Cumulative Security Update for IE stops IE7 from showing web pages

Recommended Posts

Hello!

1. Installing Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (944533)

stops IE7 (in Windows Vista x64 Ultimate) from showing web pages.

Uninstalling the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (944533)

resumes IE7 showing web pages.

2. Any version of Agent mail.ru (messenger, e-mail notifier,

http://agent.mail.ru) cannot connect in the Windows Vista x64 Ultimate. I

checked everything the Agent mail.ru support suggested. The support does not

know what to suggest any more.

Dima

Re: Cumulative Security Update for IE stops IE7 from showing web pages

Error message after you install a Windows Internet Explorer 7 update from

Windows Update or from Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed":

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818

If tweaking your third-party firewall's settings don't help, try the

following:

1. Disable your anti-virus application, any real-time protection provided by

an anti-spyware application (except for Windows Defender; includes Spybot

Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS guard.exe, etc.), disable any

third-party firewall AND enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,

browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus

application has been re-enabled! If you're running ZA Free firewall, you

may need to uninstall it instead of disabling it.

2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB944533)"

via Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top right)

and reboot.

3. Re-do #1 above.

4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical Updates

offered. If "Root Certificates" update is listed in the Optional Updates

category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of IE7's

additional security.

5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if

applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable your third-party

firewall.

Re: Cumulative Security Update for IE stops IE7 from showing web p

My reply only addressed your first question, Dima.

No, I believe you'll find that the update is already installed but that one

or more of your security applications blocked some or all of the changes the

update tried to make, hence the "Page cannot be displayed" error. You'll

need to do "all this" to correct that problem. If it means

uninstalling/reinstalling the update (KB944533) in the proper environment

(#1 in my previous reply), so be it.

What anti-virus application or "internet security" suite is installed on the

machine? What third-party firewall might you be using (e.g., Zone Alarm;

Comodo; Norton)?

RE: Cumulative Security Update for IE stops IE7 from showing web pages

Hi Dima,

What security software are you using? It sounds as though the firewall is

blocking the connection. You need to check the settings in your firewall

configuration page. Check that 'iexplore.exe' and 'WinMail.exe' are set to

'Always Allow' instead of 'Auto' (or the equivalent, depending on your

firewall).

How is the

http://www.projecthoneypot.org/bsh_X19tb2RlPWdsb2JhbCZ1YWc9TWFpbC5SdSUyRjEuMA

connected to the "Agent mail.ru" application (http://agent.mail.ru)?

It's not my volition, it's MS mixed up because of the prejudice as usual!

Thanks Dwarf for replying!

I'm not using a security software. Norton Internet security is deactivated

by deleting Norton Internet security startup items from registry and changing

Norton Internet security services to manual to prevent unnecessary system

load. I check suspicious items manualy.

The Windows Vista Firewall is turned off. I'm not using any other firewall.

Re: Cumulative Security Update for IE stops IE7 from showing web p

Norton should have been uninstalled and their cleaner tool run, then you

have a 50% chance that it is actually off & gone.

I have sometimes found that by removing the NIC (actually all network

connection devices) from device manager and allowing it/them to reinstall,

then redetecting the network sometimes does the trick when playing with

firewall & security software settings does nothing.

Norton applications are notorious for not uninstalling cleanly. These

leftovers may be responsible for your problems. Run the appropriate version

of the Norton Removal tool ASAP:

It is /extremely/ foolish not to have a reliable, fully-updated anti-virus

application installed, Dima, especially living where you do. It is equally

foolish to be running without a firewall. With the machine running in such

an environment, I am not willing to assist you further.

RE: Cumulative Security Update for IE stops IE7 from showing web pages

Hi Dima,

This is not a new problem. It has happened on several ocassions previously,

most notoriously with KB937143 which was another cumulative security update

for IE7. The problem stems from the fact that each of these updates actually

includes a new version of the main executable, iexplore.exe (and that of the

equivalent Windows Mail update a new version of WinMail.exe), and, depending

upon whether your security software has updated itself so that it recognises

these new verions prior to them being installed, you may or may not have to

grant them access permission manually yourself. Running Vista without any

security software is not recommended, and it certainly isn't wise to run it

without a firewall. Your system, as it stands, is extremely susceptible to

varying forms of malware attacks. At the very least, I recommend that you

activate the Windows firewall and check its settings as per my previous post.

By its very nature, security software needs to integrate tightly with the

operating system and, as such, can be difficult to fully disable - even when

you check and disable everything that you can find to do with your security

software there can be sufficient remnants of it still active and this can

cause problems. Norton and McAfee are, despite what they say, still not fully

compatible with Vista and consume a lot of resources. Your best bet would be

to remove Norton/Symantec completely using the removal tool found on their

website and then install a more compatible product such as Kaspersky. Once

you have done that, then you should be able to install this update. If not,

please refer to my post 'Activating the built-in main Administrator Account'

in the newsgroup 'Windows Vista Administration Accounts and Passwords',

(dated 10/12/2007), to activate the main Administrator account and install

the update from that account. Please remember to follow the instructions and

deactivate this account once you have finished using it. If this doesn't

work, then you may need to reinstall Vista as failure to install a critical

or important update can lead to problems in the future especially if some

future updates depend on a previous update being correctly installed and

working. If this is an upgrade version of Vista, then you can follow the

instructions in my post 'Clean Install Windows Vista Using Upgrade Media' in

the newsgroup 'Windows Vista Installation and Setup', (dated 9/21/2007).
