32-bit version of IE 6.0

Does anyone know how I can get the 32-bit version of IE to run with the 64

bit. I have a huge problem with Adobe Acrobat running a 32-bit activeX on

the new machines that came with the 64 bit processor? Supposedly the

machines were suppose to come bundled but they did not. Here is what I found

on the adobe website so you will understand my issue in greater detail.

-- Cannot open PDF within Internet Explorer 64-bit version

Internet Explorer 64-bit and 32-bit versions are both bundled with Windows

XP 64-bit and Windows Server 2003 x64 systems. Adobe Acrobat 7.0 and Acrobat

3D can open PDF files inside the browser window only if you use the 32-bit

version of Internet Explorer. Acrobat installs a 32-bit ActiveX control

(pdf.ocx) that enables Acrobat to open PDF files within Internet Explorer;

the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer 6 does not support 32-bit ActiveX

controls.

If the browser is Internet Explorer 64-bit, then PDF files open in the

stand-alone Acrobat application, not inside the browser window.

To open PDF files in the browser window, use the 32-bit version of Internet

Explorer 6.

To use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer from the Start menu:

1. Select Start.

2. Select Programs.

3. Select Internet Explorer (32-Bit).

To use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer from the Run window:

1. Select Start.

2. Select Run.

3. Type the following line, where C is the drive letter on which Internet

Explorer is installed: C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe

4. Click OK.

Re: 32-bit version of IE 6.0

Hi, Donna.

I haven't booted into WinXP (either 64-bit or 32-bit) in several months.

But, as I recall, WinXP x64 always booted the 32-bit browser by default. To

run the 64-bit browser, I had to specifically locate it and Run it. So you

may be running 32-bit IE already. In IE, click Help | About Internet

Explorer. If the top line of text doesn't include "64-bit Edition", then

you are running the 32-bit edition. And, yes, you can have both versions

open at the same time.

WinXP x64 introduced the new "Program Files (x86)" folder, in addition to

"Program Files". Actually, Microsoft did it backwards, which simply invites

confusion - especially for those of us who dual-boot. :>(

Rather than create a new "Program Files (x64)" to hold our 64-bit

applications, MS decided to put THOSE into the familiar Program Files. And,

when we install 32-bit programs in 64-bit Windows, those are supposed to go

into Program Files (x86). And there (Program Files (x86)) is where you'll

find the 32-bit version of Iexplore.exe. The 64-bit version of IE is in

Program Files.

Even if it is not the default on your machine, it's easy enough to Run the

x86 version by clicking on it, or by creating a shortcut, or by pinning it

to the Start menu. You could just create a shortcut with that final line

from your post:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe

With a little more effort, you could create a shortcut to open your PDF file

in IE6 (x86).

Do you run the full Acrobat program, or just the free Reader? Version 8.x

of Adobe Reader is available and runs fine in Vista x64, so my guess is that

it would run in WinXP x64, too. With that, you might not need to open PDF

files in IE at all.

Re: 32-bit version of IE 6.0

It sounds like someone has been "tweaking" your system. The

32-bit I.E. 32-bit is the default when the system is

installed and I have no problems with Adobe opening from

I.E. 32-bit on my system.

Someone has to actually make some alterations to the Win x64

system for the 64-bit I.E. to open as the default, and then

you're correct - ActiveX don't work!

Re: 32-bit version of IE 6.0

Except that links from OE open the 64-bit version. Very annoying.
