Vista to XP Downgrade

Bought my Daughter an ACER Aspire 5100 Laptop for her studies in

college. Found out the apps she will be running on it are not

supported for Vista (which came preloaded on her Laptop) I am

wondering if anyone knows if I can format then install XP without any

problems.

Re: Vista to XP Downgrade

The problems may be with Windows XP compatibility.

Check with Acer to verify the necessary Windows XP drivers are

available for that laptop.

As long as there are no compatibility issues, install Windows XP

normally.

I am not sure about Acer, but Dell and others sell computers with

Windows XP:

http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/winxp_inspn?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1

Returning the laptop and getting one configured as you want will

probably be the easiest.

If she has problems and needs to contact tech support, the original

operating system will speed things up.

Another operating system other than original may delay support until

she reinstalls original operating system.

Follow Jupiter's advice. Many laptops do not have the driver support

necessary for XP unless they sell them with XP.

Acer are fairly good with drivers. Download the full set from the website

(use the model number on the BACK of the machine as a reference) using Vista

-or another computer- and copy them to a USB key.

The main issues you will meet are those of not having a disk (which you

could borrow) or licence key, which you can't as it can only be used once.

AFAIK Microsoft won't supply you with one, either. (anyone know differently?)

You must buy a retail full copy of XP. You don't have downgrade rights with

OEM software.

Hi:

Please provide us the list of the unsupported apps.

Maybe there is a workaround that might avoid the trouble of

installing/downgrading/buying a license of XP from scratch.

Re: Vista to XP Downgrade

For any SATA drivers, you will need them on a floppy to F6 during the

install. This is for XP not Vista.

Re: Vista to XP Downgrade

Unsupported just means the author won't resolve any problems that might

arise under Vista. It's not the same as incompatible or won't work.

Many unsupported applications work well under Vista and many applications

which run perfectly under XP are now unsupported, usually because the

version has been superseded by later ones.

If they worked and did their necessary functions, I don't think he would be

asking about resorting to XP.

Re: Vista to XP Downgrade

Dominic:

Sorry for my misinterpretation of the English text.

I figured that "unsupported" was referring to Vista, in the sense that Vista

was not supporting officially those misterious apps.

I didn't regard ("my misinterpretation") the software developers as the

unsupporting party.

My native language is Spanish so sometimes I may miss something in the

translation/interpretation bridge.

Re: Vista to XP Downgrade

The problem is that the HardLuckKid didn't say which applications he was

referring to, so we don't know if he has been frightened off unnecessarily

by seeing a statement that they were unsupported or the applications really

won't work because, for example, they need system level drivers.

He doesn't seem very knowledgeable about computing. A quick visit to his

local Acer support site would have shown that the Aspire 5100 has Windows XP

drivers available.

Re: Vista to XP Downgrade

He does have downgrade rights to XP

· The only products that have downgrade rights are Vista Business or

Vista Ultimate, which then can be "downgraded" to XP Pro. If you're wanting

to do this, or your customers line of business application doesn't work with

Vista yet, the best thing to do to activate the product is call this phone

number, 0800 676 334. If you're wanting to know more information about this

procedure, then I'm happy to email you the documentation.

No problems just requirements: her collage curriculum has software

that requires XP and I bought this Laptop back in April as a

graduation present - not realizing that the college she will be

attending doesn't support Vista as of yet but will be making the

transition later next year. Thanks for your help

She is going in as a Math Major and her school posted computer

requirements for the software she will be using this semester they

explicitly said XP Pro and that they will be transitioning to Vista

sometime next year - so for now I have to do a downgrade to XP Pro -

( I realize the drivers may be an Issue ) but I'm hoping there is a

work around.

Re: Vista to XP Downgrade

There may be a few issues with drivers/acer aplications but the major ones

should be find like sound & video

I would clean install XP and let us know what drivers have not been

installed, Windows Update may have the drivers also, lets take it one step

at a time and if everything turns to custard you can always using the Acer

vista recovery cd

There XP drivers for your model on the Acer Asia Pacific website
