copy large file to USB drive hangs

When I copy large files to my USB drive, it hangs. I've done some

checking and found there is a problem with Win2k that is fixed in

SP2. But I'm already using SP4. Any idea what could be wrong ?

I don't think it's a hardware issue. I've use the drive on a XP

machine and I can copy large files.

Thanks for your advice.

Petrform a complete CHDSK on the drive.

I've done chkdsk /f /v /r /x. No errors. I have the same problem

with another external USB HDD. I don't think it's a problem with the

hardware. Something is wrong with my Windows 2k.... any advice ?

Thanks.

Try doing it from a Command Prompt and report

what happens:

copy "d:\My Files\Some File.doc" F:\{Enter}

Perhaps then there is a problem with either the USB drivers or the chip-set itself.

Is there a common file size that causes the problem? What is the format

of the USB drive (FAT32, NTFS?) USB1 or USB2? How are you copying

(Explorer, command prompt, other program?)

How big a file? How is the USB drive formatted?

There is a file size limitation of somewhere around 2G (I think) for FAT32.

After some time, the USB HDD light will go RED in colour and my

computer will hang. I have to unplug the HDD. There will be an error

thrown about not able to save all the data....etc

Re: copy large file to USB drive hangs

1. It's NTFS

2. USB 2.0

3. I've tried all methods: dos prompt, explorer, Total commander.

Allway Sync, xxcopy, ycopy.... hang

4. I've also tried to use NERO Backup. But NERO breaks the file up

after certain size.

5. My files are > 1GB in size. Also happen for < 1GB.

6. I did some research and found some info on the Windows function,

CopyFileEX and CopyFile. I thought these utilities are all using this

function. So I thought I can try using a Unix port of CP command to

copy. Hey it's worked... but it does not eliminate the problem. I

did once encounter a hang (HDD red light) but I manage to copy many

files over. I'm just thinking that the Unix CP is using read to

buffer and write from buffer... but it still hangs, so I don't have a

conclusion at the moment.

Examine the USB setup in Device Manager.

It would be based upon the chip-set. For example, if it is an Intel chip-set then you can

get the software from Intel.

What brand/model external drive or enclosure (if you put a normal drive

in a case)? What does a RED light mean?

Should have also added: Is the drive powered by the USB port, or does it

have it's own power supply?

Re: copy large file to USB drive hangs

I have 3 external USB HDD. 2 made in China (no name). 1 made in

Korea (Sarotech). All experience the same problem.

No activity. Continous green light.

Activity, red/green light.

Seldome get continuous red light in normal operation. But that's what

I'm getting now when the PC hangs.

Re: copy large file to USB drive hangs

The Korean one is 3.5 inch and requires external power supply. The

other 2 China made ones are 2.5 inch and draws power from the USB but

it has a Y cable, meaning it plugs into 2 USB: one for signal +

power, the other for power only.

I downloaded the chipset software and installed it. Then I went to

Rebooted. Still hang. I don't know if I've done the driver update

correctly.

If it was done corerectly then there would be no yellow "!" or "?" [ exclamation or

question ] marks in Device Manager.

If the copy process is still problematic after that, then it isn't a driver issue.

Well I regularly backup my files (250MB to 500MB) to a USB flashdrive

with SP4 and have never encountered a problem, so your problem has

nothing to do with Win2k. Sound like a driver issue. When you look at

Device Manager under "Universal Serial Bus controllers", are there any

red or yellow warning markers? Is "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host

Controller" (USB2 installed) shown?

Finally have a look at this website which should provide a solution.
