Vista Ultimate x64 Performance Issues

I have a new laptop with Vista Ultimate x64. Aside from the base

installation I installed Office 2007 Professional and I use Yahoo! music for

downloads.

With my new laptop, most of the time I will power it on to browse the web. I

hit the power button walk away for about 15-20 minutes and usually it is

done doing whatever it does that keeps the utilization at 100%. I did

install Procman.exe and have watched the activity. To me it looks like

svchost.exe reads and writes about every file on the laptop.

Now I've seen 3rd party software out there that claims to enhance the

performance of Vista. From what I remember, this is partially accomplished

by 'tweaking' svchost processes. I'm not sure if the software actually

works.....and what I lose by possibly disabling these features. Essentially,

I feel like I may have purchased my last Windows-based pc.

I have another laptop that I use with XP Pro. As a software developer (IBM

Websphere), I do all my work there. Why does my XP machine run so much more

efficiently than Vista? Is it because I have the 'ultimate' version....so

the machine is bogged down running services that I never use?

It's faster for me to get in my car and drive to work to surf the web than

it is to grab my Vista laptop from its bag and use it.....

Re: Vista Ultimate x64 Performance Issues

Also, with a 6MB Internet connection my laptop started downloading 'Windows

Updates' at 7:39. It is now 8:08 and it is only 32% complete on the install.

On one hand I happy to maintain a secure pc, but on the other hand I hate

the wait time. Again, if I want to grab my laptop to do a quick search on

the Internet I can forget it.

My updates just completed and I now have to restart. Nice. Maybe with the

next reboot I will only have to wait 10 minutes....

Re: Vista Ultimate x64 Performance Issues

When you first use your Vista computer it does spend a lot of time creating

its search indexes and shadow copies of a lot of files. You will appreciate

the quicker searches and possibly the shadow copies at some point. You can

go into the indexing options (control panel \ System and Maintenance \

indexing options) and reduce the areas to index. If I recall you can also

set the priority of the svchost that is doing the indexing to a lower

priority so you can do other activities.
