USB floppy during installation

Recommended Posts

Posted

I was able to (apparently) successfully slipstream drivers for my Intel

82801HEM/HBM controller into an XP64 CD so that it completed both the text

and gui portion of setup, but it won't boot the operating system, resulting

in an 0x0000007B hard drive error. I can't seem to work the problem out.

I had to slipstream the drivers because I have a laptop and there is no

floppy drive, so the F6 driver route wasn't available. So I'm left guessing

if I modified the setup scripts correctly and included all of the divers,

etc. that I need.

Actually, i do have a USB floppy, but that apparently isn't available during

nstallation so that it isn't recognized as a drive. Is it possible to get the

appropriate USB and floppy drivers loaded into setup before reaching the

floppy request so that setup can read the floppy and handle all of the

detaiils?

thanks.

Re: USB floppy during installation

To the best of my knowledge, you should be able to sliptstream those

drivers, but I haven't tried it myself.

The USB Floppy should also be available during installation, but you will

probably have to actually disable any Floppy settings in your BIOS as there

is nothing connected to that connector. This worked fine for me, but

Motherboards and BIOS's vary.

Good Luck!

Re: USB floppy during installation

Since you got thru the GUI section of the install, your HD drivers seem to

be okay. You also were able to load a number of drivers from the hard drive

before you got your acpitabl.dat . There are numerous hits in the

knowledgebase for the 7B error message, you might look thru them and see if

any seem to fit your circumstances.

Re: USB floppy during installation

Brilliant!! Thanks a bunch. I had to enable external boot devices (go figure)

in the BIOS and it worked like a charm. I ran a repair installation and

everything boots like a charm.

My only remaining issue is that I can't seem to track down my audio/modem

drivers. I don't really care about the modem, but the audio would be nice! It

appears to be a Conexant HDAudio Softv92 Data Fax Modem with SmartCP. I have

one potential driver, but it doesn't appear to work. Any ideas?

Thanks again!

Re: USB floppy during installation

Great!

I've found it invaluable to get aquainted with my BIOS. The personality in

the machine comes from the BIOS. The BIOS IS the machine! It will reward

you, doing that. Further, today, I don't contemplate buying a new machine,

or upgrade the motherboard without downloading and reading the contents of

the manual, doing that fends off a lot of nasty surprises!

This is also why I usually don't buy brand-name machines, there are things

in those BIOS's that you don't know about, things that are meant to keep the

machine in a bond with the brand in all eternity. I am dual and

multi-booting most of my machines and the brands have a way of being a bit

too personal for my liking!

Hi again, Tony,

Tha nks for pointing that out. I've been there. The best-guess driver was

HSFhda_WinXP64.zip - no dice. It's DEFINITELY not AC '97, but it doesn't

matter because the link is broken. PCI is a slim possibility, but that links

broken as well.

Thanks for trying...

Have you tried Windows update/custom (I think) and look to see if any

drivers are available to download?

Sure. Immediately after installing XP64 and SP2 I had to download all the

patches and updates.

Thanks for checking, though!

Re: USB floppy during installation

Two broken links?

I got curious, and just downloaded 1.691 KB's worth of it, it's a ZIP

archive file, I unzipped it and had a look at the INF file and everything

looked normal. It has a Setup.exe plus a Setup64.exe inside

Note! - the text-part of taht link isn't the link at all. You'll have to

click the Anvil Icon. If you're using a download manager those doesn't

allways understand the redirection codes some sites are employing, so switch

over to IE or download by right-clicking the anvil.

Re: USB floppy during installation

While I was there, I had a look at the release notes, and I learned a few

things that I wasn't aware of - Connexant's driver is a chipset driver

handling the fax and network/telephony part, and that this is released with

Windows, so what John said back there is probably well founded (it usually

is). This means that you should check the manufacturer of that modem because

I don't expect the Connexant driver to have the Sound support you want.

Also, as a possible resolution, I would remove the modem from the machine

and reboot a couple of times, then reinsert it and when rebooting again

Windows should handle the requirements.

The acid test is if the modem manufacturer actually issued any 64bit support

for the sound. If they do, then now is the time to install that. What Brand

name is it sold under?

Re: USB floppy during installation

Not a good sign. If you checked the section that has the optional updates

and drivers, Microsoft has written their own drivers for Vista64 for the HD

sound while Realtek was late on the scene, but they at least have them now.

You might look thru the MSDN site as there are several articles and this

indicates that they have 64-bit drivers, so maybe Microsoft has one which

will work with XP.

Re: USB floppy during installation

If you're looking for drivers for 32-bit Windows, you're in

the wrong forum. This forum is for 64-bit Windows, but you

need to get hardware drivers from the manufacturer and/or

vendor. This is not the source for drivers.

Re: USB floppy during installation

Go to the web site of the manufacturer/vendor and download

the drivers.

Use Google if need be to find the web sites you need to visit.

Re: USB floppy during installation

Hi I really need your help on this. I also have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ180e.

Im also trying to install Windows XP and I am now in the phase where I

install the drivers. I tried going to the manufacturers sites and download

drivers but failed to find compatible ones.

I was wondering what drivers did you install to make your Video, audio and

the keyboard FN keys to work. I really need these drivers.

Thanks So Much you'll be my life saver.

Re: USB floppy during installation

Bobby,

You are talking about XP64, right?

Video:

Downloaded the latest NVidia

driver:http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

then modified the INF file to include 8400M GT. Search laptopvideo2go.com if

you don't know how to do this.

Audio:

No success yet. I'll let you know if it happens.

FN keys:

Sort of out of luck on this as well. There is a Sony Hotkeys utility that

must be run for the function keys to work. I ran this in Vista Ultimate

64-bit and all it gave me was the speaker on/off key. Since the audio isn't

working in XP64 I didn't even bother trying to run the hotkey utility. Go to

the sony support chat and request it if you can't find it otherwise. I'll run

the utility in XP64 and report back if I have any success.

You're probably not interested, but Vista 64-bit went pretty well. The only

issues are pretty much the hot keys and I also couldn't get the memory card

and sony memory stick working. Do you have any success with those?
