Removing search addresses

I use MSN rather than internet explorer. When I enter an address i.e. google

in the address bar and then click on the green "search web" I can go to the

site without problem. The problem I have is that when you enter an address in

the address bar a scroll down list comes up under the address bar listing all

the sites that I have been to so that you can select one of the listings if

you are going to use it again. I have tried to delete this listing without

success. I have gone to view history and clicked on view and selected all

items listed but still cannot remove the address listing under the address

bar. Any help would be appreciated. I contacted MSN and they had me try

several things including the history thing and they could not solve the

problem either. I have about 30 sites in this list and want to delete them

all.

Ccleaner is the easiset way to clear that up:

When you install it, (unless you *want* it installed) don't check the

box to install the Yahoo toolbar.

HI

followed the web site that you provided and after downloading found that to

open the file I had to have .Net framework version 1.1.4322 on my computer. I

do not have .net framework on my computer so went to microsoft and found that

there are so many .net framework versions that it becomes confusing. The page

now shows version 3.0 I believe ,so don't know if I download this ,which I

wonder, will include 1.1.4322. To date I have not had this requirement come

up while using the computer so wonder if it is really required. As a result I

may pass on this. Your comments please as you are probably more familiar with

this .net framework concoction. Thank you.

Re: Removing search addresses

There are three .Net Frameworks currently available. 1.1, 2 and 3. Get them

from Windows Updates, using the Custom option. Note that if the app requires

v. 1.1, then you have to install that. If it requires v. 2, you have to

install that. Versions 2 and 3 do NOT replace earlier versions. Framework 3

will not help if the app requires Framework 1.1.

Hi Daave

I went to the ccleaner website however it appears that it will clean URL's

that are on internet explorer search. Since I do not use internt explorer I

don't have the URL problem. I use MSN search exclusively and this is where

the URL's are piling up. Will the ccleaner remove the MSN search URL's also

or just the internet explorer search URL's. Presently I do not have any on

internet explorer since I do not use it.

Thank you for your assistance and look foreward to your response.

If you don't use Internet Explorer, what browser do you use? MSN is not a

browser. If your browser is labeled MSN (not just the home page) then you

have an MSN branded version of IE.

RE: Removing search addresses

Hi nass

followed your instruction however there were no URL's in the right pane.

Using the first Hkey item (internet explorer) the wording ab Default type:-

REG_Sz Data:-Value not set. Using the second HKEY (Internet settings) it

showed "Days to Keep" REG_DWORD 0x and 8 zeros (0). The info at the bottom of

the page showed that I had put the info as shown. On the second HKEY

(internet Settings) the URL History was shown under Protocols. Clicking on

protocols and then URL History made no difference. The first steps that you

provided i.e Ctl pnl Network & internet connections did not work either. The

"Use inline Autocomplete" was already unchecked. I did uncheck "web addresses

and forms" boxes. The info provided was very detailed and I thank you for

taking the time to provide the detail. It was very easy for me to follow and

I thank you. I appears that I am stuck with this address business so will

have to put up with it.

Thank you again.

Hi Gary

I click on the butterfly on my desktop or on the start menu to go online and

it brings up the MSN home page. If I want to go to internet explorer which I

do not use I click on it in the start menu but as I said I do not use it.

Again, you are using Internet Explorer. Take my word for it. MSN's browser

is Internet Explorer. What does it say in the title bar when the browser is

open? I'll bet that if you open Internet Explorer, it will take you to the

same page and look almost exactly the same (menus, etc.), though it might

say something different in the title bar.

OP is using MSN Explorer, which is a shell for IE (like Avant or

Maxthon, I suppose):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSN_Explorer

Still, it's close enough to IE for my money, and I assume Ccleaner would

work just fine deleting all traces of browsing.

Did a Google search and found this:

From

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.msn.discussion/browse_thread/thread/3ef2dad98bdc65c9/b63d75aa2794845d

First I'd delete the cookies, temporary internet files, and history. If

this didn't work I'd go into the registry (Select Start >> Run "regedit"

and find

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSN6\Users\%msn-email-address%\Type

dURLs

and delete everything within it, this will delete the MSN Explorer typed

URLS. I'd then repeat this with

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs

for Internet Explorer.

(This method is worth trying if Ccleaner doesn't help.)

Otherwise, there are other utilitities, but they aren't free:

Thanks for the clarification. I always figured it was just a branding, not a

more complicated shell. But I knew for certain that it was IE under there,

Re: Removing search addresses

Hi Gary

Thanks for your response. I guess that you are correct. Seldom do I use

internet explorer however when I went to it ,it was as you say. In the top

right corner is the "web search" box. Below on the same page as I have with

MSN explorer is the address bar where you enter the wesite you want to go to

and to the right you click on the green search box. I entered google in the

MSN address bar to see what happened without clicking on search. There was no

scroll down of previous address that I had , however they still come up when

I go back to the butterfly and bring up the MSN page and enter an address in

the address bar.

Re the .net framework I will do as you suggest and find version 1.1.4322 and

try to get it installed.

You won't likely find version 1.1.4322. Just version 1.1 (which is the same,

they just rounded it off. ) And the easiest way to get the Frameworks is

from Windows Update, Custom option.

RE: Removing search addresses

Okay Reg, try this:

1- Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet

Connections >> Double click Internet Options.

On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:

General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |

Advanced.

Click on General Tab then click on Clear History, also you can set the day

to keep history to Zero (0).

Click on Advanced tab then scroll down to this under security option:

[ ] Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

Close your IE properties then Double click " My Computer " icon and right

click your C:\ partition and select properties from the drop down list.

On the C:\ Properties click on Disk Clean Up Button under general Tab, then

select the temp and whatever you feel to clear from your system, does this

help?.

http://www.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=465

MSN location, see if you can find the temp or the History folder here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\MSN

Toolbar Suite\

Open a run command and type in:

regedit click [OK] locate this key and see if you can find also the History

and the temp in here:

[-] HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSN Apps\

HTH.

Re: Removing search addresses

Gary

I was able to download and install .net framework 1.1 without problem. I

tried the crouchie file but it did not remove any addresses from my MSN

Explorer. There were not any scroll down addresses when clicking on the MSN

address bar while using internet explorer so there was nothing to delete

using crouchie.. In Fact with internet explorer I entered google in the MSN

address bar and and clicked on the green web search bar and went to the site

and then returned to the internet explorer home page and again in the MSN

address bar entered google. There was no drop down list that came up.I had

expected a scroll down list showing that I had just gone to google but there

was nothing. If I had done this on MSN explorer (the butterfly) it would have

been added to the ever present scroll down list of addresses. It does appear

that I am stuck with these addresses on MSN explorer.Another item that I

noted on the addresses that scroll down in MSN explorer is that if I start

typing in an address which say starts with the letter "B", immediately the

scroll down lists all sites that I have been to that starts with the letter

"B". This occurs with any address that starts with a first letter i.e. "F' or

"K" etc the scroll down immediately lists all addresses that start with the

fiirst letter of the address that I am going to search for.

Re: Removing search addresses

I'm a bit lost, since I have never addressed you primary issue, only that of

MSN browser vs. IE and the .Net Framework. I know nothing about "crouchie".

To remove those lists in IE, you use Taskbar and Start menu (in Control

Panel), click on Start Menu tab, click on either Clear or Clear List button

(depending on the view you use.)

Re: Removing search addresses

tried using "crouchie" and it did not work although it may work on internet

explorer however I have found that entering addresses on the MSN address bar

and clicking on the green search button while in internet explorer the

previous addresses when entering a new one do not show up in a scroll down

address list. In other words there is no scroll down. Previous addresses do

not come up . In MSN explorer however they still come up as a scroll down

list. To get the crouchie to download and install I had to install .Net

Framework 1.1 which worked ok.

Thanks for your assistance.

RE: Removing search addresses

hi nass

tried your message with the following results:-

Clear history and keeping history to zero--I already had done this.

re:- empty temporary internet files folder--I had already done this

re- close your IE propeerties---etc--did this and cleared temps but it did

not help

re:- google website--re web forms and web addresses--I had already done what

was suggested

re:- MSN location I tried the C:\documents and settings etc in search but it

would not work. Dialog box came and advised accordingly.(forgot what it

said). Tried "run" with same thing. Didn't really know how to go about this

one

Re-regedit it came up db Default REG_SZ value not set. Nothing there.

So my friend I have given up on this problem and will just live with it.

When I go to internet explorer and type in an address (google) in the MSN

address bar and click on the green search bar I go to the website ok. I hit

the back button and come back to the main page and I entered Yahoo in the MSN

address bar and clicked on the green search bar and went to Yahoo without

problem Using the back button to get back to the main page I entered another

google and there was no scroll down page that came up to show that I had

already gone to google and yahoo. So this seems to work. Going back to MSN

explorer the addresses are still coming up in the scroll down. One thing I

noted was when I enter an address in the MSN address bar and as an example

the first letter of the address will say is F, the scroll down page comes up

and lists all sites that I have gone to all starting with the letter F. This

occurs with any other first letter that I use and it shows all sites starting

with that letter. If I use a letter that is not the first letter in any

addresses previously used then the scroll down does not occur. Thank you for

your time and effort spent to try and resolve this problem. It is very much

appreciated.

Regards
