cannot access boot device (SATA)

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

Got a problem my inlaws purchased a new desktop - P4 duo, 1GB RAM DVD

RW etc.

BUT it came with no HDD. So we went out and got a new Maxtor 160GB

SATA HDD.

Their old machine was had win 2000 pro sp4 all patched up.

with only a 10GB EIDE drive.

I ghosted the old drive to the new one(SATA), enabled S.M.A.R.T, and

tried to boot.

But every time I boot from the new (or old for that matter) HDD I get

the BSOD - 'cannot access boot device etc.......'

I have used Hirens CD to FDisk, format, reformat and do just about

every thing I can think of to be able to get this darn thing to just

boot up. But to no avail. I am stuck.

Any suggestions?? I would GREATLY appreciate any help. Please post

here.

Thank you.

Re: cannot access boot device (SATA)

You have to install sata/raid drivers from "floppy" using the F6 option

early in the process of setting up,or repairing, win2k (to install third

party drivers)

You may also have to amend bios settings to use sata, any requirement for

this will be explained in your mobo manual

The drivers are obtained from the mobo site, or will ahve been supplied with

your PC

This has no floppy drive. the drivers disk given from the HDD

manufacture is not a boot disk and after pressing F6 it will not read

from the drivers disk either.

The bios is already set for SATA (drive 0: HDD 1)

Re: cannot access boot device (SATA)

The F6 Option can *only* be used with a floppy

The sata/raid drivers are supplied by your motherboard manufacturer, not by

your hd manu.

Assuming you are using Win2k, you have to do a repair installation to

install motherboard chipset and other drivers, supplied iether with your

mobo.cd, or from the motherboard site. And this includes using F6 to install

sata raid drivers from floppy.

You will either have to fit a floppy drive, very cheap, use a usb floppy

drive or slipstream the sata raid drivers into a new win2k installation cd

Also read the motherboard manual as to whether there are any bios settings

that require amending, to use a sata drive as the boot drive.
