NAS_server crashing, takes mapped users with it

Got an issue that's resurfaced a few times. Win2k Server crashes due to

non-paged memory leak, and any workstations with mapped drives to the server

slow down to a crawl, no icons on the desktop, very slow to respond. Why

would the server take down these users, instead of dosconnect?
