Unplug hardware

I just installed a new hard drive and cloned the old one. Now, while trying

to stop a USB flash drive, the message pops up, "An error occurred while

Windows was working with the Control Panel file

c:\winnt\system32\hotplug.dll" while using the remove icon; and the same

message with "hdwwiz.cpl" when using "add/remove hardware" in CP. If I just

remove the flash drive, I, of course, receive the "unsafe removal" message.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
