Network printer - S-L-O-W

Hi all,

 

I have a network at home with a bunch of PCs and laptops, mostly running XP

x86. They're all setup to use a printer through my LAN, which is physically

hooked up to one of the machines and shared.

 

It just so happens that my one XP x64 machine is incredibly slow whenever it

tries to do any sort of printer access. Just navigating through any

application's print options can take 4-5 minutes for each mouse click. The

same operations performed from other machines on my network are fine.

 

I have no trouble printing--everything's fine and there's no error or

warning logged anywhere. It's just that things are very slow, like the

system is trying to do some massive network search for each printer

operation and eventually just timing out.

 

I know this isn't much to go by, but what are the obvious things I should be

looking for?

What make and model printer? Is the printer attached to a print server or

to an XP PC.... and if the PC, LPT or USB?

Actually, there's two printers. My bad for not pointing it out.

 

The first is an HP LaserJet 4350 connected to a laptop (running XP Pro x86)

through its parallel port. The other printer is an HP PhotoSmart 7150,

connected to that same laptop through USB.

 

Other machines can access either printer without any delay. Only the x64

machine is having those slowdown symptoms.

 

Actually, I just double-checked--the x64 machine is only set up to print to

the laser printer--the other one isn't set up at all. If I remember

correctly I couldn't find 64-bit drivers for the 7150.

 

The laptop to which both printers are physically connected is hooked up

wirelessly to my router (a Linksys WRT54G). All other PCs in my LAN are

wired to the router.
