XP x64 sharing over LAN with Windows 2000

I'm working at a friends network with these two PC's on a LAN.

They are firewalled externally, so all win software firewalling is

disabled on both.

I'd like to know how to allow acces from and to both, by both

machines, on the LAN.

One is running Windows 2000 (all up to date), the other Windows XP Pro

x64 Edition.

 

I have them both using the same name workgroup, but they can't access

each other.

Can someone tell me how on earth I can make these two stand-alone

workstations see each other?

Both have only one user, and they log on automatically. No crap with

Groups or anything.

 

And yes, I know about all security risks involved. There just seems no

way I can make

either of them allow access. And those silly wizzards make me want to

cry, they're so useless!

 

I'm using TotalCommander, and like to have the least possible

protocols enabled in this Network.

I've never in my life had TotalCommander freeze on me, except for when

I try to access the other PC

on this LAN. It just seems to loop in some endless zero-divide just

because it's looking

for the other machine or something.

 

I'm tempted to go and run SlimFTPd on both, because hell, I have that

working before this dreadful

networking system of MS will ever work, so it seems. And ALL I need to

do is exchange some files.

 

So yeah, if there's no way to easily fix this, and nobody replies

here, slimftpd is what it will be.

It's ridiculous to have to spend so much time on such trivial task!

The two machines need to be on the same workgroup, have NetBIOS over

TCP/IP enabled, and unless you want to be entering explicit credentials,

you'll need the usernames and passwords to be identical on both

machines. You can't use a blank password unless you fiddle with the

policy settings.

 

That's it. After that you should be able to see the other machine in the

workgroup. If you want to transfer files between them you'll need to

create shares or connect to the default hidden shares (C$ etc) for the

disks.

Hi,

therte is much stuff to talk about networking.

try to google a "networking for beginners"

 

fist you should think about the connection (wire or else)

to a router ?

does that deliver ip adresses (DHCP server enabled / DHCP client on your

machine too ?), or do you adjust yourself on your networkcard

 

are both machines in same ip range / subnet

 

do you have NetBios over IP enabled,

file and printersharing / client for MS networks installed / aktivated

 

do your shares have simple sharing enabled / or are files on ntfs drive with

sharing and acces protection

 

do your pc's have accounts, that are allowd to access ?

 

that is not any fault of MS, this in ip - networking by standards
