Remove Xp from dual boot with vista

Have XP/SP2 installed on one Hard drive and Vista Home Premium (32bit)

installed on another separate HD, in a dual boot situation. Would like to

format and remove XP from the drive it is on and only have Vista as my OS.

Using Computer Management (while booted in Vista) to try and format the

drive that XP is installed on but get a screen that advises that the drive

cannot be formatted.

How can XP be formatted and that OS be removed so I can use that drive as

just a slave drive and have the Vista HD and vista as my only OS ?? Both HD's

are independant SATA drives (no RAID configuration) and both OS's are

"retail" not OEM.

Thank a bunch

Redwagon.

Is XP on C:\ and Vista on D:\ and is C:\ the boot drive? If so, that's why

Visat won't let you format it from within Vista - how then could you boot if

the drive was formatted?

Could you not boot into Vista and delete all the folders relating to XP and

edit boot.ini to eliminate any reference to XP?

First, if you just remove XP Vista probably won't boot because its boot

files are in the root of the XP drive. Download VistaBoot Pro 3.3 and use

it to copy the Vista boot files to all drives. Then you can boot with an XP

or Vista disc and delete the XP partition. Create a new one format then

reboot Vista.

Re: Remove Xp from dual boot with vista

Thanks for the replies. First, Not sure Jerry how to change the boot.ini. And

Colin, I have each operating system on separate drives, so there is no

"Partition" to do any thing with unless you are speaking of either of the

separate drives that are partitioned for the full capacity. Both are 320GB

BTW.

I tried one suggestion from the internet by removing the XP drive and

booting from the Vista DVD original OS disk. Then I ran the "Repair Your

Computer" option--Next, and then chose the "Command Prompt" option. Once in

the DOS prompt, I entered a. bootrecd /fixmbr

b. bootrec /fixboot

c. bootrec /fixrebuildbcd. After that I exited out of the DOS prompt and

left the Vista OS disk in the drive. Again I selected "Startup Repair". Then

I received a message that advised that this "Might" have cured the problem.

Well, that did not.

Back to square one where I started with a dual boot situation and XP and

Vista still running. Just seems like there should be an easier way to get rid

of the XP side of the dual boot and just end up with the Dive that Vista's on

and working properly.

Thanks for the suggestions however.

First run Disk Management, and set the primary partition on the Vista

disk drive to active.

Then remove the Windows XP drive, and follow steps 2 through 15 at
