Not Getting an IP address after Installation

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hello, I just installed the trial version of xp pro 64 on my fully functional

computer this morning (but onto a new HDD of course, I like my computer

running after I break it). Anyway, after the complete installation, I was

unable to connnect to the internet via my home network. I have a linksys

router and when I open IE and typed http://192.168.1.1 nothing happened. I

then clicked start-run-cmd and typed ipconfig and got no responses. I opened

my device manager and my network adapter (onboard - A8N-SLI) did not have any

problems, but I had 3 yellow ? under other devices - multimedia adapter (thus

no sound); other pci bridge; unknown device.

I reinstalled, turned off the default firewall, with no change in results.

I clicked the network connection-support-and the window was blank-I clicked

repair and it said cannot repair failed to query TCP/IP settings.

I called Linksys support and they said the OS installation had failed and to

reinstall, which I did (for the 3rd time) with no change in results.

As background, just prior to installing xppro64 over xphome, I was connected

to the internet (as in the 2 minutes prior-just to download my 8800gtx

drivers - which I installed immediately after my first boot). So, I know my

internet connection is working, my router is setup properly, my connections

are good, and my network is properly setup and functional.

Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated. Reinstalling an OS over and

over hasnt seemed to help (what a surprise).

RE: Not Getting an IP address after Installation

Ronis:

I once installed XP Pro x64 on your same mobo.

If I am not wrong, XP X64 does not include drivers for your onboard network

device.

You have to install Nvidia 6.69's.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_win_server2003_x64_amd_6.69.html

which includes:

Audio Driver (v4.62) "WHQL"

Audio Utility (v4.51)

Ethernet Driver NRM (v4.75) "WHQL"

Network Management Tools NRM (v4.85)

SMBus Driver (v4.5) "WHQL"

Installer (v4.93)

WinXP IDE SataRAID Driver (v5.52) "WHQL"

WinXP IDE SataIDE Driver (v5.52) "WHQL"

WinXP RAIDTOOL Application (v5.52)

Please do not install the dreaded Nvidia firewall during the setup.

It will disable your internet access.

After the required reboot you should be able to use your network.

About the 3 unknown devices (question marks on device manager)

1.- Game port (old joystick port), NOT supported in XP x64 (disable it in

BIOS)

2.- MIDI port, NOT supported in XP x64 (disable it in BIOS)

3.- AKT 110 (or ATK 110, or something like that) device. Its driver is

inside one of the ASUS utilities for your mobo (can't remember which)

Good luck.

Remember - not installing the Firewall, is not enough. You have to install

it and then un-install it!

Right? ;0o

RE: Not Getting an IP address after Installation

Hi:

The third unknown device is "ATK0110 ACPI UTILITY"

The ASUS utilities I cannot recall are:

1.- ASUS AiBooster or

2.- ASUS PC Probe

Download both of them and expand (using, e.g., WinRAR) their files.

Look in the subfolders and you will find the ATK0110 inf file with its

corresponding drivers.

Good luck

Re: Not Getting an IP address after Installation

Hi Tony:

I must surely be the exception!

I never installed the NVidia Firewall so I never had to uninstall it.

I never had troubles connecting to the Internet, except for the bad quality

of my ISP.

Just don't know how or why I was the lucky exception!

I have to admit that "the rest" had to go throught the install/unistall

chores, though.

Re: Not Getting an IP address after Installation

It's the AiBooster that contains the driver.

PC Probe is just monitoring software.

Re: Not Getting an IP address after Installation

AIBooster can be ignored and left non-functional.

The missing PCI Bridge is probably the key and would be resolved by

installing the chipset drivers as Carlos has suggested. Ronis could also be

one who needs to install and uninstall the nVidia firewall - the Network

Access Manager.

The BIOS version may also be relevant. There was an update to the LAN ROM in

BIOS 1011.

The best answers to board specific problems will probably be found in the

ASUS forums.

Carlos:

I have 2 Asus A8N-E motherboards with the NF4 chipsets with the Nvidia

Firewall installed without any problems. I posted it a couple years ago and

was told not to recommend it since most were having problems. Have a great

day.
