explorer.exe very slow

I've tried the /separate switch for using explorer.exe and it works well.

Unfortunately, when opening or saving within some 64bit software the default

explorer.exe seems to be used and it takes forever to navigate. How can I

fix this?

XP Pro x64. This has always happened on this computer, from day one.
