Sunday morn

W2k pro

It wont start.

This is a client's computer. A new client. Just been doing general

maintenance and backups for this last week. Had not gotten to this computer.

It quit last Thursday.

displays the splash screen, the drive stops, flash of error message and

reboot

I cannot read the error, tried pausing,... no joy

Booted to a prompt and ran a full disk scan.

same behavior

Connected to another computer to retrieve documents and stuff.

And explored: the windows folder exists, the registry files are listed (I

copied them just in case,...)

================

Connected to the original computer:

Attempted to repair with the disk: no installation of windows was found to

repair.

I have done the deads described in MS articles: replaced the ntdietect,,,,

files

I have used the w2k reg repair. twice: it is done in 5 seconds

I installed windows to a temp folder. The computer boots fine and runs fine.

"twas an automatic update the night before the problem

the restore point has just one small file: hence no restore points.

I have tried to get a boot log: nope.

I figger some file(s) are damaged: so what files can I replace that will not

interfere with the existing programs,...

If the registry is OK should the w2k registry repair utility be finished

fast? Or should it rebuild the files anyway?

Any other registry repair utils I can run at a command line?

And so on

Re: Black screen flash and reboot

Try a digital camera to read the stop code. Almost always hardware failure

and or driver corruption. You can also copy off the memory.dmp file from

your parallel install. These may also help.
