Visual C++ [any year / version] refuses to install

I recently got a friend of mine to construct this PC for me. He bought an OEM

version of Vista x64 to put on it, and as such, I'm unable to talk directly

to microsoft unless I want to pay like $60 per incident. So, here's my issue:

I have two programs which require an updated version of Visual C++: Norton

Internet Security and BioShock. I have tried installing both Visual C++ 2005

and 2008, but after I reboot, the programs still give me the same error

messages, which, after being chased through tech support for both programs,

leads me back to a needed VC++ update.

My system specs are:

Vista Home Premium x64

1.6GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor clocked at 2.63GHz

4GB (2x2GB) G.SKILL RAM

nVidia GeForce 6600 LE 512 [i don't know if you need this much, but it can't

hurt =) ]

What exactly is your question? Is it where to find the VC++ upgrade?

RE: Visual C++ [any year / version] refuses to install

Hi,

From my experience I have found that BOTH versions (x64 and x86) of VC++ are

needed to be installed simultaneously in Vista x64.

For example, ffdshow and Rivatuner (x86 programs) would originate SideBySide

errors in the registry when they were run.

After installing the necessary VC++2005 (x86) in Vista x64 those errors

disappeared.

Here you have a link to the VC++ downloads available:

No, I know where to find the upgrades, I just don't know why this is

happening. I have already tried upgrading my VC++ from stock to both 2005 and

2008 releases. Yet, my Norton instillation dies and BioShock still tells me

"Side by Side" config is incorrect.

RE: Visual C++ [any year / version] refuses to install

Interesting. well, I tried installing both versions of VC++ 2008, and that

was a no-go, so I tried uninstalling VC++2005 x64 so I could install both at

the same time, and it won't let me uninstall. it sais something like "The

installation file your looking for cannot be found" and it wants me to find a

file like "vcredist.msi". anyone know how to manually uninstall VC++ 2005

(this includes removing it from the add / remove programs list)?

RE: Visual C++ [any year / version] refuses to install

The only idea I have is to install it again in order to rebuild/repair the

missing files and then uninstall it.

Uninstall entries ("removing it from the add / remove programs list") are

located in the registry at

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

for x64 apps and

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

for the x86 apps

RE: Visual C++ [any year / version] refuses to install

Well, it's not so much that I can't uninstall, but that if I download the

file to try to install, it automatically thinks I'm trying to uninstall

(probably because of the entry in the registry) and because it can't find the

file, it asks me for its location. I'm posting this before I attempt to

remove the registry entries and install again. btw thanks for all the help so

far guys!

RE: Visual C++ [any year / version] refuses to install

by the way guys, I surfed the net a little, and found out what my issue was.

because I tried to install VC++ 2005 x86 twice, it had a double entry in the

registry. when I uninstalled it, only one of the entries was removed. when I

tried to reinstall it, because of the blank registry entry, the install exe

was assuming I wanted to uninstall, but couldn't find out where the files

were. I went into the registry, renamed the entry, and reinstalled it, and

now my programs work. Thanks for all your help! I'll definatly turn here if I

ever need anything else!
