: and

XP is now on D:. Is it possible that XP is trying to write the paging and

hibernation files to the wrong partition and developing an error? If it's

possible, does anyone know where that is defined and where I can check it?

(Remember, I can't use regedit, etc.)

Thanks,

Merrick

Got it! See "USB floppy during installation" thread...

Thanks all.

kupoknight,

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. Please see "USB floppy during installation"

thread where the solution is explained.

Good luck!
