Guest bill allemann Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 I installed Win2k on an old Win98 machine, and it seemed to go OK. When I used Windows Update it goes to the webpage OK, but will not do the downloads. I ran Update on another win2k pc and the update process still operates like it alway did. On the problem pc, I ran inetwiz, and web browsing, etc seems normal. Any ideas why Update page will not cooperate?

While the transition from one to the other is supported, you sometimes run into some very strange problems - it all depends on the history of your Win98 installation. If this was my machine then I would save all my important files (including my EMail files), then install a clean copy of Win2000 on a freshly formatted disk. In this way you get a guaranteed outcome of a robust Win2000 installation, not something that bears the scars of many years of use (abuse?). Did I mention that you must test your backups before you format the hard disk?

Windows update will not function properly until the browser is updated
Guest bill allemann Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Re: Problem after upgrading old PC to Win2k the problem seems to have mostly due to an old dns reference in the network settings. win98 was able to work around the obsolete settings somehow, but win2k could not. bill "philo" <philo@privacy.net> wrote in message news:u8rQXGVXIHA.4272@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > > "bill allemann" <custom4173@sbcglobal.netINVALID> wrote in message > news:%2313N1FRXIHA.5448@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... >> I installed Win2k on an old Win98 machine, and it seemed to go OK. >> When I used Windows Update it goes to the webpage OK, but will not do the >> downloads. >> I ran Update on another win2k pc and the update process still operates > like >> it alway did. >> On the problem pc, I ran inetwiz, and web browsing, etc seems normal. >> Any ideas why Update page will not cooperate? >> >> > Before you go to the update page..you need to install IE6. > > Windows update will not function properly until the browser is updated > >
