Re: Upgrade!

If you have a retail copy, you can go to Microsoft and for a service charge

order the 64-bit version. You will need to do a clean install. If you have

OEM you will have to contact the manufacturer for any exchange program they

have, buy an OEM version from a vendor or buy a Retail version and then

order the 64-bit version from Microsoft (except Ultimate comes with both in

the Retail package)

Re: Upgrade!

You can't upgrade from a 32bit OS to a 64bit OS in the sense that you cannot

do an in-place upgrade. You have to do a fresh installation of 64bit.

If your 32bit Vista came preinstalled on your computer then you can purchase

a Vista Home Premium upgrade edition. It will come with a 32bit dvd and

instructions for ordering a 64bit dvd for $10 shipping and handling. It is

the 64bit dvd you are after.

If you purchased VHP retail (boxed) then you have the instructions in the

box and can order online at

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia/default.mspx. Your

product key will tell MS that you own a retail copy of Vista and you can

then complete the transaction. It took me about a week to get the dvd.

You must make sure that 64bit drivers are available for your computer. You

can download these from the manufacturer's website now and make a cd with

them on it for use once 64bit has been installed.

The process is to boot the computer with the 64bit dvd and choose Custom

Install. You will have to reinstall your apps again.

You can use the Windows Easy Transfer wizard in VHP to save your files and

settings to intemediate media and then after you have installed the 64bit

version you can use WET again to restore your files and settings.
