Re: IE6 for w2k server

You cannot if you applied any Serivce Pack to Windows 2000 while Internet

Explorer 6 was installed. If you have not done that then you will see the

installation of IE6 in Add\Remove off the Control Panel. And you can

Uninstall it there. If you do not see it there then it cannot be done. The

reason for this is because installation of Internet Explorer changes the

Shell in Windows 2000 and an installation of a Service Pack makes the new

shell permanent.

Re: IE6 for w2k server

Well that's not entirely correct. Some years ago I was successful more than

once by setting

"IsInstalled" to zero

I used the regedit described in this article to reinstall IE. I know the

article says for Windows XP, but I used it successfully on Windows 2000.

Seems like after setting "IsInstalled" to 0, and after restart then IE/OE

reverted back to IE5.0 Then you can just run the setup again for IE6

for IE

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed

Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

for OE

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed

Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

The kb article has changed since then. (318378) and may no longer apply.

Re: IE6 for w2k server

Hi Dave. That is to work with Outlook Express. Used it many times. The way

to check what I mentioned is to look at the verision of explorer.exe after

the upgrade to IE 6. Then if you think you can return to IE 5 or 5.5 after a

Service Pack has been installed over IE 6 is to go look at the version of

explorer.exe after the putative attempt to return IE to a prior version. It

will still be the updated shell. If you can do it that would be something as

Microsoft also says it cannot be done.

Here is a page that tells why Ineternet Explorer may not appear in

Add/Remvoe:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303485/en-us

The statement I made that it cannot be removed after a Service Pack install

is at the site "somewhere:" but where exactly is a different question. Of

course Dave if you can do it that is always nice to know. I just never was

successful doing it and is why I do not install service packs after a IE

"upgrade" in Windows 2000. If I am going to apply a service pack I return IE

to a prior version (IE 5.01) first.
