Recommended Tv Tuner for Vista 64 bit?

I'm looking to change/upgrade my older TV tuner from WinXP MCE 2005 to

something that is supported by Vista 64 bit Media Center.

 

Any suggestions from users out there who have managed to install a TV tuner

in 64 bit would be greatly appreciated.

I've been experimenting with doing that. I've gotten my

Hauppauge HVR-1600 to work (somewhat) by using the Hauppauge

drivers with the SnapStream recording software. To do this, I've

had to disable the MCE TV-related services in Ultimate x64. Not

elegant but better than nothing.

 

That said, it's not so good as operating that hardware/software

combination on an XP Pro platform.

 

Hauppauge also has a variant of the 1600 that is supposed to

operate using Vista's MCE. I don't know if it's been out long

enough for people to have had significant experience with it.

 

Me? At this point I'm leery on investing any money on new TV

stuff until some other slob tries it first.

If you want an analogue card, it must have hardware mpeg to work with Vista

Media Center. In practice this means one of the PVR cards.

Well, I did not have good luck with a Hauppauge PVR card. First had to send

it back for hardware fix because it wouldn't work with PCI-x slots. Then, it

came back with damage, so resent. But, now every time I have tried it in

Vista 64 Media Center it completely freezes my system. Hauppauge comments

that they have never had anyone test their driver with Vista 64 and a PCI-x

and then they blamed Microsoft saying that Vista 64 does not handle more

than 4 GBs of RAM correctly (I have 8 GBs) and that Microsoft is aware of

this. I would really like some way to capture analog and other types of

video.

There are suggestions that other non-WHQL drivers - USB hubs are often

mentioned - are conflicting with the Hauppauge drivers. Changing the memory

remapping in the BIOS is said to have solved the problem for some.

 

Have you tried the card with the Hauppauge WinTV software? I have a Leadtek

DVB-T card and found Vista Media Center abysmally slow and cumbersome

compared with the Leadtek software. I have seen reports that a major update

to Vista Media Center is in preparation.

The Hauppauge WinTV software is not compatible with Vista 64-bit. This TV

Tuner/Media Center problem is actually the only problem with my entire Vista

64 setup (all else is running fine). I keep hoping for some company to

develop something that works.

Recommendations? No. Suggestions? No. Experiences? Read on...

 

For a few years, I watched TV on my computer with WinXP and ATI's AIW cards,

up through the AIW 9600 about 3 years ago. Then WinXP x64 arrived - and

I've not been happy with TV on my computer since. :>(

 

First, ATI never produced 64-bit drivers for the AIW - or for either 32-bit

or 64-bit Vista. Well, their DRIVERS work, but not the "capture drivers" or

whatever is the proper name for the TV portion of the cards. (I'm an

accountant, not a techie.) In other words, all the graphics functions

worked fine with all 4 versions: WinXP x86, WinXP x64, Vista x86 and Vista

x64. But the TV portion worked ONLY on WinXP x86.

 

After rebuilding my system for Vista Ultimate x64 RTM last December, I had

to replace the AIW 9600 because my new mobo had only PCI and PCI-express

slots, no AGP. I got another ATI graphics card, the Radeon X1600 Pro

PCI-Express. It works well with both x86 and x64 versions of Vista - but no

TV, of course.

 

I live between Austin (30 miles) and San Antonio (50 miles), Texas, and do

not subscribe to cable TV. My omnidirectional TV antenna picks up about a

dozen analog channels well enough for us to watch them regularly. I've

connected the cables that the house builder intended for cable TV to that

antenna, and the AIW cards received the same signals about as well as our TV

sets.

 

Early this year, I went looking for TV Tuners for my Vista x64 - and found

nothing that seemed "right". I bought two: the Hauppauge HVR-1600 and the

Pinnacle PCTV-HD pro stick. Each was on sale for $100 at the time I bought

them. The HVR-1600 plugs into a PCI slot; the Pinnacle plugs into USB and

comes with its own small external antenna (like a car radio antenna). I've

tried them both with that small antenna, but now have them both connect to

that antenna in the attic. They both work - but not as well as I would

like. I've gotten bogged down in all the abbreviations and terms (NTSC,

ATSC, digital, analog, etc.), but no matter what combination of antenna,

card, software, etc., my experience boils down to this...

 

I can use either or both of these tuners with Vista's Media Center (MCE).

Both come with software to do things that MCE won't do - such as the remote

control on the Pinnacle - but NEITHER works with its own software in Vista

x64. A few weeks ago, while I was booted into Vista x86 for some other

reason, I tried to use the tuners with their own software - and they worked!

But neither works yet in x64.

 

In Vista x64 and MCE, I've not yet figured out how to watch those analog

channels, which still come in strong on my TV sets. Both tuners insist that

they can see about 18 digital channels, but can get only about 6 well enough

for me to watch (4 bars or better) - and half of those channels have

programming that don't interest me at all. Even the strongest channels,

though, are inconsistent. I can usually watch NBC and CBS from Austin, but

ABC, FOX and PBS are a sometime thing. The digital pictures are beautiful,

of course, except when they are missing altogether - or skipping like a bad

cell-phone connection.

 

So I can't recommend either of these tuners for Vista x64, at least until

Hauppauge and Pinnacle get their 64-bit drivers and application software

working. (Of course, if you have cable TV, your experience may be much

better than mine.) Suggestions: Keep looking - and waiting. And please

post here when you find something.

Which card and software/driver version are you using? If you have a 64-bit

Vista driver the WinTV software should work.

 

If you have updated the software or drivers you should have run hcwclear to

remove the older version before installing the new version.

I used the latest driver and it installed fine in Vista 64. But, I really

wanted to capture video (from an old VCR and from DVD) and I thought WinTV

only allowed you to watch TV not capture it. I also thought the Hauppauge

web site said that you had to use 3rd party apps for Vista 64 (I will have

to recheck).

The usual Hauppauge message is that you can use 3rd party apps - not that

you must.

 

If you select the input source correctly I think you can record an input

stream from a VCR or DVD.

I have Vista 64-bit and used a DViCO FusionHDTV5 Express card. When I built

my computer in February, it was the only TV tuner card on the market that

would support hi-def digital cable* in Vista 64-bit. It also just happened to

be twice as expensive as any other card on the market ($200).

Windows Media Center requires an alternative component called a CableCard

(which is just now starting to hit the consumer market) to support a digital

signal. So for this reason, my DViCO TV tuner card wasn't recognized by

WIndows Media Center. DViCO did, however, provide their own proprietary

program which worked quite nicely and provided standard DVR features such as

recording to hard drive and pausing live TV.

I've since cancelled my cable subscription entirely in favor of watching

web-based content, but it was a good card while I had it.

*Little Known Fact:

Most TV Tuner cards only support hi-def through an analog antenna, not

through digital cable. My DViCO card was a rare exception.

My soon to be delivered (I hope!) HP Media Center PC comes with a

Hauppauge WinTV HVR TV Tuner card and HP shows a Vista 64 driver for

it on their website:

Don't know if that'll work on any other PC but at least you know

there's a Vista 64 driver for at least one card.

According to Black Gold, that's not the case. They told me to get Main

Concept's MCE Encoder software to enable analogue support in Vista MCE for

their dual hybrid tuner card.

 

I've only got the demo version for now (since Main Concept say "try it

first before buying"), and I'll see how it goes.
