Safely removing a USB device

When I connect my camera phone to my Win98 SE desktop it won't

shutdown and I need to do a reset. I saw the option to safely

remove it somewhere but can't find it again. It won't shut down if

I leave it in or take it out. It connects to a USB port.

My XP Notebook has an icon in the Sys Tray that you can right click

and safely remove it.

I also posted in Alt.windows98. If I get the answer there I'll post

it here and vice versa.

Any ideas?

Re: Safely removing a USB device

There is no "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in Win98 for USB-connected devices except

through third-party drivers. You would have to install either a generic third-party

USB mass storage driver or a device maker's driver to get the icon.

What software/driver are you using to try to access the camera phone? Some software

and a driver need to be installed, and they must be specifically written for Win98.

Bill,

Don't know if this is even feasible but can you right click the camera in

Explorer and eject?

Is there a reason to actually eject them? I usually just pull them

out. If I get an error message, i just click cancel and thats about

it.

Re: Safely removing a USB device

Hi Glen,

The software is Nextel's Media Loader. Connect the Motorola camera

( Nextel I-870 ) to a USB port and it shows the pictures in the

camera and on the HD. You copy the files on the phone to the HDD.

It works like it should. The program was downloaded from Motorola's

site. You load the program first.

I tried removing it from Device Manager then re-starting and it did

not shut down. The right click menu did not have a safe remove

option. The program is probably lacking that option. My USB HDD puts

and icon in the systray and it can be safely removed.

I'll try to find another program.

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Ron,

That would probably do it but it doesn't put and icon anywhere

except Device Manager and that doesn't work.

Thanks,

Bill
