Guest ygo3@yahoo.com Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 We are trying to install a Maxtor ATA 133 IDE PCI controller card, and it simply doesn't work. The new wrinkle is this: The card has been physically removed from the system. Every time the machine boots, the "Found New Hardware Wizard" appears and attempts to install the non-existent PCI device! Every time we attempt to install, the driver install (or update) dialog tells us that the driver cannot be found, although it is there. So, we UNINSTALL the device, and the uninstall wizard confirms that the device has been permanently removed from the system, that is, until the next time we boot, and this sad tale starts all over again. Anyone seen the movie "Groundhog Day?" This is a lot like that... Any ideas? Why is Windows attempting to install a non-existent device? Is there any way to convince the OS that it should stop doing that? Comments welcome, and THANKS! ygo3@yahoo.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guest Dave Patrick Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Re: OS Attempts to Install Non-existent Device ???? To display hidden devices, non-Plug and Play devices, and devices not attached to the computer (commonly known as "ghosted" or "phantom" devices) Save the following two lines as a file then execute. --------------------------setdev.bat--------------------- set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1 start devmgmt.msc --------------------------------------------------------- Then, View|Show Hidden Devices to remove or reconfigure these devices. Do not edit the registry. -- Regards, Dave Patrick ....Please no email replies - reply in newsgroup.
