Guest jmoleary@earthlink.net Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 I've had this Windows 2000 box for 5 years. One PC with a cable internet connection. Today I turned on my PC and logged on and it logged on just fine but everything I have customized is GONE. My desktop, user settings, etc. It treated me as if I were a completely new user, asking me for internet connection settings, MS Office settings, etc. My user name is "joe". I can still see my old desktop sitting there under the "Documents and Settings\joe" folder but now windows apparently is using "Documents and Settings\joe.joeo" Can anyone tell me how I can let Windows know to use the old folders, desktop settings, display settings, etc?
Guest Dave Patrick Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Re: Lost identity: W2k treats me like a new user for all settings Sounds like the profile is corrupt. If the profile is corrupt, you can rename the profile(while logged on as local admin), then when the user logs on again a new profile will be created from the image in \default user. You can then copy over the items you need from the renamed profile. Copy the folder contents not the folders themselves. When your sure you have all you need, you can delete the renamed profile(s). Use the import function of your e-mail software. Do not overwrite ntuser.dat -- Regards, Dave Patrick ....Please no email replies - reply in newsgroup. Suggest taking a look at the thread under 'G Lykos' starting 10/18. There may be a simpler solution. <jmoleary@earthlink.net> wrote in message news:1193006536.102781.180940@y27g2000pre.googlegroups.com... > I've had this Windows 2000 box for 5 years.
