Hello bassbag,

On the right pane press the PLUS sign and you can add the counters you like.

Have you selected or "added" counters to be monitored? Click on the +

button on top of the graph. Read the help file for more help.

Thanks for reply

If i try to add a counter ,the process mmc.exe proceeds to use 100% cpu

which usually results in the performance monitor hanging with a

"white" screen.I then have to use task manager to close the process.

This results in the performance monitor gui hanging "white" at 100% cpu

usage, which i then have to terminate with taskmanger. An event viewer

log is also generated with this error.....

.........................

Perflib

The open procedure for service "PerfDisk" in DLL

"C:\WINNT\system32\perfdisk.dll" has taken longer than the established

wait time to complete. There may be a problem with this extensible

counter or the service it is collecting data from or the system may

have been very busy when this call was attempted.

Hello bassbag,

Please post the complete event viewer error. Which counter do you try to

add to the console?

Here are 3 more event logs that seem to pop up ,that i guess may have

something to do with the problem?.These events are created by

winmgmt.exe upon rebooting the pc.These three entries happen every boot.

WMI ADAP was unable to load the ASP.NET performance library because it

returned invalid data: 0x0

...................................

WMI ADAP was unable to load the ASP.NET_2.0.50727 performance library

...................................

WMI ADAP was unable to process the PerfDisk performance library due to

Hello...

Icant actually add any counter.Just clicking the add button results in

teh windows eggtimer popping up.The cpu then hits 100% (mmc.exe) is

responsible for this. The whole performance monitor gui then turns

white... i guess because all the cpu is being used so it cant render?.I

then have to terminate the process. If i leave it it just stays in that

state.

You might give this a go.

Also you can use a gui tool to manage counter exctrlst.exe the tool can be

found in the support\tools directory on your CD-Rom

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/48edd368-2bde-4647-9fea-1b5f28a23ca91033.mspx?mfr=true

I have followed the instructions given at the link you kindly supplied

,including dredging performance libraries and reregistering them

..I also incresed timeout in the perfdisk and perfproc

performance>collect and open entries (from 5000 to 10000).However none

of these has seemed to fix the problem :(

Ive also downloaded the extensible counter list tool and installed

it.This shows that performance counters are enabled.Im not sdure how to

interpret anything else that it shows?.see pic.

I'm guessing the problem is not with the counters but because the system is

busy or overloaded. If you believe this *isn't* the case then these may

help.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows 2000

What an In-Place Windows 2000 Upgrade Changes and What It Does Not Change

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=306952

Be sure to apply SP4 and these two below to your repair install before

connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

Thank you for all your help.I do have an old system p3 733mhz 392

ram. However i am choosy with my apps and dont use any resource hogging

programes.Indeed my physical ram usually never drops below 160m of

ram.I know its low but i basically use this pc for browsing so dont

need huge amounts of ram.I use a cpu monitor in system tray to see if

its busy ,and after all my apps has loaded it usually sits on around 6%

cpu used.I have reinstalled sp4 but nothings altered.I will look at my

applications next to try and see if theres a problem there.I know that

my firewall (sygate pro) can sometimes take an age to load and its

process smc.exe can use a lot of processor when this happens.Ill

disable all my apps and go from there. If that doesnt work ill go

through all those links and try that ,so i guess i wont reply for a

little while.I hvanet really bothered with the performance monitor

before so dont know whther its always behaved that way on my

machine.Other than that my pc works fine with no problems that im aware

of.The thought of it not working though bugs me (even though i dont use

it i like things to work) and i may reinstall windows at some point

just to see if it ever did work on this system.

Thanks again for all your(and others)invaluable help ,and ill post back

with any results.

As a last ditch you might also try from a 'Safe Mode' boot to rule out some

application interference.

I thought id try the safe mode route which you suggested and have had

mixed results ,but a favourable outcome.I had no problem adding

counters to the PM in safe mode and added two as an experiment. When i

tried to save that console though (it asked to overwite the original

perfmon.msc in system 32) it would not do it saying it couldnt overwite

it.I then navigated to the said system 32 folder and found the

perfmon.msc and strangley perfmon.exe.Both files opened performance

monitor.Anyway i renamed both files with a .txt extension. This allowed

me to save the performance monitor with the two counters that i had

just added ,back in to the system 32 folder.I then rebooted and clicked

performance monitor and indeed it is now working. One thing that still

doesnt work (but im not going to bother about it) is that i still

cannot add a counter without the original 100% cpu and freezing

problem.I now know though, that i can add whatever i want into it in

safemode and it will save ok.This is now an acceptable solution for me.

Thank you once again for your expert advice and to this excellent

group.I msure i will be asking more w2k questions in the future.

Thanks again.
