How to format large drive fat32?

I'm running XP 64bit. I have a WD 750GB sata drive. I want a large fat32

partition on it, about 650GB. The windows based tools that Western Digital

make don't run under XP64, and the dos based tool doesn't recognize sata

drives. XP will only format it as ntfs, but I need fat32.

 

So - how can I create a 650GB fat32 partition on this drive?

Why in the world would you even WANT FAT32? Seriously, that's a really BAD

choice for a large drive.

 

XP x64 doesn't support creating FAT32 hard drives. And I don't think

anything will create a FAT drive that large.

oh, and you could create a FAT drive from the command line. I don't have a

copy of XP x64 running here right now (all on Vista64 or Server 2k8 64), but

the diskpart utility should create the partition (and in Vista/Server 2k8

will do formatting as well), but then you'll need to use the command line

format utility which will let you specify FAT32.

Because I double boot to Win98 on all of my boxes. And if I have to, I can

boot from an old dos boot disk, and still access my drives. Lately, I've

been loading Linux instead of Win98, and when I get round to getting rid of

Win98 on all of my boxes, then I'll consider moving on from fat32.

Just be aware that Windows 98 no longer gets any security updates. I would

not run it on any box connected to the Internet. Seriously.

However, they are your boxes. Have you considered using MS VirtualPC 2007 or

Virtual Server 2005 or VMWare Workstation to run Win98 in a virtual machine

on XP? Granted, other "rescue methods" are necessary to get HD read access

if the OS fails to boot.

As far as I know, there are no SATA drivers for Windows 98, so even if you

could format the drive FAT32 your Windows 98 installations would not be able

to use it.

It will allow you to format jumbo size partitions in FAT32.

I had to use it once for formatting the 160 GB IDE HD included in my LAN

disk Conceptronic case.

I've tried that tool. Its internal calculator breaks on disks larger

than 500GB

Eccentric, sure, totally insane? No, only partially nutso. I do things my

way if I think it gets the job done with the least amount of pain. I don't

have to adopt policies that make management happy, I don't have to satisfy

some comittee that this helps maximize the shareholders wealth, and I don't

need permission from IT :-)

 

In the past, dual booting to Win98 got the job done with the least amount of

pain. I can't use a virtual machine because one of the things I do is boot

to another OS and backup/restore my XP partition. When I install the OS and

get it setup the way I want and patched to the current SP, I then boot to

another OS and make a copy of the entire boot partion.

 

Then, when I do something stupid, or Windows does something stupid, I simply

boot to another OS, and selectively restore the files. In the real world

they call this re-imaging, only technically I don't use an image, I just use

discreetly copied files. I've done it like this for many years, and I've

restored my xP and Win2000 installs several times - saving me the pain of

having to reinstall windows.

 

Looks like Win98 is finally out the door, as Win98 won't install on my

current box - it's a AMD Phenom quad core with 2GB ram, and Win98 chokes for

some reason. So I stuck Slackware 12 on it and I'm using that in place of

win98.

OK. I totally get it. Ever since Windows 3.x, I used to use a way of setting

up multi-booting systems that involved a FAT system volume. However Windows

XP came along and made the method sub-optimum for XP on large drives.

Vista's boot loader simply totally blew it out of the water. Now I set up XP

and Vista 'on metal', dual booting, with earlier systems in virtual

machines. I suits my requirements-I don't use 9x systems much now. But, by

what you say, your requirements do vary.

 

I am not familiar with Slackware 12. Thanks for the mention. I'll have a

look out of curiosity, if nothing else. who knows...

Slackware is another Linux variant. Unlike Redhat and others that are

trying to be more like Windows, Slackware is trying to be more like

Unix, and is not for the faint of heart. If hunting down drivers and

compiling your own kernel are tasks that don't scare you, then by all

means give it a shot. I've been running it for about 3 or 4 years now.

On my laptop, the only reason I boot to Windows is when I need to use

visual studio. Other then that, I only use Linux.

 

Another thought that occurred to me was to simply install a second

copy of XP on a different partition. That way I can boot to the other

to do maintenance on the primary partition. I stuck a 750GB drive in

the box (woohoo!) so disk space is no longer a premium :)

You might want to consider something like Acronis TrueImage. I've found it

quite satisfactory. I'm also using Windows Home Server to do this, but they

don't support XP x64. (Vista 64 is coming "soon", whatever that means.)

By the looks of it, System Rescue CD has damn near anything anyone would

ever need, for any rescue-task!

 

For a pure Windows-based setup, I think Charlie has a point - Acronis seems
