Guest 360freq Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 hello, I am new to the forums. I've spent weeks online looking for an answer.. to no avail and I now truly need some input. home System: Win2000 SP4 ... Local Computer (no Administration) I just purchased a new HP Printer. the HP setup software requires the "Windows Installer 3.1" (v2 KB893803). I believe it's listed as "MSIServer" under Services. this recent version installed fine.. but all is not well. I guess certain applications with an executable of .MSI need to have this service for the software to install. (this also means I can't run .NET Framework 2.0 and other apps etc..) whether it's set to Manual or Automatic, the Windows Installer Service will not Start. the message I receive is: "Could not start the MSIServer service on Local Computer. The service did not return an error. This could be an internal Windows error." Windows says it's dependent on the "Remote Procedure Call", but that service is ok. I re-installed a few times already and the result is the same. never encountered anything like this before. any help would be appreciated -- thank you.
Guest Meinolf Weber Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Re: Windows Installer 3.1 - won't Start Hello 360freq, I never saw a MSIInstaller server service on w2000. In my system it is listed under "Windows Installer" service. Which modell from HP is it? An how is the software named, that i can try to reproduce your error. Guest Stubby Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Re: Windows Installer 3.1 - won't Start I had a lot of trouble with the Installer about a year ago. I talked to Microsoft about the problems and they didn't even charge me. The bottom line is that Windows Installer 3.1 was bad and the cure was to download and install the latest version, 3.2 if I remember correctly. You also have to download and run the Windows Installer cleanup program that removes all the bad stuff from your registry that 3.1 put in. There is a very complete description of how the Windows Installer works, interesting to read but not helpful when things don't work. Look around the knowledge base and search microsoft.com . Guest 360freq Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Re: Windows Installer 3.1 - won't Start thanks to both of you for replying. (the HP printer model is the Photosmart C5280) the version I installed is the latest 3.1 v2 redistributable package. maybe I needed to install the "Windows Installer cleanup program" first (which I did not do). I will try that and begin the process over again. "Stubby" wrote: > I had a lot of trouble with the Installer about a year ago.
