Booting up old Dell Optiplex GX260 "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" error

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hello,

My father's old Dell Optiplex GX260 with Windows 2000 SP4 (all updates)

gave an "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" error. It happened right after the

loading graph reached "C" in "Corporation". I had to use a non-Dell 2000

(I don't think it is slipstreamed with a SP) CD and go to its recovery

console (not repair install) and do a repair. After it was done, it said

it finished repairing some issues (didn't specify what type of issues).

Machine was rebooted automatically and Windows 2000 SP4 booted up fine.

I did not see any problems after that. I checked the event logs and

didn't see anything about the issues I ran into earlier. I did notice

the OS was last booted and shut down on 12/15/2007. I do recall getting

updates from Windows Updates. I doubt they were related because they

required a reboot.

My question is what happened? How often this problem occur? And is there

a way to find out what chkdsk did in its repair? Thank you in advance. :)

Re: Booting up old Dell Optiplex GX260 "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" error

Usually means that boot.ini is no longer pointing to the boot partition or

possibly a controller driver issue.

If a volume's dirty bit is set, this indicates that the file system may be

in an inconsistent state. The dirty bit can be set because the volume is

online and has outstanding changes, because changes were made to the volume

and the computer shutdown before the changes were committed to disk, or

because corruption was detected on the volume. If the dirty bit is set when

the computer restarts, chkdsk runs to verify the consistency of the volume.

When Autochk runs against a volume at boot time it records its output to a

file called Bootex.log in the root of the volume being checked. The Winlogon

service then moves the contents of each Bootex.log file to the Application

Event log. One event log message for each volume checked is recorded. So

check the application event log for details.

Thanks. So far, the OS is working now. I guess we will never know what
