Guest Baboon Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 I have a Windows 2003 R2 x64, SP2 server with a Quantum SuperLoader 3 LTO 2 tape library attached. I have been using ntbackup to back up the server to the tape drive for at least a year with no trouble. At some point a couple of weeks ago I ran into a problem where backups have stopped working. When I click on the Removable Storage node in Computer Mgmt. I get this error message: "A device attached to the system is not functioning. The snapin's display may be inconsistent with the Removable Storage Service." When RMS starts, I get the following error in the System log: "RSM cannot manage library Changer0. The database is corrupt." I followed the link to Help and Support and tried to follow the steps to fix the library database, but with negative results - It says to uninstall the library in Device Manager, then delete the device under Libraries in Removable Storage. However, I am still unable to open Removable Storage even after uninstalling *all* devices which had been listed under Libraries (the tape drive and CD ROM drive). I am out of ideas. Does anyone have a possible solution for this? Thanks.
Guest Morgan che Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 RE: Removable Storage Trouble Dear Customer, Thanks for using this newsgroup. Please understand this newsgroup is provided break/fix based and non-urgent technical assistance where the response time within 24 hours excluding weekend can be acceptable. If this issue is urgent and you need the real-time communication, I would like to suggest that you contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS). For more information on available CSS services, please click here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;OfferProPhone#faq607 . Here, I am happy to provide some suggestion as below for your reference. Based on my research, the error message "A device attached to the system is not functioning. The snap in display may be inconsistent with the Removable Storage Service" could occur when you update the firmware for the tape drive. After the drive has been updated, Removable Storage may not be able to obtain the device serial number for the tape drive. In this scenario, Removable Storage uses the device instance name. But because the device has been updated, the device instance name has been changed. Removable Storage then creates a new device and a new drive, but it associates this information with the old device library entry. Therefore, an association is created in that entry between the two drives. This association may prevent the tape drive from being mounted correctly. To resolve this problem, submit a request to Microsoft Online Customer Services to obtain the hotfix. To submit an online request to obtain the hotfix, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=6294451 About List of updates in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, please visit the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914962/en-us As for "RSM cannot manage library Changer0. Service Pack 2 is installed already. Is the above mentioned hotfix included in SP2? If so, I guess it doesn't fix my problem. > > As for "RSM cannot manage library Changer0. Guest Baboon Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 RE: Removable Storage Trouble I learned about the Removable Storage files in System32\NtmsData. I renamed all the files in that folder, which I had to do in safe mode. After that the problem was resolved. I lost my catalogues but at least now I am able to perform backups again.
