Java Help Please

What a mess that sun life site is. In any event, I do have the latest

java 6 update 2 installed as well as J2SE Runtime Environment 5 update

12.

I had java working with xp64 before but have had top reimage and now

no luck. For example, logitech mouseware does not show the mouse. When

I drag the dialog box around, the mouse magically appears...I also

have another revenue canada applet which will work, but requires alt

tabbing....click something, nothing happens, alt tab back and forth,

then you see the effect of your previous click....

this is all very annoying. checking my image in my previous install, I

had these apps working perfectly with java virtual machine 5 update 5,

and java 6 update 1. It now does not work well with JVM 5 update 12

and Java 6 update 2...?????

what gives with this ? do I need both installed ? am I missing

something ? why is the sun site so convoluted ??

any input appreciated..

Best Regards,

Re: Java Help Please

What happens when you go back to Java 6 update 1? if it works ok and not

with Java 6 update 2 then that's a problem you should take up with Sun

RE: Java Help Please

Rabid man:

You only need one JRE installed in your system.

I just use the latest JRE6 u2 and have no problems.

Also take into account that installing a newer version doesn't uninstall the

previous one.

You have to do it manually.

Re: Java Help Please

appreciate the responses...

so basically Java and JRE are the same with different names correct ?

So I should just have 1 version running and uninstall the others...

What is the recommendation, which is better ?

of course I searched for the older versions to try to mimic what I had

before but couldn't find them...

is it better to try Java update 1 or JRE 5 update 5 ? I had both

these installed previous and it

worked...

what a confusing joke this is, must be a bunch of former MS employees

at SUN

It was a real problem to get it to work before and that continues

now...

so bottom line is, 1 java install only, should it be JRE or Java, and

if it doesn't work, uninstall

and try other versions 1 at a time ??

cheers

Re: Java Help Please

Rabid man:

Go for the latest JRE (Java Runtime Environment) 6 update 2.

It is the one that is more compatible with Vista.

The required file is "jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe"

The confusing part is that Sun names Java 6 also as 1.6

It doesn't matter whether you have an AMD or Pentium class processor because

it is 32-bit Java.

Re: Java Help Please

okay

spent 2 hours on this with no luck...both programs do not work

properly

Spent some time adjusting compatibility modes, 1 program will work if

I disable visual themes, run at 256 and in XP mode.

Of course this garbles my display which is not what I'm after

As I found older versions of Java, I mimicked the install where it

worked to no avail

Bottom line, Java doesn't work reliably in xp64

thanks to all who offered advice

maybe will waste another evening on this soon

Re: Java Help Please

Rabid man:

Reading again your first post I guess that there must be something else than

Java related issues in your PC.

Anyway, here's a page where you can test Java functionality.

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

Best of luck.

Re: Java Help Please

Hi

Okay, something really weird...

Did the validation thing - fine

I discovered that one program actually works properly, but only on my

second spanned monitor !??!?

Logitech mouseware continues to not display the mouse in the setting

until I drag the window off and back on the screen...

It does not work on the second monitor

o well, its workable for now so that is good enough I suppose

thanks for all the support and help
